We have used the same grooming shop for several years, and always been very pleased. Until today. I took Piper (westie) in to be groomed today - they told me her usual groomer was no longer there when I made the appt, but assured me that the new girl was great with terriers. Ok, no problem. I have always had her cut in a traditional westie cut and she looks beautiful A little while later I get a call from the groomer to tell me that Piper has some mats in her skirt and she may need to “bring it up a little” - I knew she had some minor matting, due to a week being boarded followed by a going home bath at the kennel that must have made it worse. I assumed the groomer would take care of the mats so I didn’t worry about it. I told the groomer that I didn’t mind if she had to shorten her skirt a bit, but I did not want her to lose her skirt. I picked her up today and she was clipped all the way to her belly - and her face was clipped like a Scottie. Poor pup, I think she’s embarrassed So, any suggestions for magic hair supplements for my sweet girl?!

Aww, poor pup! They really do get embarrassed don’t they? I took my (puppy cut) poodle to the vet to get her teeth cleaned and she came back with the whole top of her muzzle shaved down and a long weird looking misshapen beard under her chin. The poor thing looks like she got into a fight with a weed whacker and lost. Sad.

It is a bummer but in a few weeks it will be grown out. Unless the dog was injured I wouldn't worry too much about it.

She’s completely fine, no nicks or cuts, just a bad haircut! I know I’ve been in that boat myself in the past!
The owner of the shop was very apologetic and will be grooming Piper and Wally herself in the future. She specializes in terriers, so she was appalled when she saw Piper. Wally is a cairn terrier who gets hand stripped (very few people around here offer hand stripping) and the next few visits for Piper will be about getting her skirt to grow in and her face reshaped.

I have a Westie too! I would put a cute dog T-shirt on Piper when she goes out in public. My vet recommends Omega-3s and oatmeal baths to soothe Lexi's skin during allergy season. I'm not sure if they'll help for magic hair growth.

I bet she's still pretty adorable. I'd love to see a picture.

Sounds like a good resolution, the owner will be grooming her herself in the future.

Mine was once ‘shaved’ until he looked like a Dalmatian and he acted embarrassed for 2 weeks OP I hope your pups hair grows back quickly

Our groomer was almost in tears once when she went to shave Sadie the schnauzer, not realizing someone had borrowed her Clippers and changed the blade from a 7 to a 10! Luckily it was summer, so she wasn't freezing. It does grow out, so unfortunately it's a waiting game.
I'm glad they responded well, and didn't try to fob you off.

Yeah, same thing happened to us once. McFly came out with his nose all cut short, not the usual "doodle" cut. They were very apologetic and it's never happened again. They really don't look like themselves when this happens, do they?

Awe, your poor pup. Sometimes with the matting, they don’t have a choice. We have had that happen to our dog a few times. I get him groomed every 6 to 8 weeks. He has a summer cut and a winter cut. I like his face and tail to be fuller; but sometimes he looks scalped.

Thanks for understanding! I know it’s just hair, but she really doesn’t look like herself In the mean time she’s getting omega 3 and omega 6 treats, and our vet (Piper had pre-anesthesia blood work done on Monday - she’s getting her teeth cleaned Friday) recommended a spoonful of all-natural canned salmon everyday.

What brand are the treats and where did you buy them? I would love to get some for my maltese.

I’ve had that happen a couple of times. The last was with a groomer, husband and wife, that I really like. They are so calm and while my dog isn’t thrilled to be there, he doesn’t freak out or cry like at a previous place. And the mistake was a miscommunication really. I had used them for about a year and was very happy. Then I took him in once right before he was to get his teeth cleaned so I asked her to do his muzzle short to make it easier on the doggie dentist. The next time I took him in, they did the same thing and I hadn’t asked them to. Apparently she wrote it on his card and assumed that I wanted it that way from then on. I didn’t. It did grow out soon enough, but it was really short and he just didn’t look like my little guy. I didn’t take him with me as much until it grew out because I really hated how it looked.
Another time, the groomer accidentally forgot to put the comb on the clipper when changing comb sizes from legs to back and made a 2-inch long bald spot right in the middle of his back. It looked horrible! I was so angry and upset. I was also that groomer. Oops.
