I'll post a photo as a reply.
I've tried to read up on the subway info, they are designated as letters.
Are busses designated as numbers?
It doesn't really say if I'm supposed to take a subway or a bus-just walk, "transit", then walk again.
The first three choices are letters but the last choice is a number.
Sorry for the dumb question...

The little icon in your photo is a train. And yes, the subway routes/lines have a letter or a number and a color. So for example, the first suggestion is to walk to the station, take the E train and then walk from the station to your destination.

Trains can be numbers or letters and the icon in your photo is for a train.
There is an app called Transit that is available for NYC and it is virtually foolproof. I find it much more user friendly than google maps. It tracks the trains in real time so you know you have xxx minutes to walk to the station. It will also update to the next fastest option if you miss the train you're trying to catch.

Love the transit app!
I remember a You Tube video about using NYC subways, it was super helpful in understanding Uptown v Downtown lines. We have zero public transport in my community so it was all new to me.
