We noticed his right eye wouldn't dilate and he has some bald spots on his paws. We took him in Tuesday and the vet said he has high blood pressure and is blind in his right eye. His bloodwork results should be in today so we'll know what are plan of action is. I never knew cats could have high blood pressure. This cat is seriously laid back, he is a big boy but the vet said his weight is fine. I'm so bummed for Dexter, he's only 6.

Wow! I didn't know that either. I thought cats could only GIVE other people high blood pressure.

Awww, that stinks. Did the high blood pressure affect his vision? I hope it's not too hard to control.

wow- like the others, I didn't even think that was possible! I hope you can get it under control and that the vision in his other eye is saved.
(eta: if his weight is fine, then does the vet have any idea what the cause might be? or is it just something that happens, sometimes?)

Oh so sorry to hear this. I had no idea either that cats could have high BP.

I'm sorry -- he's really pretty.
I watched my vet take a blood pressure reading on my cat years ago. It was really funny to watch. She shaved a ring of fur off his tail, put on a mini cuff made specifically for cat tails, and pumped it up. The cat didn't like it much when it was squeezing his tail. His BP turned out to be fine -- he had a heart valve issue that caused an early death at 12. His sister lived to 18.

The vet's waiting for the test results to see if there's an underlying cause for the high blood pressure.

Poor kitty! Hope it can be stabilised easily.
My kitty has been on steroids this week, having been diagnosed with emphysema! I hadn’t realised cats could get that. He’s 5.

My dh just heard from the vet. He has a hyperactive thyroid which is what caused the high blood pressure. He's got 2 meds prescribed, one for the thyroid and the other for his blood pressure.

I just want to apologize for giving a flip response earlier. I didn’t read your OP very attentively and I missed that the HBP had caused serious medical problems for Dexter. I’m glad your vet has found the cause of his problems and he can be treated. He’s such a pretty guy.

I was going to say perhaps hyperthyroid but since he did not look thin, I did not think so. He is very handsome!
My 17 year old cat that looks JUST LIKE YOURS! was diagnosed with hyperthyroid after he lost weight/looked "scruffy" and had a really fast heart rate. I gave him pills for his thyroid (he hated it of course) and then they did updated tests. His thyroid and heart rate were fine but something else was out of whack so we had to discontinue it.
Now he is on prescription food, Hills thyroid food, dry and canned. He can't have any other kind of food-ever. He went from about 8.5 lbs three months ago to 10 pounds now. That's a big difference and he looks and acts much better.
So if your cat gives you a hard time about the pills, you may want to try the prescription food.
Also my cat has an "icky" eye but the vet said his eyelid is turned in. The only way to correct it is with surgery and I'm not putting a 17 year old cat through anesthesia. Vet said he can see fine but it's watery looking and tears.

We go back in about 3 weeks and will have bloodwork checked again to see how things are. So far he hasn't fought us taking the pills but tomorrow might be a different story.
Glad your cat is feeling better.

So glad they were able to find the cause, but I’m sorry he lost his vision. My dog has hypothyroid and is on medicine for it, and she’s doing really well on it. I had no idea cats could have high blood pressure.
