Basically every item I come across has 4 stars. I bought an activity that came with passages and the passage I printed out was FULL OF TYPOS, it did not correspond to what the title of the passage was and the font was tiny and hard to read even for my kids without reading difficulties. Yet every review was over the top and glowing with how wonderful it was, many mentioned how great the passages were.
This is not the first time, I am getting to the point where I just won't buy anymore. I left an accurate review, positive for most but mentioned the passage. If you use TPT, do you leave an honest review?

I don't buy all that much from there, and I don't think I've ever left a review. But, I know what you mean about the ratings - pretty much everything I've ever looked at has four stars, which makes the ratings useless.

I think the issue is they allow you to rate loooong after you have bought the item to earn credits to pay for new products. At that point you no longer remember what it was or the issues with the product. Rate it quickly, get your credits, and then move on.

TpT is aware of this issue and has been trying to come up with ideas to fix it and make the ratings actually accurate. After you rate sometimes they'll let you give a "private" rating with what you really thought. I'd be interested to see that data!
I love Tara West products. She's amazing! Well I once rated an item of hers less than 4 stars, because it wasn't up to her regular standards. Would you believe she posted a giant rebuttal to me?? Which is certainly within her right, but I wonder if other people are afraid to be honest because they'll get berated by the seller.
Additionally, I also sell, and once received a critical review because my product wasn't editable. Well I never said it was editable! She said it was an amazing product, though. Well why dock me in the ratings for something like that. SMH.

I agree that a lot of it has to do with earning credits with each review. So if you want max credits, you’ll quickly go through all your past unreviewed purchases.
OR....you’ll review new purchase too quickly, before you’ve had a chance to thoroughly look at them and use them. I’m guilty of that. Sometimes it can take me awhile before I realize, in hindsight, that the product was a dud.

Honestly I've gotten to where there are only a handful of sellers I'll buy from. There are some putting out excellent, high quality material so find those and stick with them. Since the ratings are basically useless, ask other teachers in your grade level/subject which sellers they like to use.
I've found also that if you message the seller and tell her about the mistakes, they will often fix it and re-publish so you can download a corrected version.

I did not eve realize you can earn credits with reviews! I love the concept of the site, we move quite a bit so I have taught many grade levels (take what I can get ), so where I used to make things myself, 17 years in and having taught PS-8th (but not 4th) it just gets overwhelming. I am in a small private school now and I am the only 5th grade teacher so where I normally had colleagues to collaborate with, I no longer do, so even more of a reason to use the site. May have to go back to doing things myself though, we just get paid so little here that the few $ for an activity is better than hours of my own time.
