When I used to get my hair dyed, it had a fantastic shine. Since stopping using dye, my half white, half brown head of hair has lost its shine. I think it’s in good enough condition - no split ends or anything obvious. My hairdresser says the texture has changed since it has got greyer, so I’m not sure if it’s just that grey hair is never as shiny as naturally coloured or dye-treated hair. Any ideas at what I could use to bring back a bit of lustre to my aging locks?

How is your diet? Are you eating enough good fats and proteins? Taking an Omega 3 supplement or getting enough through food is supposed to help. Biotin, collagen and some other supplements are also supposed to help with hair. I would assume it would help with overall hair health, not just growth.
Using a shine serum or spray, or hair oil product will help.

I use a purple shampoo on my greying hair. It is not as shiny as it once was but the purple helps. I am also aware some people will use manic panic toner or John Frieda gloss clear on their grey hair as well. My grey doesn’t handle heat as well as my brown did and turns dull and yellow so I minimize that.

Shine spray, used sparingly. Hot oil treatments. Smoothing with a hot iron if the texture is wiry.

I use a hair oil which helps as well as biotin. Hope that helps

A hair masque could help. I really like Aveda's Dry Remedy masque. I mostly use it as a conditioner in the shower, but every few weeks out it on wet hair and then wrap it in a fresh from the dryer warm towel to really help it penetrate.
Strait hair reflects more shine, so if your grey hair went "wiry," which is typical, that will make a big impact.

Serum. A good one is Silk Therapy. A little goes a long way. Nickle size amount in your palm, rubs hands together and then apply it starting 4 inches from the root to the ends when hair is damp. If you skip washes you can apply it to the bottom two inches before styling to nourish the ends.

Thanks for all the suggestions.
I have a good and varied diet and my general health is good.
My hair is naturally really curly. I blow dry it smoother with a hot air styler. I am seriously considering the Dyson Airwrap as I like the idea that it might smooth the hair and add a bit more shine without heat damage. I think the texture of the grey is probably the biggest problem.
I’ve just started using a purple shampoo every third or fourth wash and I think it does make a difference in brightening the white but I haven’t noticed it increasong shine.
I’ll check out the products mentioned. I don’t use any serums, treatments or sprays at the moment so it’s good to know where to start.

I think the texture of the grey is probably the biggest problem. I believe grey hair is inherently less shiny unfortunately.

That photo looks exactly like the one I posted of my hair on the going grey thread. I did a bit of a double take there! Thats the purple shampoo I’ve started using - the intense one about once a week. I’ve not tried other products in the range.

Another tip is to keep changing your parting slightly. When you part your hair and brush it, little hairs get broken and that makes it look less smooth and sleek, especially with curly hair like mine.

I have just tried L`OREAL Age Perfect toner and was very impressed with the smooth and shiny effect. Not a great deal of change in the overall colour but it seems to blur the difference between the old colour and the grey.( Brits it`s on special offer in Boots at the moment). Two applications per pack.

I have my hair colored, but towards the time I need another appt I notice that my hair feels dryer and less shiny. I started religiously using the products my stylist uses on my hair and I find it works well. I think a lot of it is in the product you use when you blow dry your hair. I have straight here so take my suggestions for what they are worth...but here are the products I use when blow drying and they leave my hair looking and feeling great. Paul Mitchell Super Skinny Serum and Aquage Silkening Oil Treatment

Do you have hard water? Our hard water absolutely kills my hair. My hairdresser does a treatment on it every time I go and it changes the texture of my hair immediately.

You can go to a salon or beauty supply store and get gloss treatment that is basically that wonderful shine from hair color without the color. It's just clear.

Jockscrap 🤣💦 we could be twins 👯 I almost exclusively use the purple range. Once in a while I just wash it with baby shampoo and no conditioner

Wow, just wanted to say that your gray hair is so beautiful, PascoePea and Jockscrap! I think I got my father's gray hair gene--he's 83 and still not all the way gray. My hair is never going to look like yours.
