Here's the background and the story:
Dd's arm was basically twisted into dog sitting this week. She normally only sits for small and medium sized dogs, this is a larger dog that her roommate has taken care in the past. Her roommate is out of town and had asked dd to sit for this dog this week. Dd had originally said no because I was visiting and this is a big dog. The owner had put the dog into a kennel. The dog did not behave at the kennel and was then placed into a small 5x8 space (a crate I am guessing) and only let out once a day. DD felt bad when she heard this and agreed to take the dog for a few days, against her better judgement. I was with her the last few days and was able to help her with him. He just is not well trained in general. Knows very few commands (just sit) but is house trained.
All was relatively OK while I was there. He did scratch her up when jumping on her when we took him for a walk. He's big enough to knock her over. He goes nuts if he sees the leash when you walk him, jumps up and tries to bite it like a toy. Makes it difficult, but it can be done. She walked him 3x yesterday. The last time was late at night, when she got home. Woke up this morning and he seemed angry with her. Didn't growl but kept trying to jump on her (might have been trying to play?). Had plenty of food and water out. She went back into her room for a few moments after trying to get him to calm down and he tore up the corner of a chair that belongs to her roommate. Owner says he has not done that sort of thing in years.
She could not get him to go for a walk this morning at all. She tried to move the furniture in question and the matching ottoman into her roommate's room, but couldn't get it into the door and then the dog thought she was playing and tried to bite her (as in put his mouth on her arm but did not actually bite).
She has been texting with the owner who suggested putting him in the bathroom or out on the patio. Couldn't put him in her bathroom because it's open to her bedroom and she's worried about what he would damage next. She got him onto the patio and went to work. Dd is upset. She's never had issues with a dog like this before.
The kicker is that the owner originally said he would be back on Wednesday, today at the latest. The owner is out of town and where ever he is, there are storms and delayed flights and now there is no return set.
Ideas and suggestions?
We both think this dog needs more exercise than a walk. She lives in an apartment and there's no place for him to get off leash and just run around. She did run with him on one or two walks yesterday. She also think he misses his owner because he got rambunctious like this at the end of his stay the last time the roommate had him for a full week. She does not have a car and cannot take him to a dog park.
She's tried to find a male friend to come walk him, but didn't have any luck yet today. Her friend who is a dog whisperer type already has another dog sitting gig this week (ironically, most people think of dd as a dog whisperer as well!) She's ready to ask the owner to try to find another sitter to come pick him up from her. She feels bad, has tried her best and just wants to be done. Dd is usually very good with dogs. Other owners have sung her praises for her care.
She asked me to post and see if the refuPeas had any ideas for her in general. She feels she is out of her league with a dog this size!
