I spent a good part of last evening looking at all the candy theft videos compiled on Reddit. One woman took her time choosing which decorations to steal, like, "Hmm....this one's cute, that one I'll pass on...", then, "PLINK", shifty-eyed check to see if anyone is looking, and "SCOOT"!
I just don't get it...

I would never be so brave as to leave our whole bowl of full size candy bars out unattended, especially since the first kids to come around are usually middle schoolers who would be more inclined to take the whole bowl (little kids seem to be a lot more honest IMO). But I have to say that I was really loving our cameras on Halloween! The extra minute of advance notice on my phone letting me know someone was coming up the driveway allowed me time to jump the baby gate and meet the kids at the door vs. listening to my crazy dog bark his head off for five minutes every time there was a knock on the door.

You know, I wouldn't do that in the first place, but so many people have security cameras nowadays that I don't get why that doesn't cross people's minds that there is a good chance that they will be on video and have that video splashed around on the internet.

I haven’t seen any recordings of decorations being stolen but the most outrageous candy theft I saw was where a small child was apparently taking too long to put handful after handful of candy in his bag (from an unattended candy bowl on the porch) and the adult with the child finally walked up, picked up the bowl and dumped the remaining candy from the bowl into the child’s bag! WOW...

A friend of mine used to put a bowl on his porch with only a couple of full-size candy bars in it. He left a note that said “Happy Halloween! Take only one , please!” Of course, the first few TOTers who got there just thought someone else had taken all the candy.
He was single and did not want to be bothered with TOT, but he also didn’t want pranked. So he put out his sham treats and went to a bar for the evening!

We have had a lot of decoration theft in my neighborhood this year. Someone stole my neighbor's amazing Burt Reynolds carved pumpkin. Another one of my neighbor's had her skeleton family (mom, dad, and two dogs) stolen, and another neighbor's catrina skeleton that she hand-painted was stolen. All of them were caught on camera, but they are not from the neighborhood, so there's nothing that can be done. People suck.

I always did a huge Griswold style Hallloween and several years back someone(s) decided to take parts and spread it across the neighborhood or simply knock it down. I was so discouraged that i have not pulled any of it out of the shed. Mean people suck the joy out of life sometimes and ruin it for others.

Our neighborhood website was lit up with lots of posts of candy stolen (even the bowls/baskets) and vandalism. I feel pretty discouraged by what I have read. Why is it so hard for people to make good choices??

That's just so rotten. What kind of human being does that? I'm not sure if she deserves jail or public shaming or both? To make matters worse, she has a young little boy( I assume her son) with her and he's watching her steal it. What on earth? Way to raise a felon! BTW- flopsykitty I think you need to hand me those furry, cuddly pussycats. They look so lovable.

It's been hit or miss in my neighborhood over the years. I would leave a whole box of full size candy bars out and some years there will be some left and others the whole box is gone. What are you gonna do if there is nobody that can stay home to pass out candy? We have had our carved pumpkins taken and smashed in the road. That makes me mad because its a mess to clean.
My mom left her big cauldron of candy out one year and came home to find all the candy and the cauldron gone. She was so mad someone would take the cauldron. That was the first and last time she left a bucket out.
It's sad when its the parents encouraging their kids or they themselves are the ones stealing. I expect if I leave a box of candy out that the first kid is gonna take it. I also feel like I cant take my kids trick or treating and not leave candy out myself.

We caught 2 teenagers on camera smashing one of our carved pumpkins. It's funny the literally canvased the area looking for pumpkins, left and came back 20 minutes later and stomped on it. I'm so angry. My boys worked so hard carving their pumpkins just to have some punks come up and step on them. 8:30 at night too, not even real late, we were only home for like 20 minutes before it happened. Not sure how we didn't see it on the camera at the time, but we were probably busy getting everything organized.

Dd saw a kid take her neighbor’s full bowl of candy. Her neighbor had just gone in the house for something. Then he came to dd’s Porch and sil said no way are you getting any candy from us. Sil then went to all the neighbors in their block and ratted him out so no one else gave him candy in that block.
30 minutes later he came back thinking maybe no one would recognize him. Sil wasn’t having it. Told him to go home.
I cannot believe people would steal decorations. Don’t people realize cameras are everywhere?

There were hardly any toters in our neighborhood at all. We went out for a walk to see the little kids, walked about a mile or so altogether, and saw a total of about 5 kids. So disappointing.

I live on a super busy street in Chicago and we were going to a friend’s house this year for Halloween. So I put out a large tupperware container with half chocolate, half fruity candy (and good stuff too, not the crappy candy) and put a sign up. When I came home it was only half gone! I was shocked. People actually took only one or two pieces.
