If you are lactose intolerance, what specific foods do you avoid? Or what diary can you get away with eating without an issue?
Have you ever found your tolerance for certain foods have gotten better over time? I find that I've become more tolerant of certain diary...which i'm finding great, but surprising.

My daughter avoids anything with milk, cream or cheese. She has found that lactaid pills help her. She also found she can tolerate vegan cheese and lactaid makes a variety of milk, yogurt and ice cream she can enjoy.
Good luck with this.

My oldest really suffers from milk or ice cream. She does ok with most cheese and yogurt. Lactaid pills never did much for her.

My kids are all lactose intolerant. They use lactaid pills (not the chewables-those made 2 of my 3 kids sick) and take 2 if they're having ice cream or pudding or something with a lot of fresh milk and 1 if they're eating yogurt or cheese.

I'm diagnosed with LI, but I suspect it's actually the protein in milk, not the lactose. I can't eat any dairy but butter. Even licking my finger after handling dairy will set off a reaction, and Lactaid pills do nothing for me. But I can use A2 milk and have had good success with that. I just made mashed potatoes last night with it and had no adverse reaction. I'm told to keep butter in my diet daily or I may lose the ability to eat that as well.
It sucks. And vegan cheese is the devil's work.

Ice cream and whipped cream are the absolute worst for me, but I can handle yogurt fine. When in doubt, I take Lactaid, which works for me. I recently discovered that a store generic brand of pills does NOT work for me. Sadly, they make me throw up every time. Bleah. Good thing I don't really care for dairy in the first place.

DH can't have dairy. He can eat pizza if he pulls the cheese off and for some reason, meals made with cream soup (mushroom, chicken, celery) are fine. Otherwise, he'll avoid anything remotely creamy (including too much chocolate) or cheesy unless it's made with nondairy milk.

Ds & I are both intolerant. I avoid cream & butter for the most part. I use LactAid milk, liquid coffee-mate & margarine.
I take the LactAid tablets for cheese. I have no issues with yogurt or goat cheese.

Are you sure it’s lactose and not casin? My dd thought she was lactose intolerant for years and took Lactaid. It helped a bit. But, once she had an allergy test and found out it was casin, she went dairy free (which is hard) and feels so much better.

I can't drink milk or eat ice cream, but do okay with most yogurts and cheeses. I have to take 2 Lactaid or Walmart brand lactaid chewables at a time, other brands and dosages don't really work for me.

Lifelong lactose intolerant person here. Here's the deal. Your body actually still makes the lactase enzyme that breaks down lactose. How much it makes varies, but it's still too low to eat lactose containing foods. If you can manage to completely avoid lactose, for a period of time and allow the enzyme levels to build up again, you can tolerate small amounts and maybe even an entire serving... your mileage will vary with that. Lactose intolerance actually worsens with age. It's a natural consequence of aging and many do not realize that is what is making them gassier, etc. But, if you've been avoiding lactose, it may seem like it's improved but that's only very temporary. We only use almond milk in our house. I do eat some ice cream but usually it's best tolerated if I take some enzyme (Lactaid is the most popular but I buy another brand as well). Many cheeses are actually very low in lactose or lactose free. You need to read the labels. Cheddar cheese has very low to minimal amounts naturally but it is also possible to buy lactose free cheddar. We sometimes buy nut based cheeses which aren't really cheese at all. I know very quickly if I've overdone it with lactose. Same for fructose but that's another post. It's SOOO much easier to deal with this today than it was when I was growing up. It was difficult to find anything other than soy milk for a replacement for milk.

I have recently developed this. The lactaid pills work for me but give me the worst heartburn that I just don't bother.
I can do hard cheeses and yogurt. Straight milk is a no go. Hagen dass ice cream doesn't seem to bother me as bad. But soft serve or a cheaper ice cream no way. Pretty much a 30 min reaction time

Ds uses Lactaid milk and Lactaid pills (the costco brand). He does find that if he eats a lot of dairy, he can still have issues, so he shoots for moderation (or more of the pills). He swears I tried to kill him with the macaroni and cheese I made for Christmas dinner last year. We all had issues (dh and I arent as bad off as ds)

Yogurt has very little lactose in it, which is why so many lactose intolerant people can eat it.

I finally realized that my severe stomach cramps were related to dairy consumption. I bought Lactaid milk and still had problems. I can have small amounts of cream in my coffee without a problem. I blew it today by having a small cup of clam chowder. My goodness how stupid of me. My stomach is rebelling and it really hurts.
I do notice that I can have Borden half/half for my creamer in the morning but don't do well with Horizon organic half/half. Go figure.
I think for me, it's the protein in the milk and not the lactose intolerance. So, I tend to avoid almost all dairy. I still eat Pizza once in a while.
Maybe I will lose weight since I won't eat ice cream anymore and I love ice cream.

Pretty much zero problems with: - Hard cheeses (like cheddar, parmesan) - Mozzarella - Goat cheese
Minimal problems unless I eat a ton of: - Cottage cheese - Lactaid milk - Frozen yogurt - Some yogurt
Lots of problems with: - Ice cream - Chobani yogurt
Guaranteed running to the bathroom with: - Plain milk - American cheese
Fun fact: My brother was seriously lactose intolerant as a kid but grew out of it. I drank crap tons of milk when I was a kid, then stopped. And now I'm lactose intolerant.

Dd is lactose intollerant and can not have any hard cheese or yogurt. Everything has to be LF.
She also has issues with apples and pears (their fructose is like lactose to her body)

She has a small scoop of Dryers LF ice cream. She tollerates that brand better over Lactaid ice cream ?

I can have anything but a large glass of milk. I can do a small amount of milk. Whipped cream or a Starbucks with regular milk, not soy and i’ll Be running to the bathroom in minutes.

I use lactaid milk and ice cream; The chewable pills work wonders for me. Cheeses mostly are fine except American cheese that does not have an enzyme added to it. Most cheeses have enzymes added to them to make them into cheese and this heps to break down the lactose enzyme. My sister is not LI but allergic to milk so the pills don't work for her. I have found that there are a variety of reasons milk can make one sick and it is not always lactose.
It took a few years for me to become diligent about avoiding lactose. It has to become a habit, and habits take practice.

It’s regular milk, just from cows that do not produce the normal proteins. I’m so hoping that they will make cheese with it. Even goat cheese causes a reaction for me.

I just avoid dairy products alltogether. When 75% of the worlds population can’t handle dairy, maybe instead of making pills for it we should realise that we’re not supposed to comsume dairy. 😉

My biggest trigger is ice cream. If I eat it directly following a meal, I don’t have a problem. But if day we eat dinner at 6:30, and I want ice cream at 9, I’m going to pay for it. Depending on the type of ice cream, I will either get very bloated and bubbly or just general tummy ache.
Ive noticed similar issues with milk, the more fat the worse it is. I have okay luck with 2% if I stick to a glass with dinner.
And once there was too much queso dip, cheesy sauce on a burrito and more queso.
The discomfort lasts for a couple hours, but so far stays contained to my tummy. Sometimes I have to test it to find my boundaries, and I make sure that’s at home.

I would consider mine as a strong sensitivity.
I use lactaid milk always and almond creamer for my coffee.
I can have a little bit of cream in my coffee but if it is hot outside, I will surely reactive to it (stomach cramps and bathroom issues instantly) This past summer I had a lot of issues.
No on ice cream 99% of the time.
Frosting that has dairy and is very sugary will give me stomach cramps
Hot cheese or warm cream cheese or cream sauce causes me issues.
I would say it is unpredictable and may also have to do with how well my anxiety is under control.
Shredded cheese is usually not an issue same with feta and goat cheese.

The pills are a godsend for us because there is no way in hell I'm giving up cheese. Ever.
