I'm an RN at a VA primary care clinic and am covering for someone on another team which in and of itself is no big deal. Until this afternoon.
I received a message from a patient with a picture of something that he found in his poop. He was very surprised and upset when I said he didn't need to bring it in for evaluation, that I was pretty sure I knew what it was. It was the outer coating of one of the capsules he takes as part of his daily medication regime.
In 25 years of nursing, never have I had someone e-mail me a picture of their poop.
Fun times.

Oh dear, I'm kind of laughing and feeling disgusted at the same time.

Well, at least smell-a-vision emails haven't been invented yet. Small upside.

Oh dear. Who inspects their poop close enough to have found that? Oh my word!

Good thing you don't work with GI. I have had to send pics of ds poop to his GI doctor before, bring in samples, etc. Quite fun doing a 72 hour collection and keeping it in the fridge lol

Oh dear. Who inspects their poop close enough to have found that? Oh my word! I have to look at ds poop at least 2x a week for blood, mucus, and to see the color, size, etc. He has pre UC, has rectal bleeding and has short bowel syndrome with ither GI issues. You can tell a lot about someones health by their poop

I must be weird but I don’t think that would bother me. I guess I’m used to generations of kids making me look at their poop for various reasons.

But I was thinking this man was your "general Jo" that didn't have a reason to look.

Another reason I’m glad I work with babies. Everything that comes out of an adult is at least a million times grosser than anything that comes out of a NICU baby.

No. The blowouts ds had in the NICU and PICU were down right nasty. TPN and GoLytle (did I spell it right?) and Cdiff and short bowel syndrome and infections created entire unit clearing grossness haa haa One nurse would put 10 room deoderizers in his room haa haa haaaaa Ah. Good times.

As a fellow nurse I am thinking thank God for modern technology. Otherwise you'd have to take a look into a pickle jar that he'd brought in!

I am so glad that people take pictures with their phones now a days and leave the specimens safely at home!

Picture's worth a 1000 words.... the one time he flushes and then the nurse will ask "exactly what does it look like?"

Nope. For some patients it's necessary to refrigerate samples. It's normally done in a biohazard bag and then bagged, again and kept in the back, all by itself. If anyone stole my phone they'd be completely disgusted. Gi patients have to take photos of stuff that no one wants to see. My selfies are not Kardashian selfies.

Haa, nope! Special container that you dump the poop into (from the toilet poop collection hood) that is then stored in a bio hazard bag in the regular fridge. Mmmm poop scented chicken anyone?! I kid. I kid. Have also stored TPN and special meds too. Ahhh life of a GI mom x2

Gross. Reminds me of DD12 who often feels the intense need to describe an abnormal BM to me, or even asks me to come look at it. No thanks!
Years ago BIL was an xray technician and he said you would never believe what people collected from their bodies and put in a jar, bag, or tupperware to show him. Igh!
