Does anyone have this: www.amazon.com/Charcoal-Companion-CC2031-Hasselback-Slicing/dp/B01LNDXZDQI saw it at Home Depot the other day and thought it looked like a great idea. I see there is also a version without the metal cutting guide hoops. Does anyone have either one of these? Wondering if they are actually helpful. I LOVE hassleback potatoes, but feel like the cutting process is fraught with peril.

I have it. It works pretty good but would be better if the well in the wood base was deeper. You have to be careful not to cut all the way to the base - especially on the ends of the potato.
I got mine from Home Depot.

My kitchen is too small for kitchen gadget that I use only three times a year but if your kitchen is huge why not.

When I make Hasselback potatoes, I lay the potato between two wooden spoons. It will keep you from slicing all the way through the potato. But I only make them once or twice a year. Crash potatoes so much easier to make!

That looks like a unitasker and Alton Brown says the only item in a kitchen that should be a unitasker is a fire extinguisher.
I do the wooden spoon trick as well, and I make them every few weeks.

That would be handy for getting even cuts, but I too don't have room to store something that wouldn't get used much. The few times I've done something like that I just use two wooden spoons.

I have one just like that. It works great IF you are using a good sharp knife 😉 otherwise prepare to curse the darn thing... ask me how I know?! The little spikes on mine don’t do much for holding the potato in place, but it still makes quick work of a tedious job.
