What annoyed me about the Gemini foiling machine is that I would have to pay am additional $16 to buy an adapter plate so that the machine would work with my ORIGINAL Gemini! WTH? For the price of that machine, they should have included plates that would work with both machines. That totally turned me off.

This is how I feel about the Easy Press iron thing. If you’re going to spend $149 on a cheapie plastic iron tool to make t-shirts and whatnot, why not just spend the same amount of money and buy the real deal from Amazon which will work 1000% better? I don’t understand why these companies feel the need to reinvent the wheel when there are already perfectly good tools out there that achieve the same exact purpose, and that actually do the job BETTER? I just don’t get it and I never will.
I never really got into the whole foil it yourself craze. There are plenty of already foiled accents and papers out there on the market that I could just buy if I wanted that stuff. I haven’t yet found a need to make any myself.

There are plenty of already foiled accents and papers out there on the market that I could just buy if I wanted that stuff. I haven’t yet found a need to make any myself. Yes! I wanted an Easy Press SO bad back in April or May. I had heat transfer vinyl since LAST December but was afraid to waste it with an iron. Most people I know said save up and go with a heat press, especially if you want to give or sell them to other people. That it just won't stay on with an iron, hard to get enough pressure and correct temperature. I realized I couldn't get enough pressure with an Easy Press and actually got a 9x12 heat press CHEAPER than the Easy Press.
I was at Hobby Lobby on Friday and saw that they now have a SMALLER Easy Press out. What the heck? It is almost as small as an iron! And the price is still high.
As for foil, I have a laminator and I also use the foil with Siser Adhesive for Foil and use my heat press. I saw the Spellbinders version at Hobby Lobby and NOT impressed. Yes, love the look but not going to bite.

I watched Jennifer McGuire use it but I know I wouldn’t invest in those special dies, and also it looked hard to line up stuff. I’m too klutzy to mess with any hot craft machine but the the results were quite nice. I watched JM's video about the Glimmer machine too, and as usual she made it look fairly easy to use and not so stupid. I noticed that she used it slightly differently to the way Justine demoed it. She used bigger pieces of cardstock to do the foiling and cut them down so she didn't have to worry about getting stuff positioned just right. I would have to do that. She also got the plates positioned on top before she hit the heating timer. But I'm really wary of her making stuff look easy because she is able to get everything - new foils, new plates, no problem. She shows using her normal dies but that's an optional extra for her because she can just get all the new Glimmer plates if she wants to. She did point out a circumstance where laminators don't work so well - adding layers of foil, or sending things through more than once - but that's not something I need to worry about. I still need to try out scor-tape foiling with the supplies I already have. Scor-tape foiling really is so easy! I highly recommend it.

I'm intrigued by this machine.
It reminds me of single-purpose kitchen implements when the job could be done by some other multi-purpose tool. Why would I give up so much money and space for an item that ONLY heats up a metal die to allow foiling???
So, my questions: is this "special" foil or regular? This is a BIG question because if this technique works with "normal" foils I want to try the following... : could we not heat up our metal dies using an iron or heat gun on a silicon mat, and then run them through die-cut machines? Sure, we might have to experiment with how hot/how long, but this can't be rocket science, right?

True, true, true. By the way, you know that Cricut Bright Pad? I bought another brand on Amazon for about $20, and it works great! I use it to trace brush lettering onto the envelopes of special cards that I make. The Cricut pad is almost $100! Now the Cricut site has it on sale for $49.99. I guess people have figured out what a rip-off it is.

The Glimmer Foil and the Gemini foil tool are almost exactly alike, including the magnetic tweezers!

Look, I'm not even going to pretend I wouldn't burn myself badly if I ever were to use this machine. I know myself. I would totally get way too comfortable after the first few careful uses and drop the ball all of a sudden. *backs away from thread*

It is about a foiling machine. I think I'm going to experiment w/cuttlebug plate, my dies, and an iron on low. Will report back. Will also try debossing since I have a debossing mat for my cuttlebug. Did you ever try this? I randomly found a plate at my Hobby Lobby marked down to $4.74. I don't have the machine, and am wondering if I have to? It's not super expensive on Amazon, but still....

I did. I didn't get great results, but I need to get a new iron (mine is about 20 years old and pretty rinky-dink). I've still got it on my list to try again when I get a better (hotter, heavier) one.

My little journal has one too that she shows every so often. Her projects always come out cute but it just seems like a lot a stuff and money for just a tiny bit of impact. I’m in the mode of downsizing though so these things like this are really just so far from what I need.

Jennifer McGuire just posted a video using this machine again. I admit, she gets beautiful results. However, I always wondered if an iron wouldn't do a similar job - I think I have a googling job for myself this evening.

I missed this post the first time around but I don't like the idea of handling hot devices that much. Also, it didn't look like the first item foiled with the spellbinder phrase foiled really well but it was hard to tell since it wasn't fully shown in the video.

It's funny because I can't believe it's been almost 2 years since I posted that - seems like a few months ago. Still not into the machine - and have seen it LOTS on youtube. I'm trying to keep my space fairly clutter free. While I love the look of foiling, I'm always finding youtubes that "hack" foiling w/o heat - because I won't even buy a $20 laminator - just because of the space issues. So I either get along w/glue-based or double-sided tape-based foiling, or I buy stuff pre-foiled. But, if others like the idea of this machine, that's great too.

I have the Couture Creations one and I like it. I bought it because I can foil with the thin dies and the embossing folders I already have. I also can foil chipboard pieces.

And at the same time, March, which was a few months ago, feels like 2 years ago (for me anyway). Ha!! I agree about all the tools and machinery. I used to buy into "needing it all" but I have become more selective about what I am willing to make space for.

I’m trying to remember a video I saw the other day - she was using foil over re-melted embossing powder. She did some with stamps, just heat embossed them with clear powder and then blasted them again, pressed the foil on and maybe blasted the heat gun a wee bit more. The results were imperfect but quite lovely (she did a detailed butterfly I think). And I think she did some swiping with versamark and maybe some ink through a stencil...?
I’m still not keen to buy any extra devices and especially not hot ones! Can’t believe how long ago we were talking about this.

Anyone have any great ideas as to how you could use the plate without the machine? I love the design, just would rather not have another machine around if I can help it.
