If someone said to you they are "Dreaming of the Big House," what would you take that to mean? This is today's theme for spirit week leading up to a playoff game against our biggest rival. When I dropped DD off this morning, I didn't see any kids dressed up, but it was cold and raining, so clothing wasn't obvious.
We're not in Michigan...though I recognize that they do call their stadium the Big House. The last playoff game will be played at a stadium called The Rock, so Dreaming of The Rock would make complete sense. We have a "Big House" at the local Episcopal Camp, but that certainly isn't the meaning either. Maybe the football team is dreaming of all the riches this game will bring them (?). Which leaves me with prison, which was my first thought, or a large home with servants quarters.
Please tell me that I am missing a pop culture reference. What would Dreaming of the Big House make you think of?

I have no clue but can you call the school and ask?

I would ask. That's weird. Is your daughter high school aged? What did she say it meant?

I taught history and the Big House was what people called the plantation home. I know that it doesn't have to mean that, but that was my point of reference.

I was really hoping someone else had better thoughts than me. I think prison is the most likely theme, but that isn't really the positive message I want to be sending our teens.

She has no idea....but she isn't the best reference for stuff like this! It has to be a really fun theme to catch her attention. It feels like this is the 75th dress up week this year. It has gotten a little old.

I completely agree with you and I'd probably nonchalantly call the school and inquire about it. If it is what you think, I would want to address it further. That is not appropriate. But who knows, maybe it is something else entirely? You won't know until you call! LOL Keep us updated.

I too thought prison first, then I thought one of the big 10 colleges, namely University of Michigan (I am in MI).

I work with a cheerleader dad, so I asked him. He said it was meant to infer the big stadium where the last playoff game will be played, and they didn't think it through since they had limited time to come up with the themes for the week (didn't want to be too hopeful about winning the first round of playoffs). Pajamas would apparently be the correct attire if the kids are dressing up for the "Dreaming" part of the phrase.

I would think it's about their stadium. We were the wolves so we would/could be dreaming of the big den (wolf den).
But I'm a positive intent person. I'm sure they just didn't think this through well. We've had some really odd and hard to work with fair themes when we were in 4-H. I think our hardest was the year the theme was Experience Animal Magnetism

if 'dreaming' is the operative part of it (for the pajamas), better wording would have been something like 'dreaming about a huge victory' or 'dreaming of success' or something similar. 'Big House' to me says prison.
