So I have this thing where I can not see any movies, shows, cartoons, animations, whatever that have animals in it. I get stressed and cry and it just rips my heart out.
I walked out of a movie theater watching "Two Brothers". I can't do it and have done well keeping away from that stuff. When DS had to watch "Black Stallion" for a project, I left the room. Never watched Lassie or Old Yeller.
Last night I was watching the CMA's and a commercial came on for the new animated Dumbo movie. And it wasn't just a short blip in the movie, it was a full 2 minutes long. Seriously, I was crying and my heart was breaking. I had to mute the TV and scroll through Facebook to get my attention elsewhere.
Tell me there are others out there like me?

I never used to be like that before I had my kid, and these days (8+ years later) I find myself tearing up watching stuff like The Grinch, LOL. All I will say is that it’s a *hugely bad* idea for a pregnant woman to watch Marley and Me. I honestly don’t know what I was thinking there, and was so glad I was at home at the time because I was doing the ugly cry. Even my DH who I would normally give the side-eye to for crying during Hallmark commercials himself looked at me like, “Who IS this woman and what have you done with my wife?”
Pretty much anything remotely sad or even sentimental with kids or animals will set me off these days, and I try to just stuff it back so I don’t look so dumb in public. Every time my kid sings in some school performance thing, I know I’d better bring some kleenex! It’s that bad. You’re not alone. I’ll be sitting on that bench (crying needlessly) next to you!

I get very upset over harming animals in movies. Someone posted a site here not too long ago that you could look up movies and it would tell you if an animal died or was mistreated in it and the exact time it happened during the film. I though I bookmarked it, but it must be on my laptop. And I know what you mean about Dumbo, the damn cartoon had me balling as a kid, I can't imagine what the live action would do to me.

My mother, in her infinite wisdom, took me to a movie theater to see Bambi when I was five. Oh dear god. When they killed his mother I totally lost it and became hysterical. I’ve detested animal movies, tv shows, documentaries, etc ever since. With a fiery passion hate.
My DH knows this, but cruelly took me to see Eight Below. I walked out. It was very traumatic for me. I now refuse to watch ANY show where there is even the most remote possibility an animal will die.

My husband was forbidden by his mother to watch lassie. He can even listen to the green sleeves without starting to cry.

I don't watch animal movies as a general rule. Ones where I know the animal will get hurt or die specifically. I'd probably be okay with animated ones like Dumbo or Bambi but then again I haven't seen either in 40+ years so who knows.

I don’t like dog and cat movies for a different reason - I really hate dogs and cats. I have no interest, don’t care what happens to them, and feel nothing except grossed out. I was rooting for that ugly rat dog to get eaten in The Meg

scrappert you mean you can't watch a movie with an animal in it, or just ones where they get hurt? I find movies where cats are intentionally harmed the hardest for me. But I love movies with animals where the dog gets to be the hero or whatever. So I don't about movies with animals. The Black Stallion is actually a good animal story other than the rough handling he got at the beginning. Dumbo was the WORST. They tore him from his mother. It was heartbreaking. I hate it to this day, even worse than when Bambi's mom got killed.

My answer is that my family knows not to utter just the words “Old Yeller” because I will start crying.

I have a really hard time watching movies where animals or harmed, or when I know they're going to die at the end.
I once sobbed uncontrollably just switching channels and some Tarzan movie from the late 80s was on and someone shot Tarzan's "father"--an ape.

I just watched Homeward Bound, which I've seen multiple times, and still cried. I always cry for pets, ET and Baymax from Big Hero 6 My dh got me the movie Hachi for Christmas one year. Ugh, that was a huge tear jerker and I'm not fond of that movie at all

We watched Hachi last summer and yeah, we ALL cried over that one! One of our dogs is kind of like that, he will sit and wait by the window for DH for hours every day when DH is at work. In fact, he’s doing it right now. But I don’t let him wait outside, I make him come in.

I also have the same problems watching movies where animals are mistreated. You can do anything you want to adults in movies as far as I am concerned but I have a very difficult time watching mistreatment of animals and also small children. I hate to say it but it's more difficult for me when it comes to animals than small children. I think it's because I KNOW inside the child is an actor. With animals it just rips my heart out. Any animal from dogs and cats to wild animals being portrayed on the screen in a movie. I hated the movie "Eight Below" and will never watch it again. I boycotted the movie "A Dog's Purpose" after the rumor came out about the German Shepherd Dog being mistreated during filming.
Regarding the movie "Hachi" I did watch it and I loved it. But watching it once was enough for me. I can't deal with the emotional pain more than that. The reason I liked it so much is because it is based on a true story of a dog in Japan. When I went back to Japan in 2008 on a tour with DS (first lived there for 6 months way back in 1984) I was able to visit the statue of Hachi that is located near the train station in Tokyo.

I was teaching a 7th grade reading class and they were the worst assortment of miscreants ever assembled. I maneuvered a unit together where I could play the movie as a culminating activity. I had every one of those hard hearted little S.O.B.’s in tears. After that they were little lambs for the remainder of the year. Dead dogs and Richard Gere to the rescue!

Does the Dog Die website is probably the best thing that has happened on the internet. Prior to finding that site I would have to ask kids at school if I could watch certain movies because I cannot watch anything where an animal is hurt, mistreated, or dies. The Dumbo commercial had me in tears, no way in hell will I see that movie.
My husband wonders what is wrong with me, because I love sad movies as long as it is people, not animals. Love Story, Untamed Heart, Steel Magnolias, bring ‘em on. Just mention My Dog Skip and I am a blubbery mess.

I have to find out if the animal makes it before I will start a movie with an animal. When The Lucky One came out on tv, I was five minutes into it and had to pause it to find out if the dog makes it.

I did read The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe for 25+ years and the chapter where Aslan is shaved and killed was so painful for each class. The WORST book to read was The Faithful Elephants. It is a true story of putting down the elephants in the zoo before the bomb was dropped on Hiroshima. I sent it home with a kid and then had them read it to the class the next day because I couldn't but I wanted the kids to hear the repercussions of war. And Richard Gere dying in Somersby still pisses me off to this day.

Tell me there are others out there like me? I can't do any animal movies. Mine started at young age...I was taken to see Lady and The Tramp when I was about 3yo and had to be taken out of the cinema because I was sobbing "poor Lady" so loudly after the dog catcher scene. All those early Disney films traumatised me - Bambi's mother being Killed, Dumbo being ripped away from his mother, Cruella wanting to make a coat of puppies. Those old men at Disney have a lot to answer for, seriously, who thought that abandoned baby animals would be appropriate stories for little children? I avoid all films with animals in them as I know I'll be a sobbing mess. Even if nothing happens to the animal...I'm always worrying that it will, so I'm anxious through the whole movie. Live animals, cartoons it doesn't matter. It now extends to audiobooks as well, usually as soon as something negative about an animal is mentioned I can pull the headphones off and then skip forward a little until it's over. I don't know why so many authors need to include animal cruelty in books - even in ones where it's not to be expected.

Those dumbo trailers are the worst! I managed to make it through 5 seconds before I was in tears and was turning it off.
I tend to avoid movies where the central characters are animals and sad things happen to them. Homeward bound made me cry every single time I watched it growing up. I don’t watch it now with my kids.
