My particular favorites are: 1. DH's cousin's fund for herself because she needed a break from work 2. Old HS friend started a medical fund and a month later posted pics of herself and kids on the beach in FL and at Disney 3. Actual worthy cause: mentally disabled man from hometown's house was falling apart, and community pulled together with donations to repair everything. He's a local legend at the high school games and everyone knows him. 4. Cousin started a GFM for adoption costs. I was unmoved, they're in their 20s. Found a private adoption and promptly had three more children all conceived without assistance. Glad I saved my money. Although maybe they need it more now while they build their Christian army? Another on the way. 5. I did donate to the fund set up for a local 17 yr old boy whose entire family was killed by his uncle. That story brought me to tears. Share the good and bad!

i was asked to write one for my friend by her daughter who was my hairdresser at the time.
Her Dad had had a stroke and could no longer work so it was a valid reason. However, that said, they also all had premium passes to Disneyland for the last several years, posted all over FB when they went, etc., despite us knowing they lost 2 homes to foreclosure and didn't pay rent on another and were evicted. They also don't have a thing saved for retirement as they spent it all. So writing a "send me money because I didn't plan well" didn't sit well with me, especially as my DH was on disability at the time with a career ending knee replacement.
My hairdresser fired me as a client as a result. My friend still talks to me though. Daughter still has Disneyland passes, but Mom and Dad don't. People are freaking weird!

I don't think I've ever seen one personally. Oh wait, that's not true! There was an explosion in our neighborhood and they took up a collection for the families affected. Was happy to contribute to that one.

Mine are a family member who raised money for a piano for a child dying of cancer. Child had full ride music scholarship and died in October. Another was for a friend who's infant died and her husband died several years later from the same disease. Truly worthy causes.

My husbands cousins daughter started one for herself asking for $1 million dollars. NOT JOKING!!
I believe she had just turned 19, dropped out of college because it was too hard and people were mean to her. Then she tried just about every MLM available and failed at them. Which isn't hard to do when you only shill for sales to your FB friends. She has done Luluroe, vitamins, that plexus stuff, DoTerra, 31, tupperware and Mary Kay (I'm sure I'm forgetting more). But, she wanted $1 million to start her own bridal business because it was her dream!!!!
I don't think she ever got a single penny. And in the last few years she's started, dropped out and restarted beauty school. Then her dream was to become a pastry chef when she went to work at a bakery. Guess that was too hard because now she says she's going back to school to become a midwife.
Seriously, I cannot look away!!

A coworker and her husband were walking down their street after going to a nearby yard sale. They were struck by a drunk driver, her husband was killed instantly and she has permanent brain damage from the injuries she sustained and will never work again. The hospital unit started a GFM and raised thousands of dollars overnight to support her teenage daughter who will now be caring for her mother for the rest of her life. That’s the kind of cause I want to give to support.

Actually a worthy cause. My friend's husband needed a kidney transplant. He had great insurance and a donor lined up but still needed funding to help support his friend who was donating the kidney through his own recovery period. We raised it all and a bit extra in less than a week! It was one of those "people are beautiful" experiences.

GFMs are pet peeves of mine. I see them all the time for funerals and it drives me insane. I get irrationally angry over it so I'll just say this - get a burial/funeral policy or life insurance for yourself. And your spouse. And your children.

Have never given to one. Have had 3 friends set up a GFM. One for a seizure dog (no longer has the dog). One for a surf dog who has cancer.
And one for living expenses while child had a multi organ transplant at CHLA. The RMH and small apartment paid for by SSI wasn't good enough for the family, so they wanted an apartment in LA. And wanted it fully furnished. With food, gas, etc money. Funny thing it instead of keeping the items, they sold it all and went on vacations. When he was back at CA for organ failure, they needed everything again. People questioned where previous donations were and weren't happy.
I have helped out friends with a homemade meal but I dont give money.
It rubs me the wrong way because ds was extremely sick. Spent 6 month out of a year at Children's. Dh still worked. Parents helped with dd. We paid for everything insurance disnt cover. Sure it sucked and was a financial strain and my parents helped here and there but for pete's sake, its no one elses responsibility.
Dont like the 1 bedroom apartment that is furnished or RMH? Suck it up or cover the cost of the super expensive apartment you want instead. Have 1 parent continue to work.
Ugh.

I’ve donated to several go fund me endeavors, including for a few peas and other worthwhile causes.
The ones I don’t appreciate are my from one of my nieces who asked for help to buy a car or surgery for her pet.

That shouldn't matter in the world of Go Fund Me, right? ETA: On a more serious note, I've only contributed to one GFM. A very close friend was helping to raise funds for a new building for a little school in Angola (Africa, not Louisiana). She is a dedicated teacher and has spent all of her DH's assignment there working with this school. It was a worthy cause and I trusted the person in charge so DH & I made a contribution. Other than that instance, I've not been approached by anyone else.

I see all kinds on FB and the news for anything from funeral expenses to expenses for families whose loved one is sick and then all kinds of crazy ones in between.
I wish we had a friend do one for us when Spencer was hospitalized the financial strain was really overwhelming. We are still recovering from it. I couldn't imagine not being with him but the strain it took on us was at times hard to deal with. Hack even a casserole dish would have been nice LOL
There was a family in ICU the same time as Spencer who had a GFM set up for them and they had over 100, 000 raised for them. I feel some get so high that you wonder about them being abused.
The one for the Humboldt hickey team was at the 13 million mark and I wonder when it gets that high and involves so many people who and how the money is decided to be divided amongst the group.

By the miracle of God it was covered but then low and behold she had bills she couldn't afford but could afford gross eat out food and trips. Hu...

I've never seen a 'tacky' go fund me and I've given to a lot of different ones. There was one recently for a teacher at our high school who lost her baby and both parents won't be able to work for a while, I gave a couple of hundred to that one. Another one for a high school football coach who developed a degenerative muscular disease and has 3 kids at the high school - I gave to that one too. Also often my friends will post fundraisers for their birthdays to give to a good cause, I try to donate to those too (just last night I donated to a fundraiser for cystic fibrosis)

The one for SCOTUS Bart Mc Beerface was a real head scratcher, for me. DH received a request for help with a coworkers daughters wedding. She wanted to upgrade from the Rose Garden at the Disneyland Hotel, to in front of the castle... Hard pass! We've been saving for DD16.5 wedding since she saw her first Disneyland bride, at 3 years old.
I was excited to donate to the Black Voters Matter bus gas fund this election cycle. I will continue to support them and their amazing work. I have never been invited to a frivolous GFM, IMO. Off the top of my head... DS teammate had a stoke at 16, and I contributed to help his single mom take unpaid time off work to care for him. Another one of DS friends died in a freak and tragic skateboarding accident. I contributed to help with his funeral expenses and specialty mental health care for his twin brother, that was not covered by their insurance. I contributed to a coworker of DH when he needed to take extended unpaid paternity leave, because his daughter was born without a nose, eyes or ears. I am a regular contributor to Change The Ref (mass shooting awareness/prevention started by Parkland parents Manuel& Patricia Oliver, that lost their son Guaq.)I donated to several friends and friends of my kids that were injured or died in the Route 91 massacre. I really take the time to appreciate my blessings when I contribute.

I don’t do go fund mes. Most are ridiculous money grabs. Worthy causes can usually find valid funding sources. Previously before everyone became so damn self entitled, families and friends willingly gave time, effort and funding to help out. Until that got abused. And social media opened the world up to legitimized begging for every little thing. I do give to select charities and organizations and assist when and where I feel it is legitimate. I just hate the constant begging.

I got turned off on "fund me" type donations, at the original twopeas.
There was a lady named Liz( I think that was her name, correct me if I am wrong) who received a kidney(or was it a liver?), from what I understood she was advised not to get pregnant. She wanted a baby so she got pregnant. Then because of having the baby, she needed a new kidney to replace the first donated kidney.
She received the 2nd kidney, during which time she cried "poor, broke, help, need money, can't work right now....or something like that". The peas generously gave. Then awhile later, she posted photos at Disney. Someone called her out on it. If I recall correctly she said along the lines of "oh we had that vacation money already saved, but didn't want to use it for my kidney recovery, because that money was for Disney". Peas were pissed.
All these years later, I still remember how she took advantage. Entitled people and behavior like that, makes me not want to donate to any "fund me" type stuff.

I do donate to GFM efforts when I feel the ask is legitimate and the need real. I know there are shady asks as well. I think it can be an invaluable way to help someone in genuine need.

There was a local family that's daughter was dying from DIPG (brain cancer). They must have raised over a million between all the gofundme campaigns they set up. The parents were on the rocks when she was diagnosed. They flew her around the world to multiple experimental medical things. Mom was convinced that she would be the first child to beat DIPG. They divorced sometime during her illness. 6 months after she passed away the mom set up another one to pay for IVF because she decided she needed a baby to help her heal from losing her daughter - and she already had another daughter.

I saw a GFM page for someone's child's travel team expenses and fees. First of all, these people were a dual income family living in the same 'hood as I do but in a much larger and more updated home than I. Secondly, I was a single mom barely making it on an RN salary (nurses are grossly underpaid in this area) and I had a child in an upper level travel program at a college recruiting level while this other kid was in middle school. Same club but we were at the higher level and our fees were double that of the other teams. I know that because we were at that level in middle school ourselves. Of course, these same people are driving around in their newer SUVs and expensive cars and she's posting her whereabouts eating at the swanky places in town. Nope. You can take your GFM page and shove it.
I did give to one earlier this year. A young woman who worked as a paramedic and had an unknown history of severe depression had a set of twins out of wedlock. He did not want to marry her and she fell into a deeper depression/ post-partum depression, and ultimately took her own life. She had nothing and her mother was a piece of shit, too and said she didn't have any money. The EMS community started a GFM page to help pay for funeral expenses and something for her babies. It was a truly sad situation.

My niece currently has one, set up by another aunt. My niece is about six-weeks old and has been in and out of the NICU/PICU for the past three weeks due to a systemic infection and multiple issues arising from that. She’s the youngest of seven, and I believe only my brother works, so I chipped in some to help them out. But generally I do avoid GFMs and also can’t believe the balls on some people - what they are asking for and why .

My friends seem to share GFM's on their walls but don't pay.
I don't really understand. If you don't think it's worthy, then just move on. But you think other people should pay?

I do not give to people who set one up for themselves. I have a friend who set one up to pay vet bills for her dog. Yet they go on lavish vacations, buy expensive clothing and shoes that she always shows on Facebook.
I did donate to a girl I went to high school with who has Leukemia. And I also gave for another high school friend who died, had no family and no money to pay for funeral expenses because he was so ill for the last couple of years he couldn't work. This one was set up by our High School alumni group.

The one for the Humboldt hickey team was at the 13 million mark and I wonder when it gets that high and involves so many people who and how the money is decided to be divided amongst the group. There is actually a committee that has been set up to administer the fund. The committee includes a judge, a financial advisor and a couple of hockey people. There has been an initial payout of $50k to each person or family affected. There has been almost the reverse of a cash grab going on - the dad of one of the boys with a spinal cord injury has said it should just be split evenly, but the dad of one of the boys killed has said more money should go to those boys who will have life long expenses related to their injuries. Saskatchewan has actually passed laws in regard to the handling of these situations.
