I recently contributed to a high school girls basketball team. A booster/parent embezzled their money they had raised to pay for tournaments. It was great how the local community came together for them. They will eventually, hopefully, be repaid, but that would not help the girls this year.
A cousin's daughter was ridiculous. My cousin died and her daughter wanted money for funeral expenses, travel expenses for her, her BFF, and DD to fly up here to spread the ashes. Then, she wanted money for necklaces to hold a bit of the ashes, hotel rooms, and someone to host a luncheon. I don't think she got anything.

I have contributed to 2 GFM. One was set up for a manager at work that suddenly died at 41 years old. They were asking for money to help with the burial.
A co-worker at Walmart, his pregnant 20yo daughter was in a car accident and died. It was very unexpected and they were also raising money for the mother & babies funeral.
I've seen several crazy ones my extended family have put up but I just tend to read and move on.

I never - not never ever - give to GFM. No one should. If you think someone is worthy of the money, please send it directly to them as GFM takes a pretty hefty percentage of the money. Not worth it.

I joke that I'm going to set up one for fixing all my Dad's cats. Went for a visit and they now have 10 cats IN THE HOUSE (4 new adorable kittens). They have a huge ferel cat problem. My Dad loves them all and tames the ones he can get his hands on. They brobably have 30 cats outside.
He's been working on getting them fixed then released. It's $25 per male / $35 per female..............

Other agencies will also do it and both will help with catching them.

Friends of ours were killed in a car accident I gave money to the go fund me set up to help their kids 17 and 21. I was also going to donate to the Humboldt Broncos' GFM but by the time I was ready to it was already into the mutli millions.
At that time I was not aware of how much GFM took in the future I will fond a way to donate directly

I donated to one here in Wisconsin a year or two ago. The family had (I think) seven kids, and number eight was on the way. On the way to the hospital, Dad hit a deer and was killed, leaving Mom to raise eight kids. It was completely legitimate, and it certainly felt right to assist this family.

I set one up recently. Our employee's home was struck in the middle of the night by lightning and the entire home burned down. He escaped in his pajamas, with his dogs, and nothing else. Insurance will ultimately cover most things, but that didn't help him with the shoes, clothes, medications, groceries, etc, that he needed immediately. I found a competitor to GoFundMe that charged lower fees. We raised a little chunk of change that helped with the immediate stuff. The biggest and most touching surprise was that a college roommate of my hubby's, with whom we are facebook friends but otherwise not much in touch, saw it and sent a very significant donation.
That's the only one I've ever participated in.
