From my friend--she dropped a note to say her DH had his comment printed in NYT.
Here's the op-ed in the NY Times. www.nytimes.com/2018/11/15/opinion/sadie-hawkins-women-ask-men-out.html?commentsHere's my comment, which they printed. GWC | Dallas I grew up in Kansas City, Kansas. In the winter of 1962, I was a 9th-grader in junior high school. On a gray January day, I was on the bus with our basketball team as we headed across town to play one of our city rivals. I was scorekeeper. When we disembarked, the team headed to the locker room and I went to the scorer's table to set up shop. That didn't take long and I had time to look around the gym. Off in the left corner, the rival team's cheerleaders were going through their paces. One girl caught my eye, and I continued to look in her direction throughout the game. The following year, our junior high classes entered high school. On the first day, I saw her standing in a crowd with her friends. I made some inquiries and found out she had a boyfriend. Even if she were unattached, I wouldn't have had the guts to approach her, let alone ask her out. The following year -- junior year -- I immediately noticed that she was in my English class. One day in late September, the bell rang for the mass shuffle to the next period. I was gathering up my books and papers and looked up to see her coming in my direction. She was smiling and I looked behind me to see if she was approaching someone else. But she stopped in front of me and asked if I'd like to be her date for a friend's party. When I'd regained my composure, I said yes. In July 2019, we'll celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary. I'm confident this would not be the case if she hadn't approached me first.

My mom's HS had a "Sadie Hawkins Dance" where the girls had to ask the boys. I had no idea it was a day on the calendar.
My own HS had the same thing, but it was called "Turnabout Dance."

I have no patience with women who complain that their boyfriend won't propose. If you want to get married, tell him or ask him. Why in the world would you allow such an important decision to be decided by one half of the couple? For all the woman power happening in 2018, why is this still an issue?
ETA: okay, not exactly Sadie Hawkins subject, but same principle. There should be no need for a special Sadie Hawkins dance.

our school still has one called turnabout. although technically they changed the name three years ago. The school's position is that in an age of gender and sexual fluidity what is 'turn-about'. the kids all still call it by its original name and among the straight kids the girls do ask the boys

Not Sadie Hawkins, but if I hadn't asked DH out for out first (and second) date he would probably still be sitting in a very small room with a really big TV on a hand-me-down 1970's orange sofa.
Hmm, I should remind him to thank me. LOL!

We had one in my high school called "backwards". It was fun bc it eliminated the stigma of asking the boy and even created an incentive to do so. I think that's important. Unfortunately, it might also reinforce traditional gender roles like lisacharlotte mentioned about marriage.

We had a Sadie Hawkins dance, usually held in the winter. You were considered to be part of a long term relationship if you went with the same date to Homecoming and Sadie Hawkins!

We had a Sadie Hawkins dance at my HS. At my kids HS it’s called Winter Formal.

I remember our school had a Sadie Hawkins dance too. I wish I could go back in time and ask another boy to go with me though. I went to every dance with the guy I ended up marrying. We were together from the 6th grade on. I was much too young and immature to be marrying without having dated more. Or really, dating any other guys for any length of time. I would like to think I had the self assurance to ask a guy out now. We’ll see.
