I traded in my Chevy HHR which drove like a car for a Nissan Rogue. I love the Rogue. It’s higher off the ground, drives smooth and is roomy.

I found the opposite to be true last year when I was mini van shopping. Most manufacturers are getting away from mini vans and going to suvs. There are 5 dealerships in my town not one of them stocked a minivan and I think ford no longer makes a van. Just the utility vans. I don't think it's that there are so many minivans but the new SUVs almost look like minivan style. All rounded and aerodynamic instead of boxy and utilitarian. I see what you mean. I think the car manufacturers have attempted to appease both mini van people and suv people with one vehicle. And that sucks. I absolutely love my mini van and was so glad to get out of my Jeep. But others want the more utility in the suv and aren’t getting what they want either. You would think the manufacturers would listen considering what they charge for these vehicles!

I agree with you OP. My dh has a 2017 Honda Pilot, looks just like a mini van to me. I hate that look.
I recently bought a new car & was in the same predicament.
The only SUVs that didn't look like mini vans to me were the Toyota 4 Runner and the Ford Explorer. I eliminated the 4-Runner because they are rear wheel drive unless you kick them into 4WD and I passed on the Explorer because I've had bad luck with Fords, although I'm sure they are better now. I ended up with a Lexus RX450. It's more of a crossover look but it's AWD. Good luck!!

They are all minivans and round. I will be getting a new car soon. I would like a small SUV. Why, oh why, did they do away with SUV’s? I want square. I want to ride off the ground. I want a freaking SUV. Such issues in my life. Lol! Agree. The new SUVs look like a cross between a minivan and a station wagon, not a desirable look.

I admit I've never understood concerns about look where cars are concerned. All I care about is affordability, utilitarianism/use ability, and as little negative environmental impact as possible.

Another validation for you OP. I have a 2009 Pilot that is affectionately nicknamed "The Rectangle." As soon as I saw the new body style Pilot, I thought, that doesn't even LOOK like a Pilot. It looks like every other mid-sized SUV. Fortunately, I am beyond the point of needing a big car for cross country trips, transporting water polo teams, etc. Next car is going to be smaller and fun. Side note: this homogenization of SUVs has got to be aggravating for law enforcement when witnesses are trying to id a vehicle since they all look the same. "Well officer, it was sort of ovalish and not a truck or a convertible. Oh, and it was grey!"

I traded in my Chevy HHR which drove like a car for a Nissan Rogue. I love the Rogue. It’s higher off the ground, drives smooth and is roomy. I miss my HHR because it was so much easier to spot! Dh still has his. I had to trade mine in only because there was an issue with a cylinder misfiring which set off the check engine light and made it so the car could not pass inspection in NJ. We tried everything except replacing the engine. I now have a VW Tiguan. I had a Chevy Blazer in the past, so I've been high off the ground before but never drove a car like this on a regular basis. I cannot believe the difference and may never go back. Incredibly smooth, powerful and it feels so sturdy. I don't know how else to describe the drive. Huge difference from any other car I've owned.

Lol! I was wondering this too!
I will be in the market for a new SUV in a year or so, so I’ve been looking around now.
A lot of them seem to look like minivans to me too, which due to my (admittedly irrational 😂) hatred of minivans, narrows my choices down considerably.

I’m currently leaning heavily towards a Suburu Crosstek. Smaller than my current SUV, but not minivan-like at all. 😂 Also priced right, and has a lot of great features.

I just bought a Subaru Forester Sport. My ODS bought an Outback about 2.5 months ago. I was waffling back and forth between the Forester and the Crosstrek. I was trading a 2010 Ford Edge. Which I loved!! My body is in such a pickle that I just can't do getting in and out of cars. So I was looking for height that you get with a crossover. The Crosstrek is so cute and sporty and came in a really cute color, something to do with a khaki but looks baby bluish. The price was right. I agree on the features, also very good. BUT when I sat in one, I felt like I was in a car. It feels low and it just was small on the inside. The salesperson did say they get so many "lift" upgrades with the Crosstrek. BUT that took away the cost savings that I would get. I ended up going with the Forester. That thing is perfection to me right now.

I guess our neighbor didn't like the fact we ended up with an Outback like them as they went and got the new Forester last weekend. Our salesman told us it was set for redesign and it looks cute. I told hubby he should go rent one for a long weekend just to mess with our neighbor! LOL
I was reading something on the new Crosstrek Hybrid, the review was bad because it has less power than the gas powered model, but the comments made me sad. I don't think people get that if you buy a Subaru, you're not the buyer looking to see how fast you can go from 0-60.
My friend bought a 4Runner from a Lexus dealer - she has beat that thing including 9 months of the year going off road mapping land for BLM. In all sorts of weather and road surfaces, up mountains and down that thing has pulled thru every time. She takes it off-roading regularly with her husband's Jeep club. They've gone from mocking her (being the only Toyota) to respecting it - only vehicle not to have broken something on a trail.
Gotta ask about that Mercedes thing - it reminds me of a troop carrier like the Hummer and just looks harsh to ride in. Is it magically comfortable inside - that price is should have a unicorn!

I have looked at every major manufacturer. I do not like the crossover look. They all sit too low and have a rounded back end. Maybe I need to spend more time on the lots and not looking online. I will look up the ones mentioned here. Thank you! I really wish they had the old body style of the Explorer or Escape. I hate the rounded back look. Every time I see a late model Pathfinder I want to vomit. Those things are so ugly with this neo-minivan look. Yuck.

Get a Jeep Wrangler. Though when I test drove them recently, I had to admit to myself that I really prefer comfort and I bought another Chrysler 300. I think I am still going to get one eventually because I love camping in the mountains. My son has one. My neighbor recently purchased a Jeep Wrangler. He loves it except for the windshield.

I get it TankTop I prefer the boxier SUVS too. My Tahoe is an older model and Im ready to bite the bullet this springs and buy something new. I hate the new Tahoe body style, it looks like a hearse. So I've been looking at Jeep Rubicons/Wranglers, Ford Flexs and a few others. But my dream boxy luxury SUV is a Mercedes G Wagon. Totally not in my price range...but hey that's why it's a dream car. ![](https://www.mobmasker.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/Mercedes-Benz-G-Wagon-cool-10.png) I kinda love G wagons. My daughter, who is about to get her license, hates them, so I torture her by telling her I love them and I’m getting one. I have a Land Rover LR4 which is also super boxy and I love driving that thing. It’ll get passed down to my daughter when she starts driving.

FWIW, Ford Escapes, Honda CRVs, and Toyota RAV4s are all built on car chassis, not truck chassis. None of them have ever been true SUVs which are built on truck chassis. They’ve always been cross-overs. That hasn’t stopped people from loving them - in fact their smooth car-like ride is part of what is so appealing.

Jeep Patriot. but not sure if has 3rd row seat, not sure you are wanting that or not..I'm a Jeep girl, and I'm totally disappointed in what the Jeep Cherokees look like now, they don't even deserve the name of Cherokee.. The Patriot is what the Cherokee should have grown up to be,I'm really irrationally mad over it LOL,
That said have you looked at the Highlander? I like them, and I know someone who had a RAV4 that I just loved.. My daugher recently bought a Honda Element, not sure if they are still being made though but its nice and square..I know someone who recently got a Dodge Journey, but to me it's a van with normal doors..

As someone who drives a minivan (we have five kids) out of necessity, it makes me giggle when I see someone who is antiminivan driving one of these SUVs that looks nearly identical to a minivan.

I drove the Ford Flex while on vacation in Wisconsin for two weeks over Halloween and the beginning of this month. It was a box, literally. Sometimes a bit tough to parallel park or pull into a straight-in parking place because of the slightly larger than midsize SUV size and the straight angle of it.I was definitely glad to get back home to my Subaru Forrester though and nothing about the Flex made me want to buy it!

I've driven a minivan almost nonstop since 1999 (minus one horrible year with a sedan and 3 kids in carseats/boosters) and always kind of cringed at the minivan hate over the years. I know they aren't always the popular choice but with 3 kids and several cross-country driving trips it was always the best option for us. Tons of cargo space and comfortable seating with lots of room for everyone. ![](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/MSZirfLXsDTg15EDMD9C.jpg) Plus no smacking of neighboring cars' doors when the kids got out at the store. But I'm ready for something smaller now, but not quite as small as a sedan. So fake SUV it is.
