After really careful consideration I plan on asking Santa for the Cricut Explore. I have the 1st generation Cricut ( the one that cuts 6"x12" .) I've used it quite a bit over the years & it still works fine.
I have approx. 60 cartridges.
It is my understanding that I will load those carts into my Explore thus linking them. & not needing the actual cartridges ever again. It is also my understanding that I/someone else can use those carts on another machine . They just could never link to their Explore.
My really good friend who I crop with occasionally (we live a few hours from each other) said. When I mentioned getting the Explore, " oh good! Now you can sell me your little Cricut. ".
What to you think it is worth?v

Technically - you can't do that with the carts. .. (But you can)..
When the Explore was launched on HSN the host mentioned selling the carts to pay for the new machine. Oopsie! Not what Provo Craft had in mind. It is against their "terms of use" and they will sometimes go after people selling them on eBay and such, but selling them to your friend shouldn't be a problem.
You don't load them "in" the Explore. You do use the port on the Explore to link them to your Design Space account. You cannot use the Explore without it being hooked to the internet. It will not function at all without an internet connection. There is nothing stored on the machine itself or on your own computer. It is all in the "cloud" and dependent on Provo Craft/Cricut. When they go down for maintenance or crash - you cannot use your machine. As far as I know - this is pretty rare now.
Note that the value of most of them has gone way down, due to the subscription feature of the Explore. You can subscribe and get the content of the non licensed carts (Disney, CTMH, etc. are licensed and I don't think you can get those in a subscription)
If you have Hello Kitty - that is worth some coin.
Your friend would not be able to use them with CCR either - only plugging them right into the machine.
Personally - I would keep the little one for using the carts and buy a Silhouette.

Agree with everything said about. Beyond that, I don't think the original 6x12 Cricuts are worth much at all. I know a couple of friends who sold their's a few years ago for $50.

When I got Big Cricut I sold Little Cricut with only one cartridge, 2 packs of unopened mats and the rolling suitcase tote for $40.
ETA I agree with iowagirl. Keep the Cricut and your most favorite cartridges and get a silhouette.
