I’d keep my storage locker that I bought and everything inside it.
That’s the game - you’ll probably get crap, you might get a treasure.
There’s no take backsies.

I saw this on the news and my thought was 'why give them any of the money back?"

I heard the “buyers” settled for $2+ million and gave the rest back. Rumors are that once they found out who “owned” the money, they settled. I’m thinking mafia underworld or drug cartel.
Hollywood should make this into a movie, except with a different ending.

If it was me I'd say thank you very much for the 1.2M, and return the rest to the person it belongs to.

Same circumstances? I'd settle. And hope they didn't change their minds and want the settlement money back too. The money is most certainly dirty.

What a weird situation though. Who just leaves 7.5 million in a safe in a storage locker? Does one really forget that they just have millions of dollars literally just lying around? 😂

Maybe they were unable to get back to it. Maybe in jail or something.

No mob or cartel involvement? I’d keep it. I’d probably give them back any personal items but not money.

no mob involved? I'd keep it and not be running around telling people about it for sure.

I’d keep my storage locker that I bought and everything inside it. I agree. If you buy it, you don't know what you will get. If someone had $7M stored in a safe in the storage shed, they should have made sure they made the monthly payment on the shed so as to not have their stuff sold at auction. They give you late notices on things like that - they could have cleaned out their shed or paid their monthly rental fees. They obviously had the money to pay it, wonder why they didn't? I feel like the person that bought it should keep everything that was in it, including the money.

I don't think there's any moral obligation to return the money. But I can't say what I'd do without more specifics - it's almost certainly ill-gotten gains and would I be putting myself in legal jeopardy by keeping it? If it's stolen money or proceeds of illegal activity, could I be committing a crime myself if I kept it? I'd consult with attorneys before deciding anything. I'd be unlikely to return the money to the owners in any case; it would either get turned over to the authorities or I'd keep it, depending on legal advice.

My ODS just called me yesterday, I think, and asked me this question. I told him if I bought the storage unit then all in there was mine. If Joe Schmoe from the town didn't remember his safe in the unit, then I couldn't help that.
NOW, in reading the rest of the thread, if I found out it was dirty money and my life and my family's lives would be in danger due to who owned it, then I might be giving it back. Don't even know if I would take the settlement.

Okay I was just wondering compared to everyone else.. yeah I think I would keep it too if there wasn't any kind of illegal stuff going on. But straight across the board, I would keep it and definitely shut my mouth.

I haven’t heard this story, but why would you tell anyone other than a lawyer and the IRS? Or is there a law that you have to let the police know if you’ve “found” that amount of money and they have to impound and investigate it?
I guess I don’t see it as any different than winning that amount at a casino. Only IRS is told of your winnings over a certain amount. I certainly wouldn’t be blabbering it all over the internet or TV.

But straight across the board, I would keep it and definitely shut my mouth. The thing is... you can't just keep that kind of cash without saying anything. You'd owe taxes on it and I'm pretty sure that's going to trigger some official questions about the source of the cash. Or else you don't claim it, which means you're committing a crime and you have to keep all that cash somewhere.

I'd like to think I would keep it and travel, but without knowing for sure where the money came from and the story behind it, I would probably not spend it all right away.
ETA: That whole Golden Rule thing kind of ruins it for me.

I would start buying cash cards that don’t go out of date.
I would use it to buy all my groceries/sundries and pay utilities in cash. My utilities aren’t that much and it isn’t unusual for people to still pay in cash here. As long as you aren’t buying luxury goods you can keep it to yourself.

You can also give small cash gifts to your children. Up to ten grand a year without reporting it.

But I also wouldn't be announcing what was in the locker like "Hey everybody there's $7.5M dollars in here!". I'd be quietly driving myself to the bank.
