Absolutely no judging here, but just stating how surprised I am that the majority would try and keep it all. It's said that there's a sucker born every minute. I think on my birthdate way back when, I was one of them ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/Q_m8lDOvc_3Le3r1GKdf.jpg)

You can also give small cash gifts to your children. Up to ten grand a year without reporting it. $14k

I'd keep my mouth shut and enjoy my brand new life. ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) Seriously, who does that? "Heyyyyyy, lookie what I found! 7 MILLION DOLLARS!" This! The thing is... you can't just keep that kind of cash without saying anything. You'd owe taxes on it and I'm pretty sure that's going to trigger some official questions about the source of the cash. Or else you don't claim it, which means you're committing a crime and you have to keep all that cash somewhere. Cayman Islands might be a nice retirement spot.... Isn't that where the rich keep their money. Better yet, Switzerland, I've already lived there and know my way around a bit. Of course, I'm really too much of a rule follower and would have to report it to the IRS. So the mob would find out and off me.

You don’t pay (for an extended period, not like missing one month, and with mandatory notifications) and the contents become the property of the unit owners, who are free to do with it what they wish. The original owners had ample opportunity to rectify the situation and retain their property but didn’t. If you bought a house that had been foreclosed for a great price, would you turn around and give the original owner part or all of your equity? It’s the same situation.

Cause the first thing I thought was 'yes I would keep the money, I bought it and the contents are mine' THEN I thought, well is that ethical? Is that right? Well, why isn't it? The owners didn't pay. No matter what is in the locker it now belongs to you. You did it the right way. It's not stealing. Now maybe there is circumstances that would change my mind.. maybe an old couple with Alzheimer's, or I don't know.. something weird... As long as it isn't mob money and I am running for my life... I'm gonna keep it. And I am not telling anyone unless I have to. I would probably let the majority of it sit in the safe for quite a long time before I even figure out what I would do. Calling an attorney probably, a financial adviser or the like.

Calling an attorney probably, a financial adviser or the like. That's exactly where my mind went. We cared for my MIL for the last 10 years of her life. She had Alzheimer's and due to a mild stroke she also had asphasia - she (within a few years) lost her ability to speak and understand language. Other than that she was decently healthy (other than 4-5 serious health scares) and lived a long time with the disease. Before we realized how bad it was she was living several states away with her physically ailing husband. I don't recall the details, but a low life was in the process of buying their house (at a ridiculously low price of course) some way or another and my (then) husband had to move down there and work remotely for 3 1/2 months in early 2005 to get it legally sorted out, be named conservator, and get both of them into the care they needed. After her husband passed and we moved her up here, we found out that they owned 7 timeshare properties ![:o](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/shocked.png) We only knew about two. It took many years to get rid of those, you can't just stop paying on them, you have to find buyers. There were lots of other weird things too with their belongings and investments over the years, so I can easily see where it could have been an accident. I wouldn't have been at all surprised if we had run into something like this - but not $7M ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/Q_m8lDOvc_3Le3r1GKdf.jpg) Anyhow, I can see that my experience must be influencing my outlook. Wow, sorry to have gotten so wordy!
