I ordered 5 boxes of powdered laundry detergent plus a small bottle of cough syrup. They put all 5 boxes of detergent (about 16 lbs total) in a box that was way too big with no packing materials inside whatsoever, along with the cough syrup. Surprisingly the cough syrup survived (not the box it was in though) but one box of detergent must have shifted around too much and busted open, and about 1/4 of it was in the outer box. Who the hell thinks this is a good way to pack and ship something? Anyway I complained and got credited for the 1 box (only about $5 but my main issue was letting them know their packing sucks).

Chewy.com is also very good about this. I ordered 2 11-pound bags of cat food, a 25-pound box of litter, 3-pack of Litter Genie refills, and 3 bags of Smartbites hairball treats. All of it was put in the same box; however, the Litter Genie refills were in a small box inside, but not the treats. All the heavy weight shifting around popped 2 of the bags of treats open. It was quite a mess when I opened the box, but the cats were right there to help clean up the treats. I left packaging feedback and immediately received a shipping email and 2 bags of treats were on the way. Yesterday another box came with 2 more bags of treats.
Previously I left a review about an electronic mouse I bought. I said that the cats really loved the toy, but after about 2 weeks it quit working. I received an email stating they were crediting my card and sure enough, they did. Chewy also has fantastic customer service.

I get some things like that from Amazon. It is a couple big heavy things just tossed in a box with a random scrunched up piece of paper for packing.
I know they have quotas and only so many seconds to pack a box. I am thinking these types of packing jobs were one of those "F it - we have to get the box out" kind of things.

I got a calendar from Amazon the other day. Just a regular size wall calendar. It came in a box with room for probably a dozen calendars of it's size. I mean it was fine, just seemed wasteful.
I'm glad they compensated you!

I ordered this from Kohl's recently as a part of a much bigger order. It's a purse-sized hand sanitizer, so think of like hotel toiletry sized bottle of goo. It arrived in a box that was (I just measured it since I don't know how to post photos) 16.5" x 14.5" x 4" all by itself with not even any packing filler. I've never seen anything so ridiculous in my life!

I found and ordered one pair of jeans for my stork of a DS once and it came in box. At least 3 feet long x prob 2 foot x 1 foot. all by itself in this huge box... one pair of 28x34 jeans. <<< but that's the body that fills the jeans, not necessary to have a box that big.

I usually DO send a msg to corporations to let them know if something isn't right. I don't only do it to complain, but to possibly have them make change. I hope that every time we make them aware of something done incorrectly, at least they're aware of it and MAYBE they'll make a change.

This isn’t what I think of when I think “it pays to complain”.
This is amazon doing the bare minimum that it rightfully should have done.

At least 3 feet long x prob 2 foot x 1 foot. all by itself in this huge box... one pair of 28x34 jeans. <<< but that's the body that fills the jeans, not necessary to have a box that big. I know why this happens! The software looks at the item description(s) and tells the packer what box to use to fill the order. If the item description for the largest item says it's 34" long, and there's no override saying it's clothing that can be folded or whatnot, then the box will hold an item 34" long.
I learned this when Amazon shipped a dog leash and a (small!) keychain in a box that would hold, you guessed it, an item that's 5' long. I got on to chat to say something, and the CS agent told me how boxes are chosen. (And, yes, the packer does have permission to substitute when logical, but this packer must have decided he'd already put the keychain in the box and wasn't going to unpack the box to switch it out for a smaller one.)
When items are put into the computer, someone is supposed to make a call as to what dimensions the "box picking" software uses. There's the actual *item* dimensions, but there are also the *package* dimensions (Clothing/sheets/towels, etc. on Amazon are usually in a bag so there are set dimensions.). Screw-ups occur when the package dimensions are either left off or the item dimensions are duplicated into the package dimensions field.
Then there are times when the packer pulls the wrong size box and instead of setting it aside and getting the right one, just uses the wrong size box. That happens a lot, IMO!
And this worthless bit of knowledge will probably take up space in my brain for years, while important things come and go (and go and go and go!).

It’s weird how they pack cartons sometimes. I thought chewy was the worst for making boxes so heavy. I got this once from amazon. A small padded envelope would have been fine but no, they tossed the item in a box that could probably hold 50 of them. Attachments:

Amazon is outstanding for customer service. I mean they are excellent. Target sucks big time. Last week I had something not delivered to my son and there was no way for me to cancel. Contacted customer service and they said "your son will enjoy it no matter when it gets there." WTH? It was too late. So they told me to have him reject the package or just return it. He's in college, and can't reject packages and has no way to get to a Target to return it. Target basically just told me tough. They wouldn't do one thing even though it was supposed to be delivered last week and wasn't even going to be sent until this week. Ugh. Amazon would have credited me the entire package.

In all fairness to Amazon employees, when they are packing the orders the computer screen TELLS them what size box to use for each individual order (A7, B3, etc) so it isn't up to them what size box to use. They are told to do exactly what the computer says. So while it looks ridiculous when customers get these silly looking situations, it is Amazon policy. Do as you're told, plain and simple.
Just trying to defend those overworked/underpaid Amazon employees, just so you know why this nonsense occurs. There is to be NO "thinking outside the box" (pun intended) at Amazon. ((stepping off soapbox now))
And yes, I agree, it IS stupid and wasteful.

I ordered two small lamps from target. They came in a huge box with 1 piece of bubble wrap loosely around them. There was no other packing material and they were just bouncing around in this huge box. The lamps survived but the shades are bent and broken. I talked to customer service and they offered me 4.74 off of my new order of lamps. I have to return the broken ones to the store, too. I explained that’s the whole reason I ordered online is I’m trying to stay out of the store. I am not happy. I always have had wonderful customer service from amazon. I have had terrible customer service with Target in the store. I recently did an online chat with Target about an item that went on sale for more off than what I had recently paid in an online order. It was quick and easy. They credited my account the difference. I love Amazon customer service.

I am getting ready to complain to Amazon right now, actually.
Placed multiple orders with Amazon. All but one came. Was due 2 days ago. Needed it today. Had it sent to my box at the UPS Store (where I have all packages sent). Got an email from Amazon saying that once AGAIN, the driver could not deliver this particular package because he could not find the address. And I need to provide navigation instructions. Seriously? Same address as always. And it's the freaking UPS Store in a major shopping plaza. Kind of hard to miss.
SO annoyed. So very annoyed.

It's funny how they poorly pack the big stuff and waste packaging by put small items in the biggest box they can find. Just right packaging is what we want.
Glad they took care of you as they should.
