I'm trying to get an idea of what is "normal."
My younger kids share a bedroom. They have a considerable amount of toys in their room.
But then they also have several bins of toys on the basement storage shelves.
Are you able to fit all of their toys in their bedroom?

Yes, but we didn’t have anywhere else for them to put toys. If we had a basement or playroom, I wouldn’t have minded them having some in those spaces. Since we only have one living room, they kept all this in their own rooms.

When mine had toys, no they didn’t. I had 3 very spoiled girls and their dad and I had this crazy obsession with buying an equal amount for all 3.
Nowadays, they understand how one item can cost the same as 3 for another person.

it has depended - on their age and the set-up of our house/flat.
my youngest is 12 now - yes - all her toys live in her room (but her books don't - she has 4 bookcases in the family room - and the games are in a game cabinet in the family room as well). She also has the largest of the secondary bedrooms and doesn't share it.
When I had three people sharing one bedroom? there weren't many toys in it and my (small) living room looked like a toy shop exploded.
When we moved into this house and my girls shared a room? The little one's toys were in the family room and the older one's were in the bedroom or in a locked cabinet in the family room.
I've never had a basement or attic or even a garage so that's played a role also.

Of course my kids are grown but each had their own bedrooms. As I recall, they did not have most of their toys in their rooms. I know when they were very young I had the play kitchen in the kitchen, a slide in the family room and those cozy coupe cars. At one time I even had a ride on train going around the dining room table!
As a child I did not have any toys in my room. All the toys were in a big basement playroom.
It's funny that even though neither of my sons live at home, they still have stuff overflowing in my house. Especially DS1. He has so much of his childhood stuff and it is an ordeal when we try to go through it. Much of it is still in the garage, shed, or his old room.

Yes. We frequently purge and cull their toys so that they actually play with everything they have and we don’t get overwhelmed.

We've always had a playroom & that's where most of my kids toys were kept. My youngest is now 15, so we don't have many toys anymore so everything is in their rooms. Toys these days amount to electronics & books. We do still have a considerable amount of Legos in the playroom, that's all that's in there now.

When DD was little I rotated her toys so she had some toys in the living area, some in her room and then some stored in closets/attics.

Mine do not and have spilled over into a few other rooms. I'm constantly donating or passing on toys to younger children as my kids outgrow them. It doesn't seem to help. I'm not frequently buying toys, so I really don't get where all these toys have come from. I feel like they reproduce during the night while I am sleeping or something.

No.
They have toys in their bedrooms, the big playroom, the living room. And we have an action figure room just for Star Wars stuff.
We love toys.

older kiddo (7) has SOME toys in her room. DH built her a loft bed with storage. I'm working on getting ALL of her toys into her room. Unfortunately there are many shared toys between my kids.
younger kiddo (2.5) doesn't have any in his room.
we have a play room (used to be our dining room) with WAY too many toys in it and as soon as we can get rid of all the toys to their rooms or out of the house we will have a dining room again. That's in the far future tho since the younger is still in a crib and we have a queen size mattress in his room as well.
We also have a sterilite tower that houses our lego collection. Oh, and 2 large locking bins that store the duplos. Even when the rest of the toys make their way to bedrooms, those will still be in the living room since they are family toys and DH and I play with them with the kids quite a bit.

No, my daughter had a playroom when she was little. We didn’t keep many toys in her room.

All of their toys can totally fit in their rooms but they do have bins in a sofa table in the living room for when they play together while I am making dinner or watching TV. Legos, magnatiles, potato head, Minnie dress up dolls, stuff like that.

Yes. We have no basement. Ds has floor space and the way dds layout is, she has space around her bed. Both have walk in closets with open floor too.

No, I was never a fan of toys in the bedroom. I knew they would play with toys instead of sleeping. DS was the sort of kid to get into stuff and the kids usually played in a playroom or common space. In more than one of our houses, the formal living room was our playroom.

When my kids were small, we always had a playroom for their toys (or when I was a single mom, they had a small section of the living room to keep their toys in).

My kids shared a room with a large closet. Not walk in- just long. All of their toys fit in their room except for their sports equipment which took the place of probably what other kids had in indoor toys. My kids were outside kids and played outdoors more often than indoors. I always envied other moms who had playrooms for their kids, but looking back my kids probably wouldn't have used it.

Our kids shared a room until they were 5&7 and the only toys in their room were stuffies. We used our 3rd bedroom as a toy/play room so the toys didn't overtake the living room. Toys were allowed in the bedroom or living room during the day but had to be put away when done.
When DD turned 7, the playroom was repurposed as her bedroom and toys split between their 2 bedrooms.

No. Her stuffed animals are all in her room and so are most of her books. When we upgraded her toddler bed to a big kid bed, friends gave us a queen size bed and a clothing armoire for her room and they’re BIG. They take up a ton of the usable space in her room. Since she doesn’t ever play in her room it makes no sense for her toys to be in there.
She has a small kid sized rolling table that she uses as a desk with a small folding chair that normally is in family room. She keeps some art supplies in a small rolling cart next to it. She has several bins of toys on a low shelf in the former formal living room which has served as a play room, along with a big dollhouse and a race car train table that now holds several princess castles, and a small play kitchen setup. All of that stuff can be sold next spring because she never plays with any of it anymore. I’ll probably keep the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse and the Sesame Street toys, but the rest can all go buh bye.

I have two kids and a two bedroom condo. There are just toys everywhere. I have made laughable attempts to have their toys in their room but it just doesn't work that way. A playroom would be so luxurious- in the meantime I stumble over lego dinosaurs
