Yeah, I use TA, but I like personal recommendations, too.
I'll be in SF for my 40th birthday with DH and would love to find a fun/funky restaurant to hit up for my birthday. I like most cuisines, but not so much sushi. I love fun cocktail menus and funky decor.
I don't love fussy restaurants, molecular gastronomy or big huge tasting menus with weird foams and shit.
Got any ideas?

you could go for dessert at the toy boat cafe out in the inner richmond...super funky. It is more quiet than funky..but zazies in cole valley is one of our favs...small, homey, great french food...reachable by muni train (next to the haight) and it has a great patio..and there are some good bars around there.
just be sure you use SF, or san francisco or the city...locals hate san fran or frisco. yelp is used a lot by locals. the ferry building has some great places to eat..or the Waterfront . for real local and funky and a real "scene" you could go to Outerlands in the outer sunset. near the beach, on muni.

I asked my brother who lives in the city somewhere near ntsf and he said:
Try Padrecito at Cole and Carl (Cole Valley/Height) [I'm wondering if that is supposed to say Haight?? lg] for upscale Mexican. Great little Italian wine bar with appetizers etc called Inovino across the street on Carl. Or any of a number of hip places on Valencia St in the nice part of the Mission. Locando is an Italian restaurant there. Quite good. Good place for tequila across the street at Puerto Allegre. Also, La Ciccia at Church and 30th St in Noe Valley. Sardinian Italian. Very good.

Not a dinner place, but there's a cool bar called Bourbon & Branch in the Tenderloin. It's a speakeasy that requires a password to get in if you make a reservation (otherwise you have to go to the public bar).

Would love to. I'm partial to 4th St, but I could be talked into crossing the bridge. 4th street? Our hotel is at Market & 4th. The Hotel Palomar? I picked it because they will bring you a companion goldfish to your room during your stay. That just tickled me!

This sounds perfect. When I travel, I love to check out neighborhoods and local stuff. I don't really get down with the chain/super touristy thing (but I will visit touristy sites). I'd rather commit seppuku than eat at someplace like a Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. when I'm traveling. My exception was McDonald's in China. Man, I just needed a Diet Coke with ice. I'm really excited to visit Alcatraz, since neither DH nor I have gotten to do it when we've been in SF before (separately). Mostly I'm jazzed to see that Ai Weiwei exhibit "@large." If you live in the area, consider checking it out! Ai Weiwei - @large

Great central location for the entire East Bay and anyone coming from the city. Your hotel sounds charming!
