There is no benefit to saddling a child with a crazy name that will draw ridicule, that the child will have to spend their life spelling and explaining. There's a reason John and Mary and Thomas and Katherine have been in the top names for hundreds of years. And then you give your beloved younger daughter the classic, time-honored name of Margaret, planning to call her Maggie as it fits with your family's Scots-Irish heritage, and the older one re-christens her "Gart." And thus she is called ever after. 😂 My sister’s first name is Carla, but as a two year old I couldn’t pronounce it and called her “caca.” Yeah, mom started to call her by her middle name real quick after that.

Add me to the list of peas with a brother named Scott. There were two more in my neighborhood, as well.
One of my sons also had a best friend named Scott when he was school-age.
But I agree it hasn't been used often, at least in my area, in the past 30 years or so. There were more Scotts in SoCal in the 60s & 70s than in the Midwest in the 90s-2018.

My brother's name is Scott, too. There are enough of us to have a club!

DS is 11... he had a kid in his split class (year younger) named scott.
DD went to daycare with a precious monet. i gather monet was not her middle name... her first name was precious monet. she would be about 16 now so her mom named her BEFORE that movie came out. i wonder if mom is still spitting out that mouthful?
i was pregnant the same time as britney spears. i was deciding between traditional name and a more unusual irish name. i specifically chose traditional name for first name and delegated more uncommon name to middle name because my boy was born a week or so before HER baby. i thought, if he has a "normal" name, no one will say anything but if i pick more unusual name and brit brit uses same name, people will forever ask me if i named my baby after britney spears son.
(note... son is now 13... does anyone actually know britney spear's son's name?? i blame it on crazy hormones! lol! naming babies is not for the faint of heart! and her son was named sean preston... not a contender for DS at all)

Courtesy of my brother, who thinks he’s funnier than he really is.

When she gets fed up of calling him by all three names, which she will at some point, will she then call him S-S-S or Ssssss? I don’t have a problem with the names particularly but it’s one of those things that the more experienced of us will raise an eyebrow and think “she will learn.” Is this how you get the nickname ‘squiggy’? I’m sorry but that’s right over my head!

This makes me think of those Luvs diaper commercials where they show first time parents fighting over how to bathe the baby and boiling pacifiers; then by the second kid they’re shoving the baby in the shower with dad and wiping the pacifier on their pants.
I’m guessing Squire Sebastian Senator’s mother will get lazy and name the next kid “Ed.”

Earl is a very popular name down South.
I wish people understood that you can disagree with what they say or say what you’re saying/doing is stupid without it being a personal attack. Nobody is ridiculing the baby. They’re ridiculing her stupid idea of what ridiculous name she’s saddling that kid with.

Haha! My brother's name is Scott. And I know a few others, but then we are older than you and it was more poplular when I was young. I have had several students named Scott over my forty years in teaching, though. I am 43 and I have a good friend named Scott. I'm just saying my kids reaction was like Scott? No one names their kid Scott. It was quite funny. My stepdaughters are expecting a new baby brother and the name that is under consideration is Colton. The little boy I adopted was named Colton and we kept it. I also have his brother who is named Freedom, we are changing it to Jamie when it’s finalized

like she can control nicknames given to kids by their schoolmates! He will have one the first day of school, and all his teachers will be referring to him as squire, since they will not want to take the time to say the whole name....

Is this how you get the nickname ‘squiggy’? I’m sorry but that’s right over my head! It is from a popular American t.v. show - Laverne and Shirley. (Which was a spin-off from Happy Days). One of the male leads was called “Squiggy.”

Name your kid whatever you want, but "Squire Sebastian Senator" ONLY HIS FIRST NAME, NO NICKNAMES?

Would make an interesting name in mathematical notation. Like Prince’s symbol.

I gave all my girls two first names, and always call them by both. The two younger ones still get called by their full proper names at school. The two older ones say they gave up trying to get people to call them by both; my eldest still uses both of her names, DD2 has chosen to use only her first half of her name. All say they love their names and know I’m never going to call them anything else, just the older two are tired of trying to correct people. I assumed when I named them that when they were old enough they could choose which, or both, they want to be called.

I have 5 kids from 18-8 and no one knows a Scott. We just discussed this at dinner a few weeks ago. So if you really want to be original...choose Scott. Almost everyone I know IRL my age (late 40s) has either a brother or a husband named Scott - myself included. But yes - I don't know anyone much younger than us (or much older than us) with the name - it was definitely an early 70s name
