So, my mother has decided she wants walking poles for when she goes out walking. She is getting older and worries a bit about her balance. will these really help her? If so, anyone have any suggestions or info about them? I am assuming REI would be a good place to shop?

they are super helpful.. and rei has a good selection. have her look at a video into how to hold strap properly .. hand goes up and graps grip and strap.. if you can go to a store, they will adjust them for her. having three points on the ground at any time is really really good. having two poles helps you stand up right and better posture. often, they can be folded down to travel with etc.

As my dad’s Parkinson’s progressed, I bought poles for him, first one, then another. Wal Mart, under twenty each. Adjustable, lightweight, and telescoping. I don’t know if they still carry them, but they were a great way to give him support before a walker.

For areas where telescoping batons would get you arrested.

Thanks for the info, she is really hard to shop for, so I think I will get her an REI gift certificate and go shopping with her.

Yes, walking sticks are great, esp for people that aren't quite ready for the cane or walker stage. Just make sure they are the proper ht.

DH has a pair he got at REI. They really help -- he has foot drop and lousy balance. He was just using them this morning when we walked the dog on the rail trail.
