I brought an XBOX 360 into the Microsoft Store because it had the "red ring". I had an appt for them to do a diagnostic. When I walked in the check in person was beyond obnoxious. He said "oh, that's really old, there's nothing we can do." I said "I wish someone would have said that when I made the appt. so I didn't have to lug it over here during the holidays." I also said "It feels like we've only had it for 3-4 years". Mr. Uppity: "Not possible, we stopped making them a long time before that. It's time for a new one."
I asked to keep my appt. and see if anyone could tell me what we might be able to do. The person who looked at it was nice, but he said there was nothing to do since it won't power on. I asked if we could try a different power supply. He said, "we don't have them anymore for this box." I asked if he could look up the purchase date. The manufacture date was late 2013 and the purchase date was Oct. 2014. I KNEW we hadn't had it for "6-7 years".
And even if we did. Is it so laughable that a device should be able to last *GASP* SIX OR SEVEN YEARS!?!??!?! Goodness.
As it was, we only had it 4 years, kept it in great condition (even the tech said it looked new) and still it died w/no warning - we noticed when we went to play on it at Thanksgiving.
Anyway, I HATE that we manufacture landfill filler and that companies think that a 4 yo machine is "so old".
What a waste and a way to treat the world's limited resources.
I am never buying an XBOX again.

I validate you.
I hate that every thing is designed to be disposable. It always comes down to the greed of the company.
My grandparents kept their refrigerator for 45 years, then handed it down to my mom and it lasted another eleven.
Compare that to our last two washers. Right around the five year mark, they die. Brought in a repair guy who told us it would be cheaper to replace because the parts are "too old" and will be expensive.
I'm just so tired of cheap crap being made instead of quality items that can last a lifetime.
You know, larger items used to be made to last decades of use. It's why you could justify such a huge expense. Because you wouldn't have to do it again in a few years. You were pretty set.

I think that some tech people see things that are a year old as outdated. Time can easily get exaggerated. Doesn't help your issue, but I know that my kid is like that with most of the technology he sees.

I hear ya. I want to know why every single iPhone in this household has died or started playing up at around the 20 month mark - just before the 2 year free upgrade comes into play. I have had better luck with my Samsungs fortunately.
And don't even get me started on the big appliances that start to go wonky just after the 5 year warranty expires.

In some ways, I think we have ourselves to blame. So many people want the latest and greatest of everything. Appliances, furniture, everything is soooo "dated" within a few years. I have watched numerous HGTV shows where the potential homeowner walks into a perfectly nice home, but are all "ewwww, I would have to GUT this kitchen before I can even move in!" And it's not because it's old and gross, it because, gasp, horror of horrors, the cabinets are oak, and the appliances are white.
We have become a throw away society. I too remember my parents having the same refrigerator throughout my entire childhood and on into college. My husband and I have been married for 32 years, and we have had something like 6 refrigerators. Not because we got tired of the style, but because they broke. Another problem is that it is so expensive to fix things that it is often cheaper to just buy a new one.
It's too bad the prices of these big items don't reflect their "throw away" status.

Google Xbox red ring of death, there are some tricks to get it working again (sometimes). Also if you are looking for a new power cord to attempt powering up, check game stop and game exchange (if these are local to you).

Completely agree, OP. I have an internal rant with myself on a weekly basis about how I loathe planned obsolescence and not just the money, but the TIME wasted on maintaining and replacing everyday items.
My 17 year old thinks I am such a square (and, a cheapskate) because I don’t love bringing new products and technology into the home that isn’t necessary. It’s not that I don’t like new toys, it is that I get so angry that we spend our hard earned money and precious time constantly repairing or replacing them. ARGHHH!! Right now I have two Dyson vacuums sitting in my closet that I need to bring in for repair. Not to mention the Ninebot electric scooter that can only be repaired by sending it back to the company for repair. Lame!
I will say our kids have had their Nintendo 3DSs for a very long time and played the heck out of them. We got our money’s worth there, for sure.

Unfortunately, it seems every gaming device company plays this "device obsolete" game after a few years. Partly it is because they are improving the technology that fast, but partly I'm sure its a money grab too. I agree with the annoyance over considering them landfill material after a only few years, and the general "these are disposable" attitude a lot of these companies have.

I stream Netflix through my DVD-BlueRay player. I just had to replace both of them because the old ones (a couple of years old) won't work after Dec 31. Electronics should last a few years before they are obsolete. Luckily electronics have gotten a lot cheaper lately.

Yeah, our TV is *GASP* 7 years old!! And of course, they already removed the Amazon app from it a while ago - taking away something that you bought the TV to do AFTER you buy it. There should be a law. You sell a TV w/a certain set of features, those features should be available as long as the TV is working.
Luckily, AppleTV put an Amazon app on their service. But yeah, it really sucks that you don't buy something anymore with the expectation that it will last for a long time AND that they won't take features away from you while you're using them.
