I've seen it mentioned a couple of times. Does the groom get his own cake?

It's usually a chocolate cake decorated to reflect the groom's interest. Most wedding cakes are usually White. This gives people a choice.

I didn't realize they aren't popular all over but apparently they are more popular in the south. It is a secondary cake that is usually more informal compared to the wedding cake. Traditionally they are chocolate with strawberries (or other fruit on top). My husband's was chocolate with chocolate shavings on top because he doesn't like strawberries. It is also very popular for them to be themed based on the groom's hobbies or sports teams.
Remember the armadillo cake in "Steel Magnolias"? That was the groom's cake.

Our grooms cake was chocolate in the shape of an Xbox (complete with brownie controller with m&m buttons and licorice string "cord".

And their cake flavors were chocolate mousse, raspberry truffle, and orange creamsicle.

XH had a grooms cake at our wedding in ‘96. It happened to be chocolate, because that’s his favorite. It was a snowmobile, and we served it at the rehearsal dinner, not the reception.

I have always heard of them (for some reason we didn't do one) but never heard they were traditionally chocolate. I always thought it was a flavor that the groom liked other than white. Funny my DH favorite flavor is white, he was so excited to have a white cake on "stilts". HAHA.. think 80s early 90s.. layers, stairs, columns.

It's not a thing here. I thought the armadillo cake in Steel Magnolias was just a joke. Animal shape, red velvet = butchering. Now I'm thinking it's been way too long since I've seen that movie, it's so good.

DH had a carrot cake with cream cheese frosting for his groom's cake, because that's literally the only kind of cake he likes. No fancy shape - just a smaller cake with a different flavor.

Originally the groom's cake was the favor, not part of the desserts at the wedding. It was sliced and boxed, then guests took it home. Tradition was that single women would put that box of cake under their pillow and hopefully dream of their future groom, which is how it got the name groom's cake. They've long been popular in the South. I had one at my wedding in 1977 and no one in that small town in KY knew what the heck it was...but they were all happy to take a slice of cake home! Now they have really evolved into elaborate cakes that showcase the groom's interest. There have been replicas of some of the Texas universities football stadiums. Just do a search for "grooms cake" on Pinterest! I think that they became more popular after the movie Steel Magnolias came out.

We had groom’s cookies at our wedding because of the tradition of taking it home, we knew taking home cake would be a hassle. We also had chocolate wedding cake, I don’t think most people still have white cake do they? With all the crazy flavors available?
I don’t think they are actually that popular in the PNW, I definitely think it is a regional thing.

I'll be honest though I have never seen a wedding cake with chocolate cake inside (admittedly, I haven't gone to a lot of weddings recently)...I've mostly seen white cake with different filling flavors.

We didn’t have one, but we’ve been married almost 30 years and we live up north where it wasn’t a thing back then. My niece had one at her wedding though. They’ve been married almost nine years now.

Oh, that makes sense. I think in the weddings I have been to, cakes have been half white, half fun flavors. More than half have different flavored layers as well.

Popular in the south ~ DH's had a golf theme. The plastic *topper* showed a golfer on his hands and knees trying to blow the golf ball into the cup. It was adorable!

The blue Air Force logo was on the white frosting of my son-in-law's groom's cake.

I thought everyone had grooms cakes but then, I AM from the south! I've done over 50 weddings in the past, either as the photographer or cake decorator or both! I didn't know it was "supposed" to be chocolate, just a the grooms favorite flavor and a shape or scene that, as someone said, reflects his interests.

I didn't realize not everyone knew what a groom's cake was, learn something everyday Our SIL's cake was in the shape of a tool box with the logo of the brand of tools he uses (he's a large equipment mechanic). The flavor was strawberry because that's his favorite kind of cake.

I only know what it is from Steel Magnolias. I've never seen one at a wedding in real life.

I had no knowledge of a groom's cake until that movie. I still have never been to a wedding that had one.

I did my brother’s when he got married. Red Velvet, which was his favorite, and a more masculine design in black, white, and red.

Thank you for all replies. Looks like it's very popular in done areas and not in others.

I'm pretty sure my cake decorator included the groom's cake in the price of the cake. The photographer told exH and his best man that the tradition was for them to feed each other the groom's cake, and they went for it (though they really just tossed the cake at each other).
