I didn't want to high jack the other thread, but after reading it, I am interested in getting one.
I do not know where to begin. My current mixer is an Oster from the 1980s, glass bowl. I was thinking of a 6qt, but not sure where to start and where to start looking. Any help/ideas would be appreciated!! Thank you, Cynthia

I would recommend that you take a five or 6 quart I personally owned a 5 quart bowl lift and I really like it , I would not recommend the glass bowl it’s very pretty but it’s extremely heavy when it’s full .

Well what do you want to use it for?
I have a 5 qrt tilt head qnd 6 qrt bowl lift pro.
I have had the 5 qrt for almost 17 years and it works great. I got the 6 qrt pro to make gf bread dough and for larger batches.
Both the artisan tilt head and pro bowl lift are the 2 best mixers on the market with the bowl lift every so slightly better than the tilt head.
I would look at what you plan to use it for, see if you have space for the bowl lift and go from there.

Also the 6 qrt bowl lift pro with a higher watt is available at Costco for a dang good price. Stick with the metal bowl.

I don’t get the glass bowl appeal at all, so I would stick with metal. First off the glass bowls have broken on at least 3 cooking shows I have watched, second the weight would be more then I would like. I say get the best motor you can, I killed the first KA I had because I like to make bread and the motor burned out, If you want it to store under your counter measure to make sure it fits, I have a lift bowl and I much prefer that to the old tilt head I had. Also, get a color you love! I have the imperial grey, the bumpy one, and I love it. It is one that will match everything and that I will never get tired of and I really like grey, but if I had an extra one I would get orange or lime green. Don’t settle on color, my original one was white because it was cheap, but I am glad when I got my second one I waited and got the grey one I had originally wanted.

Costco has the 6 qt bowl lift for $269 until 12/24. Amazon had the same one for $209 for one day back at the beginning of November but I haven’t seen it that low since. I caved and bought mine the week before Thanksgiving at Costco when they had them on promo for $249, glad I snagged it when I did!
The 6 qt is really nice for making bread dough or double batches of cookies. Stuff like that pushed my 4.5 qt right to the limit.

I have a Pro 600 Lift with metal bowl. I love this thing. For real. Mine is white, which isn't my favorite color(I wanted grey) but this was a gift from DH so I will keep it. The machine itself is amazing. It does everything I need.
The only con is that it is heavy. My kitchen has limited counter space so Have to carry it from my Butlers Pantry to my counter when I want to use it. Otherwise, I love it.

That is exactly what I have and I couldn't agree more. When that glass bowl is loaded with batter, it's so heavy for me. I keep meaning to get a metal bowl.

Check QVC too, they often have good deals. I only use mine a few times a year and it’s nice to have for the times I need it.

This is me almost word for word-we even have the same color and want the same color! I bought mine years ago at Kohl's (due to a Pea alert). I think I paid around $300 with discounts and I got $90 in Kohl's cash too.

I got a 6qt pro (bowl lift) refurbished for a very good price several years ago - I believe Squillen turned me on to the deal. It's a silver/grey color and stays on my counter. I set it on a clear cutting "board" (plastic mat) to make it easier to move around on the counter, but I like that I don't have to move it from under the cabinets to use it like I would with a tilt head. It's an incredible workhorse, and I love all the different attachments - I have the grater, meat grinder and grain mill.

I've had a 5 qt tilt head (in white) for about 15 years. I just decided to upgrade this month and got a 6 qt bowl lift (in grey).
I originally got the 5 qt at a Black Friday sale for a really good deal at the time. I've used it at least monthly since then and it's still going strong. The 2 reasons I decided to upgrade are - I wanted a new color (grey is my favorite color) and I wanted to go a bit bigger in the bowl. The 5 qt was just a touch too small for making double batches - I actually overflowed my 5 qt mixer making a double batch of cheesecake earlier this year. The 6 qt is just right. I also got it at a great price from QVC with free shipping and a few bonus accessories (pour shield, scraping paddle).
I have limited counter space in my kitchen so I have a small kitchen island/trolley that my mixer lives on, it gets tucked away when I'm not using it but I don't have to carry it. The 6 qt is heavy!
I'm saving my old 5 qt to give to my mom for Mothers Day as part of a gift basket.
I also bought a 5 qt bowl lift from Target on Black Friday this year that I'm saving for my nieces graduation gift in June. She's going to culinary school and dropped some major hints about wanting a mixer of her own. I got that one for less than $200 with the sale and red card discounts!

Giving it a try tomorrow for a stir fry.

I have the 5 quart, but occasionally flour flies out. I'd like to upgrade to the 6 quart.

I have the 6 quart and it’s awesome. Mine lives on my counter all the time and my counter space is very limited.

Thank you so much everyone! I would be using it for cookies and cakes. I am not that great at making bread. Thanks also for the heads up about the glass bowl. Really appreciate the help! Cynthia

I disagree about the glass bowl.
I make bread almost every week, sometimes twice a week. I love being able to mix in my bowl and then put the lid on it for the bread to rise.
I have 3 bowls, 2 metal, 1 glass. You can't go wrong either way.
I would make sure that I got a KA with the metal gears. My has the plastic gears and they have made a noise since I got it. I also have trouble with the pivot pin working it's way out while the mixer is running, so if you have the cabinet height, I'd get the one where the bowl hooks in.
Whatever you decide to get, make sure you have plenty of room to keep it on the counter. Once I made room for mine to stay out permanently, I went from using it once a month to using it 5 or 6 times a week.
Also, be sure and get one of the beaters with the rubber edge so the bowl gets scraped as it mixes. I think mine is not a KA brand, but it does a great job and I'm not having to stop and scrape down the bowl at all while I'm mixing something.

Bumping this because I just got a Costco email and the 6 qt bowl lift is still on promo for $249 through Monday, so snag one there for a great price! They have them in red, black or silver and this one comes with the metal bowl.
