I saw something similar once at TJ's, although the bill was in the $20's. The person checking out realized that they didn't have their debit card with them or enough cash and the cashier just paid the bill herself and said for the person to pay it forward. I wrote to TJ's to acknowledge this act of kindness and they would share it with the store manager. I hope they also recognized the cashier in some way as well.

What a wonderful story! I'm so glad he got the recognition he so deserved and now has the money to attend college.

It is wonderful when such an act of kindness is acknowledged and just not to this extent but this is truly amazing I wish him all the best for his future.
