We just aren't particularly tech savvy. Could we get a Hulu subscription or a Netflix subscription and watch on the smart TV? We haven't ever gotten a subscription to either of them because I always thought we would have to watch on our computer and I just don't want to sit in the front of the computer to watch shows after I've been working in front of one all day. So tell me what all this new TV can do.

I don't have one (yet), but yes you can do netflix or hulu. One of the best things about them.

I do both or those on mine, plus Amazon.
(ETA: and a bunch of others, obviously, but those three are the main ones we use.)

Would we get enough shows with those to cancel our Uverse service? My husband likes all the stuff like history channel, myth busters, etc. I like bad reality TV -- Housewives, TeenMom, Project Runway, the body painting show (can't think of the name) and Little One likes Nick Jr., PBS and Nick.

We have a smart tv and I watch both Netflix and amazon video stuff on it. I have no experience with Hulu. Netflix has a lot of programs as well as the Netflix kids option though I never click on that unless we have grand kids visiting.
I think the body painting show you are referring to is Skin Wars. It comes on GSN. I don't know if that is an option on Hulu or Hulu Plus.
You can also purchase a Roku box for the other tv's in your home to stream Netflix or Hulu or Amazon.

I think it really depends on your TV watching habits as to whether you could get rid of your uVerse. Sounds like you might miss it. What I would do is try Netflix and Hulu for a month or so (they usually give free trials anyway), and see how much you are still going back to uVerse.

You're apparently way ahead of me because this is the first I have even heard of a "Smart TV".

The only reason I have even used one at all is because my parents finally upgraded from the early 1980 something Zenith TV they had and got one. I am not even kidding. They still had their EARLY 1980's Zenith. Anyway, they can watch netflix, hulu, amazon, you tube, etc on there. Gives my dad bells and whistles to play with now that he is retired.

We got rid of our dish when we got a roku player with Hulu and Netflix. But we watch mostly NBC, CBS, ABC, and FOX. With the list of shows you like, I would say no, you wouldn't be happy getting rid of Uverse. Netflix has some TLC programs, but not all. It also has some Nick Jr and PBS, but again, not all. Also, Netflix doesn't have the current TV. They usually don't get it until at least the next season. Hulu does have the current episodes (they have them the day after they air), but they don't have most of the cable stuff. Or CBS. (We hook our computer up to our TV to watch CBS stuff, because CBS does put their shows on their website.) I would suggest keeping the Uverse for now, but signing up for the free trials of Netflix and Hulu to see if they have enough of the shows you like to cancel Uverse.

Yep! We got one as a gift from my parents last month. I love that I can watch amazon prime through it! If we still had Netflix I could steam that through there as well. So much easier than having to go through the Wii or the Apple TV.

Since it still works, I am trying to remember that we really shouldn't replace just for the latest and greatest. One of my biggest reasons is not having to go through the Wii to watch Amazon prime. The Wii is so slow, at least for me. Sometimes I put stuff on the laptop just to avoid it.

We have a wii and a bluray that played netflix but I moved to the roku box and love it.

Check the websites for programming to see what would be available, although as mentioned, the paid services do offer 30-day free trials. You would probably get the Smithsonian channel (I get that free on Roku) and they have some pretty good programming (again, check the website to see what they offer.) PBS is another offering (although that comes with basic TV as well.) Also check the extended programming in your area. When the changeover was made a few years ago, one basic station now offers at least two if not 4 or more programming channels (channel 4, channel 4.1, 4.2, etc.) TV Guide basic listings When you have cable, you won't necessarily see those extended options.

The problem is, DSO's precious TV is so old, it doesn't have a HDMI hookup. The one in the master bedroom does, but we rarely watch TV in there. I'm hoping she will relent after the new year and let me get rid of the old, HUGE, ancient TV in the living room.

You're apparently way ahead of me because this is the first I have even heard of a "Smart TV". We didn't really know it was an option. We were just replacing a TV that died and the one we got was a smart TV. It's not like we went out looking for one on purpose! LOL I talked to DH about trying Netflix or Hulu and he pretty much nixed it. He thinks it is only for watching movies and we are not movie watchers at all. Oh well, I'm sure I will live without them. I really should be out exercising any way instead of trying to watch more TV! LOL

IS there a way to watch NFL (current season) on Netflix, Hulu, etc? We pay so much for DirecTv, but we'd like to get something cheaper. Football, however, is a must.

You might be able to pay for games to stream through a roku or something (I don't watch NFL any longer so not 100%) but Netflix and Hulu don't have them.
