I attempted to search on the board, but that was not helpful. Any suggestions? I was reading reviews on Target and Amazon, but good grief.
Thanks in advance!

If you’re looking for one with special sounds, it’s not for you. But for a basic, works very well to disguise other noises sound machine is the one we use. My counselor’s offices use it in the hallway as well for more privacy.

I have Google Home. I just tell it 'goodnight' and it tells me tomorrow's agenda, turns off my lights, and starts playing nature sounds.

I bought this one www.amazon.com/gp/product/B016Z9BB2A/ref=oh_aui_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1 in 2016. It has a nice range of sounds and time settings and it’s small size was good because I have a small night stand. I only stopped using it because I now use my Amazon Echo Show as sleep machine and an alarm clock. I still have the Sound+Sleep mini because it has both AC and battery power. It’s very light weight, so it can be used for travel.

What do you want to use it for?
I used to use a sound machine on my nightstand - I sleep much better to rain sounds and/or white noise. Now I use my Echo Show - I simply say “Alexa, play heavy rain sounds.” And then “Alexa, loop mode.” And it plays rain sounds all night until I tell it to “stop.” There are a variety of free sounds you can ask it to play.
When I travel, I use my iPad as my sound machine. My favorite app is called “Relax Melodies” which allows you to mix your own custom sound, choosing from 50+ sounds/elements.

I recently bought this one to use while we are traveling this winter. We all sleep with fans in our rooms at home and needed something in our hotel rooms. My perfect white noise was the old window air conditioner in our first house, but not exactly practical or portable now. This comes pretty close and I like that you can adjust the sound a bit too. BBB had the best price I could find when I used their coupon.

The only ones I have ever owned are by Marpac. They will last forever! I still have the original ones I bought 20 years ago.

I have a very basic sound machine that sits on my nightstand I can put batteries in for travel & I recently bought Bose noise canceling ear buds that are just for sleep. They are called Bose noise canceling sleep ear buds. They only play the same sort of sounds that a sound machine do, no music at all. There are new sounds that can be downloaded later on as well as the ones that are already on there. It took me a bit to get used to them & now I love them. This is the first trip I’ve been on with them & I’ve not heard all the loud hotel noise that I usually encounter.
I could be addicted to these! delila

We have one that we LOVE but don't use it anymore. Why? Two reasons. First, there is a free app called "Rain Rain" that is AMAZING. I use that now. It travels with my phone, and I always have it. Second, we purchased two sets of Bose Sleepbuds--one for our daughter in medical school and one for hubby. They both LOVE them. I mean LOVE, LOVE, LOVE them. Worth every penny. So, no more machines next to the bed. Just my app and hubby/daughter's earbuds.

We have a Homedics Sound Spa. It works well. Is portable if we want to take it on vacation. I also have the White Noise app on my phone. It has a variety of noises but also has "breaks" where the sound restarts which I notice if I am having problems sleeping.

Thank you for all the replies. I actually need two, I had considered using Alexa, but ours seems to shut off when I leave her home with the dog to play music? It's weird. I'm not sure I trust her to stay quiet while we sleep. Looks like I'll narrow it down from all of your suggestions. Thank you again so much.

There are apps that work great! I currently use one that uses "brown noise" vs white noise. It's fantastic!

For travel we use these, from BB&B: linky
They're small (but mighty) and the batteries last a while, even keeping them on all night. I do take the batteries out for actual traveling, though, because the buttons are sensitive and the unit has turned on in my suitcase!

There is also a more midrange pink noise too. Who knew? I run a fan at night in the summer and a humidifier with a fan in the winter, the end result is about the same. We don’t like having any electronics (phones or screens) in the bedrooms while we’re sleeping so that wouldn’t be a viable answer for me. After I saw my friend’s machine I looked it up on Amazon and couldn’t believe how expensive they are! Guess I’ll just stick with my fan and humidifier, LOL.

The one we have and love is $29.99 with a 5% coupon right now on amazon. It works great though hubby now uses his Bose sleepbuds, and I use the app only because the sound machine is on his side of the bed. LOL! www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01LYOVXB6/ref=oh_aui_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

My sis got me a Homedics clock/alarm/radio with sound. It also displays the clock onto the ceiling if you'd rather see that than the brightness of the clock....... I love it. I constantly have it set on the ocean sound (reminds me of NY). It's soothing, but it doesn't help me sleep; just relax.

I’ve never tried any of these while sleeping but I feel like I would have to get up and pee 20 times with all the water/rain sounds.
