I haven't been sleeping too well with my Temazepam (antidepressant also used for sleeping). I have no depression. Just saw my primary doc and she is switching me to Trazadone. Just wanted to check with the Peas to hear their feedback on how effective it might be for sleeping. Any side effects? I believe it's also an anti-depressant that could be used for sleep issues. I'll read up on it. TIA. I didn't want to begin a new Rx that might have bad side effects and figured the Peas would know!!

I have been taking a low dose for about three months thanks to severe sleep issues. It doesn't help me fall asleep (it's not supposed to, so don't expect it) but it seems to help me stay asleep. I only take a half pill per night during the week, but a whole one on weekend nights. I get really groggy the next day if I take a whole pill and don't sleep at least 8 hours.
It does absolutely nothing for depression in my case.
I haven't found any side effects other than the grogginess if I don't get the full amount of sleep on it.

DH took 50mg for 11 years. He just bumped up to 100mg. He does not have depression, just trouble sleeping.
It helps him stay asleep. He's had no side effects at all.
I hope it works for you.

I've been taking it for years, as in 10 or more. Works well for me other than for a period of time this fall when other meds were messing terribly with my sleep. it's all resolved now. There are a bunch of threads here about it, this should take you too them. If you search elsewhere, just a fyi, it's spelled TrazOdone. 2peasrefugees.boards.net/board/2/nsbr-resurrected?q=Trazodo

I took it a couple of times (6-month periods) when I had problems with waking up in the middle of the night, and then not being able to go back to sleep. It really helped, did not make me groggy in the morning.

It worked well for sleep for me. I slept for about 3 days on it. Lots of people have great success on it.

I’ve been taking it for years with no adverse side effects. My dr had me start with 50 mg for three days to test how that worked. Then if that didn’t work add in another 50 and test for three days. 100mg was initially my magic number. That worked well for about 5 years and then I bumped it up to 150. A good friend has been on it longer than me and she takes 250 mg.
For me it does help me fall asleep and stay asleep. I take and am out in about 10-15 minutes.

I've been on it for years. It's worked extremely well for me. I can fall asleep but I can't stay asleep. This has solved that problem nicely. With Trazodone once I take it at night I can get a full 8 hours sleep only waking once to go to the bathroom. I've never had any side effects from it.

I’d taken this for a few years (50mg) then took Temazapam for over 3 years and my new psychiatrist put me back on trazadone (100mg). I like it better than temazapam because I don’t wake up groggy. Hopefully we’ve helped you.

Thanks so much for all of the info. I have no problem getting to sleep; it's staying asleep that's been an issue since peri-menopause. This should work if I do plan on getting at least 7 hours or so. Thanks so much.
I read the possible side effects and they're scary! Hope none of that happens...... Mine is 50 mg.
Thanks, Peas. As usual, you're so helpful & thank you, michym, for that link!

My Dr prescribed it hoping to help w/sleep issues. Unfortunately, my sleeplessness was worse taking the medication. I would take the pill and be wide away for many hours.
I started taking Hydroxozine(sp?) again which is a Godsend. It's an antihistamine which has been found to help with anxiety and sleep issues. It usually knocks me out within 10-15 minutes. Not habit forming, so I can take for X amount of time, but quit for days or weeks without issues.

Let’s put it this way. When I take it, I can function the next day. When I don’t, I can’t.

I'll take note of the Hydroxozine and look it up in case this doesn't work out.......... If it's otc, it probably won't work on me. I'm pretty drug-resistant!
Dixie Lou: I want to have your doctor!!!!!!!!!! I was on ambien (5 mg for a few year, then 10 mg), but they won't let me have it anymore because they think there's a time limit on how many years you could use it. I've never abused it and it's been about 10 years since I had it, but it did the trick!!!!!!!!! I can't imagine using both--but it sounds amazing! Thanks!
Hope to sleep well tonight! Thanks, Peas!

I couldn't take it, but then again I can't tolerate any antidepressants. I'm not depressed, but pain management dr prescribed them for pain in the beginning. I think I tried about 4 of them- felt like a zombie the next day. Then he gave me Trazodone for sleep- again I took half of the lowest dosage. It was one of those weird sleeps where you're not sure if you've slept but you did because time passed. And the dreams were so vivid and crazy. I think I tried it for 2 nights and said no more. Hope it works for you.

My dh takes it along with Ambien and has no issues.
I took it many years ago, during a particularly difficult time in my life, and had the most bizarre and somewhat disturbing dreams. I’m not sure it was the Trazodone but I assumed it was.

I’ve been taking Trazadone for years for sleep, not for depression. I can fall asleep but I wasn’t able to stay asleep. At first I was on 50 mgs & recently my neurologist bumped it up to 150 mgs. I break that in quarters & take 75 mgs. If I am really tired I will take 150 mgs & sleep very well with no side effects in the morning at all.
