Where the heck do you get them? The ones I see in stores are either generic plastic or terra-cotta or they are beautiful and ridiculously expensive.

What are you looking for? I tend to go pretty neutral in color with lots of different textures, so most of mine are from IKEA, Home Depot, and World Market.

I've been loving Home Depot lately. Check out more than one because some are better than others.
I also have gotten some at Lowes and although seasonal TJ Maxx has some nice stuff.

Wal-Mart is starting to stock spring/gardening stuff. I have found some nice ceramic pots there in the past.

Try thrift stores. Church rummage sales. Garage sales. I resorted to checking thrift stores and found some AMAZING pots! Prior to the thrift stores, I checked Target, Home Goods and Fred Meyer/Kroger and they didn't have anything at all.

I see some options online, but I rarely see cool pots in person. I live in Chicago, so we have no shortage of stores. On a separate note, why are pots so expensive?

I get mine sometimes at local garden store end of season sales. IKEA has had some good modern ones with clean lines. I've also gone with using baskets with plastic liners designed for plants because I like the texture and the cost. The last expensive planter I bought had a run-in with the hose (I move the plants outside for the summer) and lost, so I just refuse to spend a lot of money on planters unless I LOVE them.

I also checked Hobby Lobby and they didn't have anything either - pots or even a nice decorate basket to cover a plastic pot. I wonder if Nov/Dec isn't the ideal time to shop for plant pots? Maybe with spring coming up next, more plant pots will be available?

Maybe with spring coming up next, more plant pots will be available? Definitely true, but I had a really tough time finding good pots this spring/summer as well. I was actually just asking in general, not just for right now.

For a clean line, modern look Crate & Barrel or West Elm are where I would check first. West Elm's pots are on sale right now. HomeGoods has a good selection in right now, too.

I tend to use a generic pot that has good drainage and also a good saucer under it (or I buy a clear plastic one) if I am using it in the house... then I put that entire thing in something cute. I love metal buckets and olive buckets,so that is what I gravitate too -and there are tons of this stuff out there for cheap if you watch. For something that looks like this... I can find neat buckets at Target, Walmart and even dollar stores now.

I've never been a gardener or into gardening, that has always been dh's department But this year I grew my first tomato plant. I've been wanting him to do more veggies then flowers because he has a serious green thumb.
When I was out looking for containers I was kind of surprised at how expensive they were. Someone on FB mentioned using bathroom trash cans and drilling drainage holes in the bottom. I found a couple of those at the thrift store and hope they work this year. If not it was at least a cheap worth a try thing

Just a thought - Check your local Dollar Tree. They don't have ones like the example you posted but I got 2 that look like galvanized metal and they are in fact plastic. I couldn't tell the difference until I touched it. They also had it in a "copper" color and maybe black. I see if I can sleuth around and find a photo.
ETA: I can't find a photo but have one in the back of my car. I'll try to take a photo later. But they are black "metal" looking with outward dimples. Those dimples are rubbed off to give the metal color look underneath.

I prefer plain terracotta pots, so that's mostly what I use, but I've found some cute pots very reasonably priced at Big Lots if you have one in your area. The plain terracotta pots I usually pick up at Hobby Lobby or Michael's, they're very cheap and I've painted them or added glass/tile mosaics.
I've seen brightly colored "plain" pots at Hobby Lobby as well, they should be putting their spring stuff out now.

I get all my pots at estate sales. I buy mostly terracotta, but some are like the large $50ish ones if you buy them new. For some reason, I find if the pot is sitting outside or in the garage with dirt and a half dead plant in it, they will sell it for $2-5. I just clean them up til like new. This style I'm thinking Pier One? Even Michael's and Joanns sometimes have decent ones for indoors. Also consider using any container and drilling a hole in the bottom. But yes, brand new in stores, they are somewhat pricey.

I put my orchids and succulents in vintage tins. My ferns are in old enamel buckets. All thrift store acquired.

West Elm, sometimes Crate & Barrel, Etsy - yes they are overpriced. I try to only buy ones I love.

Go to a local nursery or greenhouse, they have nice pots of different sizes. Sometimes there will be a potter at a craft show and they have pots.

We decorated with hundreds of live plants for my daughter's wedding last fall. I collected pots for over a year and the best looking and best priced pots all came from TJ Maxx, Marshalls, and HomeGoods. HomeGoods had the best selection of the three with lots more choices in larger size pots but all three stores seemed to have a consistent supply arriving. I also ordered some pots from Hobby Lobby when I had coupons as well as keeping a look out everywhere else.

I asked my gardener mum & she says Big Lots & Walmart. It’s worth a try if you don’t find anything you really like anywhere else. Hopefully this might help you a bit.
