Just told my kids if they ever got into someone's face like that, I would kick their ass. They looked blankly at me so I replied, "apparently people need to state explicitly how to be a decent human and not jackasses" The video I watched showed Nathan Phillips walking up to the teen and the teen did not move.

Those are the "Black Muslims" intimidating those Catholic Boys??? They stood in one spot and people came up to then to listen to their Bat Shit Crazy Rantings. It was their right to free speech and anyone who didn't want to hear it could just walk away. They were crazy racists too. "Indian means Savage." Gross. And what about those men gives the school boys the right to harass the Native man?

The video I watched shows the Native Americans getting between the boys and the other group. He did not come up to the boy. He was moving through the crowd. The boy stood in front and wouldn't move. Several of the other boys started chanting and tomahawk chopping.

It was the yelling with the smirk that made this go viral. At any point the teens could have and should have walked away

That’s what I saw in the video directly above also. In the video above, well over an hour, Mr. Phillips confrontation occurs towards the end. Mr. Phillips walking up to the whole group of boys, maybe 50 of them, not just the one boy. The school group did not move. To me it didn’t seem he was trying to go past them; he was walking right up to the huge group.

We are from small town Midwest. Neither of my boys voted for Trump and certainly wouldn’t wear a MAGA hat, If they were on their DC trip and first were accosted by a group yelling at them and then had an old man come right up to them playing a drum I think they both would’ve thought it was some sort of joke or was just another oddball. They wouldn’t have thought “gosh, here is an elder here for the indigenous people march!” They would’ve thought “man, DC is crazy, first them yelling at us and acting crazy and now this old man is in my face banging a drum, this is nuts!” I have no respect for any of the adults here. The first group yelling, this group for getting right in the thick of the kids, and especially for any chaperones or school employees who let this happen. What if it had been a knife and not a drum? What if this had escalated? I think any school employees who were present should face consequences. The kids didn’t seek anyone out, they were sought out. Big difference.

What can white people do to help? Decenter whiteness. Examine white supremacy in action. Avoid defensiveness. Read widely, especially works by BIPOC (black and indigenous people of color). Read history books not written by white men. Examine our own biases and work to do better. Call out and challenge our own, especially our elected folks at all levels and spiritual leaders. If you’re interested in reading indigenous voices, here is a good start : Thank you so much for sharing this tweet. I've added a couple of these to my Kindle.

If your child would not recognize this man as an indigenous person, and instead thought him "just another oddball," perhaps you would do well to educate them more completely on the history of America and its native people. That is a disturbing comment.

Along the vein of "where were the adults/why didn't the adults move the young men along/etc.", why did the diocese of Covington send students from the Catholic boys' high school to the anti-choice march promoting taking control over women's bodies, yet not send young women from the Catholic girls' high school down the street?

If you're focusing more on the mechanics of what happened in this incident (who moved where and when) than the clearly toxic culture of this school and these young men, please take a moment to reflect.

This retweeted tweet has a good analysis of what happened by someone who watched the entire video.
ETA: I was trying to figure out how people could be defending these kids. Their narrative is that Philips approached them. He did, but this explains why. I am so f****** disappointed in this country right now.

The mechanics are important in order to fully understand what transpired, especially when this young man and his family are now getting death threats.

This is exactly what I was trying to explain in a group chat on Facebook. One person kept white washing it, glossing over the boys actions. Grrrr.....

I am just as disappointed in the jackasses that jump to death threats.

Yes, his comment was total BS, but hardly surprising. I think he might also be the teacher there who has (or had, since the school is locking down/deleting posts) a post about how, yes, boys will be boys and it's a real thing and it's quite all right.
I should have included the eye-rollie smilie. Or, actually, we need a "this is a sarcastic rhetorical question that we all know the answer to" smilie.

That said, I know there were people upthread (and elsewhere) with that sentiment (rather, who made comments to that effect).

No whataboutism from my end. If you're reading any into it, there's nothing I can do to prevent it. It was an additional comment on a PP being disappointed in people jumping to making death threats based upon a very small snippet of what transpired.
I think ALL parties share some responsibility - the Native American activists shouldn't be trying to engage kids in such an in-your-face manner, the Black Hebrew Israelites shouldn't be so nasty towards them (nor towards just about everyone who passed by them), and the kids shouldn't be allowed to be roaming around DC without adequate adult supervision during multiple marches/protests.
I can't remember if it was upthread here or elsewhere that someone was mentioning US Parks Police should have been around to help diffuse/prevent. Um, hello, there's a shutdown. They're probably furloughed or on reduced staff like the rest of us in federal government work. Not exactly the best time to not have full staffing if that is the case here.

But my upset at what I saw was such, that I actually felt that I could have slapped the smirk off that childs face - although I know myself and I wouldn't have. And I've never felt that way before, either. I guess I need to choose a better way to explain just how much something upset me, lol. Yikes.

Their actions are far from innocent. ***I did not think the NA were trying to engage.

Oh, I was pretty darned livid when I first saw it as well. But I wanted to find out what the context was before I got too righteous with my indignation. It took a bit of poking around and checking to see if things were doctored or reliable (most people are trust-but-verify but I am more never-trust-always-verify just because that's how I have to be in my job).
I'm just glad that all the encounters surrounding this did NOT end up in anything violent. Let's hope it continues that way.

I don’t have a specific thread so I’ll make up a situation: 17 year old minority that mugs a 50 year old white man vs a private schooled white 17 year old that bullies a Native American veteran. Does one deserve more grace than another? Should both have ruined futures? Are both the product of their upbringing? Wish I knew how do multiple quotes while on my phone- I wish we could hear from the chaperones. Why didn’t they stop this long before it got that far? I suspect they were sitting off to the side @@. And they were there to protest a women’s march? What the heck? Why can’t kids wear MAGA hats while on school field trips? Just because you disagree with the campaign slogan doesn’t mean it’s inappropriate for high school students. Honestly you could come up with all types of scenarios here - Brock Turner ring a bell??? Another privileged rich kid who thinks he can do whatever he wants and gets a slap on the wrist. Yes he should have a ruined future and deserves no grace. The Brock Turners turn into the Brett Kavanaughs - DISGUSTING
