It really bothers me that the newer cars have such bright headlights. At night, sometimes I can’t determine if they have their hi-beams on or not. If I flash my lights at them and they don’t have them on, I’m BLINDED when they flash theirs! It’s got to the point that I don’t flash anymore and just try to avoid looking at them. I look down at the line on the road on the right side until they pass me. It’s even worse when they’re behind you. I have to move all my mirrors down, rear-view and outside, just to be able to see. It’s getting to the point where I don’t want to drive after dark.

Yes, I agree. Apparently I have one of those cars with bright lights because I am constantly getting flashed for hi beams, when I don’t have them on. It is hard to see when they are coming at you and forget even trying to see if it’s raining. I too am constantly adjusting my mirrors so I can see in front of me. I told my husband I want a piece of that tinted window film to put on my side mirrors to help with the brightness.

But yes more & moremodern car lights are blinding. I literally had to stop the other day as I could not see. Some freaking purplish lights extremely bright & also probably adjust to be pointing too high.

One of my favorite things about my car is my automatic high beams. I drive a dark country road at night so I have to use them, and when I’d go 10- 20 minutes without seeing someone I often forgot my high beams were on until the coming car flashed me. Can’t wait until this is a regular feature on cars.

Hmmm. I haven’t noticed bright lights here. I wonder if it’s because we have streetlights everywhere or because my mirrors automatically adjust to high beams. In fact, I feel like people don’t use their lights enough. I was driving around this afternoon and it was a grey, wet, dark day. There were a lot of people who needed to turn their lights on!

It is probably the newer bulb technology. Newer cars use LED now, which are brighter than the old bulbs. Yeah, it is hard to tell now if cars do or do not have their high beams on.

This is one of my pet peeves. I hate it when an SUV is behind me and has their lights shining in my side mirrors. I really dislike driving at night now.

I could be wrong but I think it is because so many new cars are big SUVs or are 'up high off the ground' -- their headlights shine right into our line of site. I really don't like big cars, big SUVs, big trucks....

I believe it is the bulbs they are using now. The car manufacturers say they are making them safer, but they sure in heck are not safer for the other driver that they are blinding. Has been a hot topic here in Colorado Springs since whe have had major hail damage to thousands of cars over the last few years, therefore have a huge flux in new cars.

If I flash my lights at them and they don’t have them on, I’m BLINDED when they flash theirs! ] I totally agree, and I get it. I also drive a car with lights like that and I SINCERELY wish people would stop flashing their brights at me!. I KNOW they’re bright. They’re aimed correctly and there’s nothing I can do about it. So blinding me just means that now we BOTH can’t see. How is that safer? Lol It’s a problem from both sides.

They are awesome, turn on when there is no one coming, but man they turn off a good distance ahead when they spot lights coming.

One of my favorite things about my car is my automatic high beams. I never knew how much I loved the automatic high beams until I got them. Every car should have them. That and the heated seats are my two favorite features in my car.

I agree 100%! I tend to do whatever I need to do during the daytime when I can and avoid night time driving. However, it's not always a possibility. Basket1lady, I agree that when it's grey and cloudy, you should turn your lights on too and that many don't. The other day several didn't have them one and should have, but of those with them on, one still looked like they were driving with their brights on.

My problem is that I live in an urban areas, lights are everywhere. So a lot of times cars will forget to turn their lights on at all.

I love my automatic high beams, but sometimes I feel like they let me get too close to oncoming traffic and I don't want to blind them.
Just a warning: If you are used to automatic high beams and rent a car, not all rentals have them and in some states they love to pull you over for leaving them on. Jetlag, migraine and pitch black cabin area may have been to blame. The nice officer sent me on my way without a ticket.

I agree! If I am driving at night, particularly on a road that is not lit, I have a hard time seeing because of the brightness of the lights coming at me. Whoever is designing the cars needs to take that into consideration.

Totally agree. It is dark when I leave for work in the morning and I encounter a lot of cars with those super bright headlights. I don't flash my lights at them because I know those are just their regular lights. It's awful though. Most of the time when the car gets really close I wind up just closing my eyes or looking down for a second or two until they're gone. Not safe at all. I don't understand why car manufacturers are doing this these days.

I've noticed that even police cars that have someone pulled over on the side of the road have blinding flashing bright lights!

You all are making me feel better and I had dh read this because he was certain I am going blind due to my complaints about this. He is not bothered by this at all and says I must have a light sensitivity. I really hate it and it is very unsafe. I try to avoid driving in unfamiliar places in the dark. I live in the Seattle area and when you add in the rainy nights it gets even worse.

My husband has a Dodge Ram and people often think he has his high beams on and doesn't. He gets flashed a lot. . I wonder is vehicles higher off the ground make a difference or if manufacturers are putting in stronger bulbs.

What cars have automatic high beam safety? I haven’t seen that feature as we are beginning our new car search.

I'm just happy if they have their lights on at all. You'd think it cost extra to turn them on at dusk--it's insane. I've never seen so many people driving without their lights on in the dark until I moved to Georgia.
And I'm sure 98% of these vehicles have an "auto" setting for the lights, which, gee, takes the guesswork out of it. I have no idea why that feature is ignored.
I've been driving down the highway at 80mph just keeping up with traffic and suddenly you'll notice there's someone in the lane behind you that you couldn't see because it's pitch dark outside and they have no lights on. On the highway. At 80mph. Lord have mercy.

My Equinox has automatic high beams. It works great except the one evening that there must have been snow on the sensor and I had no idea how to turn off the high beams. Luckily the snow blew off quickly and it's been great ever since.

In addition to lights becoming brighter, I hate to be the one to bring up that part of the issue is that our eyes are aging.
As we age, our pupils operate less effectively and are slower to rebound after being exposed to light in a dark environment. Also, if you have cataracts developing, they cause light to diffuse and bounce around the inside of the eye.

I did have an eye exam maybe 5-6 months ago and he said all looked good. My mom did have cateracts so I will keep checking in with appointments!

I never knew turning headlights on was so difficult for some people.
