I saw a recipe for it and am thinking about making it for this weekend. It's a make ahead thing. You start with a homemade cookie that you crumble to make the crust.
If you believe the internets- people pay 44 dollars for crack pie-
any reviews for the real thing or copy-cat recipe

Are you really a pea?!?! This thread is absolutely use less without the recipe Bwahaha- I was looking for recipes using my TJ COOKIE BUTTER. The original doesn't include cookie butter and is from some fancy bakery in New York- a take off on chess pie. Is that a southern thing? my friends are not foodies or adventurous and I don't want to go to too much work

What the heck is crack pie? I think of crack cocaine and butt crack - neither of which sounds like a tasty pie.

I actually knew this was a Momufuku thing. I didn't, however, realize it costs $44 for a damn pie. Here's the recipe: Momufuku Milk Bar - Crack Pie

That doesn't sound like something I'd enjoy, looking at the recipe. Blecch.

Looks like a lot of work to me. First you have to make the cookie and then the pies. Not sure if I'd like it, so I KNOW I wouldn't pay $44 for it!

I've never heard of it. I'd be willing to try a piece, but I wouldn't be buying one at that price. I wonder why the expense. The ingredients are not pricy or hard to find.

That is a lot of money for pie. Doesn't look too hard make. Would take a bit of time to make.

It looks like a Southern "Chess" pie or Buttermilk Pie.
They ARE cloyingly sweet. Some even have raisins--and some home cooks overbake the custard so it's lumpy (looks like maggots and rat turds)
Usually the crust is just a normal baked pie crust.
Since these pies have milk/buttermilk, people refrigerate them down here. My guess is that the milk powder makes it shelf stable.
Some recipes use finely ground cornmeal to thicken the custard.
This dish is one of those dishes where you either LOVE it or HATE it. I'm in the hate camp. The sugar hurts my teeth, there's no flavor, and usually the places where you can get a chess pie also has other desserts that are worth the calories--somebody's secret recipe Pound Cake, chocolate merengue pie (I will slap anybody's momma for a piece of this from certain cooks) or from scratch banana pudding. (make a homemade vanilla pudding)

yeah, looking at that recipe, the flavor would all be in the crust. There's not enough brown sugar or vanilla for the flavor to be anything much more than just sweet. The corn powder might add an interesting element, and there is a full cup of butter, so it might be worth trying. I would put more than 1/2 t of vanilla in it though. That's just a crime. LOL

Never heard of crack pie. But after following Sock's link, it sounds like a strange version of what I've always known as buttermilk pie. I can't imagine anyone paying $44 for a buttermilk pie.
Where are you located that Chicago is referred to as 'down here' ?

It definitely sounds like a buttermilk pie. From my understanding, Buttermilk pie was something "poor folks" fixed for dessert a long time ago because it was so cheap to make. I sure as HELL wouldn't be paying $44 for one.

When I hear crack, I think of the candy made with saltines, butter, brown sugar and chocolate chips.
It's called crack because you can't stop eating it !

Sorry, I used to be M in Chicago until I moved back to NC a few years ago and changed. My computer autocomplete mixed up my user name when I registered. I'm M in Carolina
I have tried editing my screen name, but it doesn't seem to have worked.
Chess and Buttermilk pie are staples in my area--most of the older church cookbooks have several recipes.
IF I were going to make a "Crack" pie with homemade cookie crust, I'd put a little Bourbon in the custard and bake in a waterbath.

Heh, this is exactly when my great-grandma and grandma would make one-when the budget was stretched to its limit, and they 'had' to have a dessert to serve. Every once in a while, someone in the extended family would get all nostalgic and ask them to make one. Of course, that's also how the traditional family Thanksgiving Dressing recipe originated--hard times. And that's really the only kind of dressing I truly love.

Ah, this totally makes more sense now! For the life of me, I could not figure out how far north you'd have to be to consider Chicago 'down there.'
