That is really bad. I know some sites will list products on sale as online only. But Target May loose lots of customers because of these findings.

Haven’t read the article, but Isn’t that considered a bait and switch? Which I didn’t think would be legal. Maybe I’m wrong.

Just shut off location services on you app, phone, iPad. I do it all the time and have always been given the lower price at the register when I pull it up.

Weird--I was looking online at something in the store a couple of months ago and it was cheaper online than in the store so I ordered it right then & there (wasn't in a rush so I could wait for it to be shipped).

Ouch! They're gonna have a PR mess on their hands with this one. For now the best thing to do would be to turn off location services at least for that app.

That is really shady. It seems like it would make better business sense to offer a lower price in store, since they also offer free shipping (I believe) so they would be losing more on the online purchase.
Turning my location off now!

Last week at JCPenney I went in to get a sweatshirt that I saw online first. The price difference was around $20. They offer buy online pick up in store. They had a whole rack but said none were available for that option. The sales person found a way to give me the price but she had to find a coupon code and I still paid a little more.

What bugs me the most is even though I have the settings off, I have to check the app to see if the item is cheaper online than in the store. Every item!

Hmmm...that would really irritate me. I often look for something online and check to see if it is in the store, to avoid a wasted trip. If it says no, I usually don't bother trying to look in the store. Sometimes I will buy it online to pick up in the store, sometimes I just go to the store. That is usually at Target, but I have done that at Kohl's and probably other stores as well. I always assumed that the website was accurate if it said there were none available (although sometimes it says there are some available and when I get to the store that is wrong).

I saw this story on the news last night, and they said that Wal-Mart doesn't do it, but I know they do. The price might not change in the parking lot like that, but I know the online prices are not always the same as in store. I guess I don't see it as a big deal. The online price is just that, an online price. You can get the item for that price if you buy it online.

I bought a printer at Best Buy recently. It was $60 less online and they did adjust the price when we pointed it out to the cashier. It's really annoying to have to check the online price on everything though!

That’s shady. And that makes perfect sense why I seemingly haven’t been getting online advertised prices (that were the reason I went in there) at the register.
Could you get around it by ordering at home, and picking up?
But really who wants to reward something that shady with their business, at all. 🤨

Keep location services OFF for almost all apps except the ones you really want to have it - like maps. The rest is just giving corps tons of data about where you go at what time that they can turn around and sell to data merchants to have ever-more-creepy profiles of you.

"“That particular experiment reveals so many interesting facts about our retail environment,” said John. “Somebody at Target programmed in an algorithm which says someone who is 50 feet within the store is willing to pay more. The most reasonable explanation is that you just revealed your commitment to buying the product, you're in the store, or in the parking lot. If you are further away, you haven't quite committed, so I'm going to give you a juicier deal. That's why the price went up when you got closer to the store.”"
Creepy. Psychology and marketing in a toxic brew to maximize the money they can get out of you by using the location information you've given them AGAINST YOU.

I keep my location off for everything but maos, but this still makes me angry that they would do this to any customer. I've always liked Target, but this makes the company look sleazy.

Macy's does this constantly. And I don't get it. It's almost like the stores want to be shutdown and us go to a strictly online business. Why wouldn't you entice people into the store?

That is really crappy... just another way of screwing with the public.. ugggg
And by the way I HATE their Cartwheel app now.. I don't even bother. It logs me out and their service is iffy at best so then I have to wait to get logged in IF I can even get the service. So yeah.. I just don't bother. (I guess if I had some big ticket item I would.. uggg)

My target story. Not quite the same.
In December, I was buying a $100 item that was marked down to 70. The website offered free shipping or free in store pickup with many available in the closest store. I went to the store to look art the item before purchasing rather than do an in store pickup.
When I went to check out it rang up as 100 dollars. I had to get a manager and they really did not want to honor the sale price - they said it was on line only. I asked how would I know that and was told since the price rang up differently at the register - it must be on line only. I asked them if they preferred I stood there and order using in store pick up so that an employee could go get me another of the item I already had in the cart. They reluctantly gave me the lower price.
Had it been advertised as an on line only price and they not have offered in store pickup I would not have gone to the store to purchase.
I think what bothered me the most about the situation was that the manager didn’t understand why I didn’t want to pay full price for the item.

Slight hijack here while we are griping about Target: Am I the only one who HATES their new layout in the store?!? You can’t find a darn thing and the whole ‘boutique’ look makes NO sense. I hate it so much!!! I used to love going there and now it makes me so annoyed it’s not even fun anymore. I don’t usually mind changes, but this one is just awful.
Rant over. Carry on!

Ours was the third one to go through the change several years ago. I just now am finding things without wandering all over the damn store. They need to make an app for what aisle each item is located. I love Target. It might be because I really dislike Walmart, but it is less than a mile from my house and I go every week, so I can't give up on Target. I remember reading an article several years ago about Target trying to set themselves apart from Walmart, but I thought they already had.

I have been on the "anti-Target bandwagon" for quite some time. I doubt I go there more than three or four times a year now, although I do check out the Sunday ad each week to see if there is anything I need at a good price.
They lost me as a customer when they quit carrying a decent selection of plus-size clothing. I used to love their Cherokee line, but they quit carrying those and replaced them with some designer who seems to think all of us fluffier ladies want to wear the same styles as the MTV size 0 crowd--only instead of sizing them correctly, they put the patterns on the copier and enlarged. So for every increase in waist size, they also made the pants longer to the point that my size 22 slacks might not drag the ground if I were 6 feet tall.
On the few occasions I am in the store, I always check out their clearance rack and find it laughable. They have items marked at prices that are HIGHER than they were on sale just a few weeks earlier. I used to take advantage of their holiday clearance sales to get reward items for my classroom. I am no longer teaching, so it really doesn't matter to me any more, but I think they are out of touch with many of us who used to shop there for quality items at a good price. I bought a lot of kids clothing there (as well as a lot of my teacher clothes), and while some of it was not the best quality, my kids never wore it out before they outgrew it, and the hand-me-downs made it through at least another child before needing to go in the trash.
I know Walmart gets a lot of bad press, but at least they seem to want me as a customer.
