Do any of you have ear pain as a symptom/sign of a migraine?
I recently went to see my doctor as I kept having sinus infections. Upon examination, my ears and nose were clear...no infection.
She diagnosed me with migraines--especially since I've complained about a stabbing pain in my eye when I've had my "sinus infections".
I also have had unexplained pain in my ears. Mostly my left ear. When I have the stabbing pain, it's also in my left eye.
I've poked around online about ear pain/migraines and there is some evidence that ear pain can be a symptom, however, my doctor didn't mention it. I'm just curious if anyone else experiences this and how they deal with the migraines.
Right now, she wants me to keep a headache journal. I have been, but I feel like I constantly have a headache because my eyes hurt...I think it's from strain. I need an eye exam that I'll be scheduling soon.
Any advice? Information, etc.?

I have “silent” migraines that consist of pain in one nostril like right before you sneeze and a burning sensation from the nostril along my cheek down into my ear to my neck and along my jaw back to my nose. Feels like that loop around my face is on fire. The area in my ear throbs with my pulse

yes, sometimes the sinus stuff is a trigger.. they used to make a advil sinus migrane that i really liked for that reason. I don't think they make it anymore, it's just the excederine migrane, but sometimes i can do that and a benedryl..And ENT can check for those issues too.

I have not experienced pain in my ears before or during a migraine. Sometimes my eyeball feels like it is going to explode though.

Could you have an abscessed tooth somewhere? No, I thought that might be it because I've often had pain in one of my molars when I have a sinus infection. In fact, once it hurt so bad I called the dentist and they examined my teeth, took an x-ray and everything and there was nothing. My sinuses, however, were filled! I just had a dental exam a bit a ago and my teeth are all good.

Yes. I can get ear pain. I more get eye pain on one side. An ice pack can help this type of pain. I take a cocktail of meds when I get a migraine but if the pain is so bad for the hour I’m waiting for the meds to kick, or if I missed the meds window of when they’ll work, I’ll use an ice pack for relief.
I used to get more migraines that affected my eyes and ears - intense pressure and stabbing type pain. Dr thought they were my migraines. Turned out they were a side effect from thyroid disease and my thyroid was under treated. Uncommon thyroid symptom but increasing my thyroid meds (randomly for another reason) reduced the eye / ear pain by 85%. It was life changing.
As an aside, I also had joint pain from under medicated thyroid. Adjusting the thyroid meds, (again for a random other reason) reduced my joint pain by 85%. Then asking to over medicate my thyroid reduced these pains in my eyes, ears and joibts out to 95%.
Good luck!

Could you have an infection up in your sinuses without having a stuffy nose? I’ve been having a lot of problems with my sinuses too, and sometimes I have a huge sinus headache but my nose feels clear. If I were you, I would go see an ENT. Your regular doctor might be missing something. I only say this, because I have suffered from migraines my entire life. And I can definitely tell the difference between a sinus headache, which is sometimes in the same area, and a migraine. And I haven’t really had ear pain with migraines.

About 12 years ago, I had a headache for almost a year. It seemed all sinus related and I was diagnosed with several sinus infections. Finally, I asked how I could keep having sinus infections with no drainage or congestion. I was finally sent to an ENT. He determined I was having migraines and they were being caused from a deviated septum. That when my sinuses would get swollen, it would press on the nerve and thus causing my migraines. Once I was able to get it under control, I know when one is coming on and how to deal with it. Sometimes, I do feel pressure in my ears from this. Not pain really but more like pressure. So I'm sure it's possible for you to be having ear pain with one.
I have learned over the years that everyone's migraines are unique to them and manifest differently and are triggered differently.

There are a bunch of us who routinely create migraine threads (or pain threads). Search when you have time.
I've had migraines for over 40 years due to an eye accident (hence my pic). I was on mega doses of aspirin for 30 years until it destroyed my throat and stomach. I went to a neurologist (something you might want to consider), and I've been in the care of my pain management doctor for the past 6 years. He tried a few Rx's for the migraine pain and I'm on Maxalt 10mg when a migraine episode begins. It usually helps. I'm also on a daily Rx for chronic head pain, but we're weaning me off slowly.
As far as the pain, i usually know my triggers (strong odors & perfumes, sunlight, noise), and my pain is usually behind my eyes or in my face. Sometimes it begins in the base of my neck. I've never had pain in my ears, but when I feel sinus congestion they are full and could set off pain. I try to take Sudafed if a hot shower or warm compresses to my face didn't help. If the Sudafed didn't work then I take the Maxalt. Sometimes it progresses to a sinus infection quickly, so you have to be careful.
I'd make sure your vision is okay and maybe check with a neurologist. Primary doctors aren't much help with migraines. The Peas can share what meds and tricks they use for their migraine pain. I hope you get to the botom of it. A journal is also good to not only track the migraines but to also keep a log of what you ate and what type of pain you're having. Lastly, if you're taking a lot of OTC meds, you might be better off with a full checkup and maybe a pain Dr.

Ha I woke up with one this morning. But the pain is going down my jaw and for front of my face it's also raining. I think in the winter time it's harder because so many things factor.. I hope you find some releif. Excederin has done wonderful things. There is Tompromate (Sps) which I was gonna mention it last night. I was on it for a while. But with some nerve damage from various things they strike at no warning.. but it did help cut back on the intensity.

I get inner ear pain., and even though my neurologist attributed them to being minor migraines, I believe it's more from something inflammatory and autoimmune/diet related for me. If I accidentally eat trigger foods, like potatoes (the starch is hidden in a lot of things) I get some ear pain as well as lymph congestion. Do you have any autoimmune issues?
(side note: I didn't know migraines could still be migraines if they weren't debilitating, I found that interesting!)

Yes, I routinely got ear pain with a migraine.
Here is the important part -- It turned out that sometimes the two sides of my nose would touch and irritate a nerve that triggered a migraine. I got surgery to straighten my deviated septum and it greatly reduced the number and severity of my migraines. If you are a person that gets ear pain I would definitely look into whether there is something in your nose area that is causing a problem.
Here is the tricky part - the two sides of my nose didn't touch all the time. It would only happen when something in the air or something I ate caused swelling. I was lucky that one time I went to the nose doctor they were actually touching and he could see it. A couple of times when I went after that I had a migraine and they were not touching. The doctor explained to me that once the sides touch and the nerve gets irritated, it starts a migraine but even when the swelling goes down, the migraine continues because of that initial irritation of the nerve. I had gone to many neurologists and headache specialists and they never even mentioned this as a possible cause, even though I complained that sometimes when I get a headache I have the sensation of not getting enough air. The only way I ended up discovering the problem was about page 30 of a google search where a doctor in Texas mentioned it as a possible cause of migraines. Even when I went to the nose doctor to ask him about it, he explained to me for about 5 minutes that the sensations I was feeling were all symptoms of migraines, and that what I was suggesting was not the cause. The minute he looked up my nose he apologized and said that indeed the two sides were touching.
I was lucky because the sides were actually touching that day I went to the nose doctor. If they weren't he would have sent me home and I would have figured it couldn't be the cause of my migraines.
For me it was such a relief because I'd had serious migraines for about 30 years.

What works for me is Sudafed of all things.

When I asked the specialist on the migraine/nose connection what candidates have been successful with this surgery, he mentioned sudafed and he mentioned migraine meds not helping. I took preventatives, emergency meds, etc and none had any significant effect.

Sudafed (from behind the counter) also helps me. I feel weird buying it all the time lol. Costco sells a 3 pack, so at least it's in bulk and I don't have to sign the paperwork as often.

They all contain the SAME ingredients, but they're labeled to pinpoint 1 type of pain. Excedrin migrane is the same as their regular Excedrin. I used to use it for years!

Yes, I get pain in my right ear and right eye. I take Aspirin as soon as I'm aware of those things and it pretty much knocks it on the head.

Then asking to over medicate my thyroid reduced these pains in my eyes, ears and joibts out to 95%. Good luck! THANK YOU for that information!!! I was diagnosed with Hashimotos a few years ago by my primary dr. I'm on the low dose of Synthyroid and she doesn't see a need for me to go to an endochronoligist or to change my meds. She says that my "levels are fine". I get bloodwork every 4 months. What you said makes sense! I began to get joint pain, especially when sleeping or staying in the same position for a while & my migraines have gotten back to being daily. I feel it in or behind my eyes. I'm on Fioricet daily (for chronic pain) and take Maxalt 10mg if I feel a migraine coming on, but neither have touched this new migraine pain! I also try Sudafed and it all does nothing! I alternate between warm and cold compresses. Warm feels better on my eyes, but maybe cold helps? I will DEFINITELY be looking into going to an endo to look at my thyroid issues!
