I typically don't take medicine when I have a cold, but am considering it today if there is something that actually works. What do you take when you want to feel normal again? I have a horrible headache, runny/stuffy nose, cough, etc. Thanks!

I do not. It makes me feel weird, and in some cases paranoid (Dayquil is the worst for that). I prefer to deal with the cold symptoms than the way the medicine makes me feel.

I like DayQuil. It doesn't make me sleepy, but helps with the symptoms you mentioned. Walmart has a generic.

Nothing makes me feel normal again. I take cold med so I can feel better than I do without them (or get some restful sleep) but I don't take them to feel normal. I like nyquil if I am needing to sleep and Alka-seltzer cold if I need some relief from the symptoms and still be able to function.

Most cold medicines are nothing more than acetaminophen and decongestant. I don't buy them, but I do keep ibuprofen and naproxen sodium on hand, along with Benedryl and Sudafed. That way, I can customize what I take based on my symptoms. I don't hesitate to take these medications if I feel that I need them.

I typically don't, but in Sept, I had the head cold from hell, and I did take Sudafed and Tylenol to reduce the pressure in my ears to a tolerable level.

I don't take them during the day, they make me feel high and I can deal with a cold in the daytime. However I do take them at night.

Thanks. Feeling "normal is probably wishful thinking, but I at least would like to be able to make it through the day with as little coughing and blowing my nose as possible. My fear is feeling high or strange due to the meds.

That's a good point, and I should have also mentioned that if you take medication that matches your symptoms, you can customize it to meet your needs by controlling dosage. For example, I don't take Benedryl during the day because it will put me to sleep. If I was desperate, I might consider taking one Benedryl instead of two. I also cannot take Sudafed after about 6:00 pm because it keeps me awake at night. I can maybe get away with taking one regular Sudafed instead of two. You cannot do this with a cold medicine that contains multiple ingredients.

You cannot do this with a cold medicine that contains multiple ingredients. My kid's pediatrician told us to do exactly this a long time ago. He said that it is easier to take a single medication, but it often addresses symptoms you may not have. By taking individual medications targeted at the symptoms you do have is much better for your body. Headache? take an aleve or tylenol. Cough? Take cough medicine. Stuffy? Take a decongestant. And, like Jili said, you can customize what is best for you.

I'm curious why you would take Benadryl if you have a cold? Isn't it just an antihistamine that would be used for allergies?

I take Delsym when I have a cough and while it does take away my cough, I feel doozy on it. I have always wondered if it actually shortens my duration or not? So you guys are all taking nothing?

I will take a cough medicine if needed, but otherwise I just take something at night. I don't like the way daytime child needs make me feel.

I do Sudafed (the stuff behind the pharmacy counter, the other version doesn't do anything for me) and Advil if I am achy or have a fever. I don't feel like the combo meds (DayQuil, etc) are as effective.

For coughing, I take Delsym. It works great and doesn't taste awful.

If I'm achy or have a headache I'll take Tylenol, but mostly I rely on hot lemon & honey and my Neti Pot to feel better.

Wow, I guess I'm the only one who takes meds. When sick I always take NyQuil at night, I love it as it puts me to sleep. And take DayQuil during the day. I follow the dosing instructions very carefully though, so there is never a chance of overdosing.

Mucinex is my best friend when I have a cold. I purchased Mucinex D (behind the counter) this week for head and chest congestion and I'm glad I did. I'm rather fond of the concept of breathing.

I had a summer cold last week. I took Nyquil at night and it seemed to help me a lot. As a rule I generally take just Tylenol but I felt so bad with the stuffiness and the horrible headache that I had to do something. Much better today. Almost back to normal.
Hope you feel better soon.

My 14 yo DS started showing signs of a cold a few weeks ago. Normally, a cold knocks him out of school for a week at a time because it makes his usual dormant asthma symptoms flare badly. I gave him Zicam and by the next morning, his cold was mostly gone. We had never used it before. It's the product that claims that it reduces the duration of a cold if you take it at the first sign of one. Seemed to do the trick for us unless it was just coincidence.

I think I'm going to get some Zicam. I always wondered if it worked. If it does work for me that would be great.
I wish I could take Dayquil or something like that. Every cold medicine I take gives me the worst migraine especially if it has a decongestant in it. I think it has something to do with my high blood pressure which is normally controlled with the meds I take but the decongestant must be to strong for the meds to counteract. I tried the cold medicine made for people with high blood pressure but it was a waste of money because it didn't relieve any of my symptoms.

Advil Cold and Sinus -- keeps things under control enough that I can get through the day.

I seem to catch everything coming and going since I started working in a school. Those little germ factories!
Anyway, I don't tough it out and I tried all the natural remedies and didn't find anything that helped enough. What I need when I have a cold is rest and I don't get that if I'm hacking or stuffy. NyQuil at night, mucinex by day, Advil cold-sinus for pressure pain.
