Resigning immediately was the right thing to do. Now they can regroup and go forward.

At this point, resigning is all that could happen. She has lost the confidence that is required for her to get anything done, much less the changes that will need to occur.

I just read Ms. Pearson's bio. She was on THREE presidential details (Bush, Clinton, Bush), and her subsequent assignments in her 30 years with the agency seemed appropriate for appointment/ascension to director. It was probably uncommon to be a female agent when she started in 1984. I would be interested to hear her unvarnished view of things. (I'm not defending her, but I'm curious.) I understand why Mrs. Obama would be hopping mad. She, her husband, and her daughters are surrounded by agents, which must feel like such an intrusion. You would hope the pay-off would be a sense of trust and well-being. I am not a huge fan of the current President but think he should be protected because of who and what he is. Can you imagine the issues/unrest/civil uprising we would have if he were assassinated? Maybe, but my first concern would not be that.

That list doesn't even mention the fake interpreter that nobody even knew who he was and they had him standing next to the President and other heads of state. The sign language interpreter was hired by the event organizers in South Africa. He had credentials; he didn't just jump on stage. It's the job of the people hiring to vet skills, like whether the stenographer knows the keyboard or whether the interpreter can sign. (From what I remember, this was - unbelievably - not the first time the organizers had used this particular yahoo interpreter. Here's hoping they've learned their lesson...)

I had read that the country’s deaf community and the African National Congress had no idea who he was and in another article that they weren't even sure he was vetted. But just now I read another article that said he knows sign language but had trouble interpreting English and he's schizophrenic and was hearing voices and seeing angels flying into the stadium during the event.

@mytnice: That's the problem; he wasn't skill-vetted by the organizers. In their defense, there was probably nobody who knew sign who COULD vet him. (Just like here. But here, we have interpreter licensure and the organizer often uses an interpreter agency, so assumes skill. I'm not sure how it works in SA.) And yes, the SA Deaf community - in fact, Deaf communities around the world - were mystified by the whole thing. I don't believe his story; there are YouTube videos of him signing just as abysmally at other events. But he's got moxie.

"I was going to stay and address the deficiencies within the Secret Service but after reading the 2peasrefugees site, I'm afraid I'm going to have to resign. Those ladies are pretty upset with me."
