First couple of sentences of article Pope Francis has admitted that clerics have sexually abused nuns, and in one case they were kept as sex slaves.
He said in that case his predecessor, Pope Benedict, was forced to shut down an entire congregation of nuns who were being abused by priests.
It is thought to be the first time that Pope Francis has acknowledged the sexual abuse of nuns by the clergy.
He said the Church was attempting to address the problem but said it was "still going on".www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-47134033It is still going on...

I knew this was going on. My great aunt said her cousins became priests ( way back around the 1900s-1930s, for 3 reasons
All the alcohol they could drink Food and shelter that they didn’t have to provide for themselves And all the sex (women or boys) they could want. Her cousins preferred married woman because they could get pregnant and people would think it was their husband’s.

😧 I don’t know why, but I am shocked over this. I had no idea this was happening. I’m the same. It had never occurred to me that nuns could be treated like this in the Church. How awful.

I’m shocked and thankful that Pope Francis is speaking out. The horrors in our world run so deep. I just don’t understand how humans can be so sick and cruel.

Here's an idea: Defrock any priest who has participated in such deeds IMMEDIATELY. --Don't wait even a week to make the decision.
Report the priest to the legal authorities, for prosecution.
Seems to me that would shut it down.

I have zero respect for the current Pope, especially with how the Pennsylvania abuse cases were handled. I saw the 60 Minute special and it was appalling. It took an administrative assistant who gave a damn to make it public. They did not punish enough people.

Sadly, not shocked at all.
When I was little, I overheard several older relatives talking from time to time that the orphanages were filled with babies that nuns had given birth to and the priests were the fathers.

😧 I don’t know why, but I am shocked over this. I had no idea this was happening. I feel exactly the same way. I don't know why I had never thought of this before. It is horrifying to me and I think there would have been so many affected and very powerless to speak out.

Oh my god.
This horrible, horrible thing and we are only finding out now. How many victims does the Catholic church have? How many more have never dared to come forward?
And WTF? How hard is it to at minimum defrock and at maximum prosecute?

When I was a little kid there was an older girl down the street who was in a large very Catholic family. She became a nun and the family was so proud of her. She quit and later it came out she quit because of abuse by a priest. That was back in the '60s. So, yeah, it's been going on always and I'd be willing to bet it will continue.

If you haven’t watched The Keepers on Netflix you should..it’s a True Crime documentary.
DH was born and raised Catholic and when all the Pa scandals came out he knew a lot of the names on there..some he was shocked about and some he knew already. He left the church when he was in his late teens and I’m grateful for that because I don’t think I could have married someone who supports this religion...I personally don’t believe in organized religion, but the Catholic Church is on a whole over level along with the FLDS people when it comes to all these scandals. I’m well aware it happens in all religions...it’s almost like a breeding ground for rapists.

Notice ‘forced to shut down a congregation of nuns’ WTF this is why I’m not catholic anymore Maybe, just maybe, leave the nuns alone and take the abusive priests away. Perhaps the congregation of nuns would have been perfectly capable of caring for themselves physically & spiritually once he removed the abusive priest or priests plural. So as usual, rather than holding the priests responsible they just ‘dissolve’ The congregation of nuns.

When I was little, I overheard several older relatives talking from time to time that the orphanages were filled with babies that nuns had given birth to and the priests were the fathers. Netflix has a movie out called The Innocents. Polish nuns during WWII were raped and impregnated by Russian soldiers. They started an orphanage to keep their babies. Initially the house mother killed them. It’s based on a true story. It’s just so disgusting.

I don’t know why it didn’t occur to me, it just didn’t. I guess because I’ve just never heard about it. I shall look up the two shows mentioned on this thread.
