I am about 60 pounds overweight and very out of shape. I'm ready to make a change so today I started the Couch to 5K program. I've downloaded an app for my phone that tells me when to run and when to walk. I wasn't able to even do the entire workout today, but I DID IT!! and that's what's important.
I definitely need a good sports bra. I didn't realize it until I started running, so I'm going to be looking for one. Are there any tips that you can give? I've been reading some of the forums on the C25K site and it looks like wearing shorts while running when overweight isn't suggested due to chaffing? Today I wore yoga capris and they were comfortable. I think I'll look into getting moisture wicking shirts for running as I don't like to be sweaty.
One of my goals is to run in a Turkey Trot 5K that we have on Thanksgiving Day.
Any other things I haven't thought of?

First I want to say good for you for wanting to make the change! It's so hard taking that first step, and you did it! I too am doing c25k and am on week 2, day 2. I have about 75 pounds to lose and am finding this program really enjoyable and doable! I would have to agree with wearing yoga style pants or capris when running...the shorts just ride up and it's hard to run/walk and try to pull the shorts back down at the same time. . Stay well hydrated (though I'm sure you already know that), and make sure you have a good pair of shoes - I swear they make all the difference! Here's wishing you much success on your completion of the program and running that Turkey Trot!

Great job! When I did it I was scared of moving on to the next week before I was ready, so I did each week twice until I got to week five or seven. I think that helped me feel successful.

Go to a specialty store for your running bra. If you have a Title 9 where you live, they are awesome for this.(If they are not in your area I am sure others will have suggestions) It is simply to hard to grab a bra off the shelf at Walmart and call it good. You really should be fitted. Wear what you want when you run. If you like shorts wear them...the point is to get out there and work out. I wear black Capri's that are so old they are super soft. I love them. I also like my old tried and true green Dirty Dash shirt. It makes me happy, it is soft and I feel like I can run forever when I wear it. I wear it often, washing it of course. Even if you can't run the entire Turkey Trot, get out there and do what you can...that way the rest of the days calories don't count!!

Good for you! I started with the C25K program, and I really liked it. It gave me a very concrete goal every week to work towards. Stick with it…it can get hard at times, but you will be amazed at what your body can do if you put your mind to it. Remember that running is hard. It gets easier, but it never gets easy. Make sure you have good shoes. They can be pricey, but if you are running in your old sneakers, you are just asking for injury. I also remember when I started that I had pain, swelling, and general ouchiness. I went to the doc just because I was a tad concerned, and he said that it was just my body getting use to running. Keep at it! Turkey Trots are great fun!

Don't be afraid to repeat a workout if you don't feel like you can move on. I have done it once or twice when I just didn't feel ready to move on, and after doing 1 week a second time I felt stronger and moved on to the next one. also after each run, stretch!!!!!!!! find some easy ones to loosen your legs at first you may not be able to go very far but if you do it EVERY time you will get more and more flexible. I am still not very flexible compared to many but its a bit more day by day.

I like sports bras from Moving Comfort. Expensive, but if you've got a big chest, they really work. Please come join us on the weekly runner & walker threads!

Congratulations! It is great that you are doing it. My one thing would be don't be intimated when you change from week to week. You will be surprised at what you can really do!
Like others said don't feel bad about repeating a week. I restarted C25k like four times over the years until I finally completed it and moved on from there.
Good luck!

There is a blog called people I want to punch in the throat. I don't know how to link but she did a great sports bra review recently for ladies with big boobs. Congrats for getting up and getting moving. My fibro does not allow me to run or even walk somedays but I do walk when I can. I would like to walk run more for heart health but i just do what I can:) good luck!

For chafing, which if you run can happen in weird places, try body glide or monistat anti-chafing gel.

You can totally do it! Just keep pushing through...my biggest motivation is doing something I don't think I can do! I ran my first 5K (Turkey Trot) in 2008 at about 240 pounds. I did a walk/run combo. I have since run 3 additional 5Ks and used C25K to train and I also ran the Turkey Trot 10K last year. It was amazing!!! I'm proud of you!

Moving Comfort bras are great!
I did the program and just take it day by day! I was so nervous before my first 20 min run but the feeling you get when you are done is amazing!
As for chafing have you tried body glide? I think some people may use that. Not sure since I don't have that problem.
Also mske sure to load up a really good playlist! Music helped me so much to get through.
Have fun!!!

I used to run and stopped when pregnant with DD3. Now I want to start again. I tried the C25K app, but even a minute of slow jogging was really hard on my knees! I walk, so I don't think it's lack of movement... but it's like my knees are all dried up and stiff feeling. Anyone else deal with this??

Thanks so much for all your kind words of encouragement and support. I know that I didn't run very much yesterday, but I'm still a bit surprised that I'm not sore at all today. I do yoga 3-4 times a week, so that's probably helping. I did stretch before and after. I'll probably have to add more stretches as I increase my running time. I'll be sure to check out the weekly running/walking thread. It's nice to know that I have company on this journey.

I tried the C25K last year and did a 5K, at a fast walk. It has been a year and I just started walking again to do the same 5K - this time I plan on not worrying about whether I can keep up with the others, I will walk, sweating to the oldies style if I have to, and make it work!
I'm sure your yoga is a great help - keep going!

Can I be your C25K buddy? I really want to do a 5K but I am a slacker. If you post on the weekly running thread I will try copy your runs. Are you using an app?

I have big boobs and I love the Enell sports bras. I doubt I will ever even try anything different. I did the Zombies Run 5k training last fall to train for the Turkey Trot. Even though I've continued to run all year, my husband and I been doing that training program again this fall, mostly to improve our time, and because it's a fun app. There are a couple things that have made it easier for me to stick with running even though I'm still overweight and it's always hard. The first is finding a place that I like to run. Not crowded so I don't feel self-conscious. Gradual elevation changes. And beautiful - I run on a trail through the woods that runs along our reservoir. Going there is a delight every single time, it's like a special treat to escape from the world. The second is good music. The second mile is always the hardest for me. My legs are tired, I haven't gotten my wind yet, it's almost always a slog. It really helps to have Eminem talking right to me telling me I've got to search within me to find that inner strength to keep going. I figure if Eminem and Nate Dogg will keep going till they collapse, darn it, I can too! I set little goals the whole way through the run and that also helps it from becoming monotonous.

Leap, I'd LOVE for you to be my C25K buddy! Thanks for asking. I'll post weekly on the running/walking thread. We can cheer each other on and keep each other accountable. I have an Android phone and am using a free app that I found called "C2K5 FREE." It doesn't have music. (I don't know if one that is a paid app does have music or not.)

I just started C25K this week. It hasn't been easy. I am an overweight, out of shape, middle aged woman. But I want to take better care of myself, for the sake of my family. So I thought this would be a good start.
I'm also using the free Android app.

I've gotten about halfway through my c25k app and have kind of stalled out in adding more running time. I'm at the point where I'm doing about half running/half walking and have hit a wall with actually running longer intervals. So I'm working on increasing time/distance/speed keeping at the half run/half walk pace. I want to get to the point where I can comfortably do 5k in a reasonable amount of time even if I'm not strictly running, because I want to do a turkey trot 5k in November.
I will probably try lengthening the run segments again when it really, truly cools down and gets less humid here, in another few weeks.
I am 41 and fat, and am pleased with the progress I've made. I've lost a little weight but notice a big increase in energy and stamina through my work day.
So I guess my tip is to keep at it even if you stall out on the same "week" for a while. The benefits are in moving, sweating and getting your heart rate up, and you can do that at a brisk walk for as long as your body needs to.

The benefits are in moving, sweating and getting your heart rate up, and you can do that at a brisk walk for as long as your body needs to. Have you tried Jeff Galloway's system yet? He recommends alternating walking and running throughout the whole distance. It doesn't slow you down, most people who try it actually go faster than when they try to run continuously. It allows you to run much longer distances and stay injury free. I started running for the first time ever last September using his apps and in one year ran a couple of 5Ks, a couple of 10Ks and THREE half marathons. I'm running the Army 10 Miler on the 12th, and another Half Marathon in early November. And I'm 51. Using Galloway's system I run using a 1:30 run / 1:00 walk ratio and I end up passing quite a few people on the race course who try to run the whole way and have to stop because of cramps, exhaustion, etc. So, I'm encouraging you to continue to both run and walk since that works for you. It is actually a wonderful way to run. Galloway, btw, is the official race coach for all the runDisney events. You know that Disney could hire whomever they want to, and they picked Jeff because women really can follow his running programs and have success. He has apps for training programs from 5K all the way up to Marathons. I've used both the 10K and Half Marathon one - you can put your own music into the program too.

Please don't stretch before you run! I know in the old days they used to recommend stretching before exercising, but that has changed. You run a higher risk of injuring yourself if you stretch while your muscles are cold. You should save stretching until after your run when your muscles are hot.
