I finally decided on a color to paint my cabinets in my office. I've been procrastinating this job for several YEARS. So I went to walmart (first mistake) and asked for a quart of their best in the color I wanted in semi gloss. The guy said ok and I said I'd be right back, I needed to grab a couple things. When I got back, it was sitting on the counter and it was NOT what I asked for. It was the walmart brand. After several minutes I tracked him down and asked what the deal was. He said they didn't have semigloss in the better stuff.
I was annoyed but I bought it. Today I decided to start painting and, just as I figured, it's not covering. It will take 2 coats which means I won't have enough paint anyway. Plus I wanted the most durable because I bring my dogs up here and they are "energetic" with the cabinet surfaces. To top it all off, it wasn't even mixed all the way.
Would you return the paint and complain about what you ended up with? I can *probably* get my money back. I'll have to go elsewhere to find a new can.
I think if I explained it's NOT what I asked for and I was just given a 2nd choice (which was 2 steps away from what I asked for) without consulting me.... and it wasn't mixed properly, I think they'll take it back. Based on those facts, would you take it back? Not On if you THINK they'll take it back.

Unless there's a satisfaction guarantee on the item, I wouldn't return it simply because it didn't meet up to the standards of the other brand I was expecting. However, I would return it if it wasn't mixed all the way.

You can try but they might not take it back. For something like cabinets I would want something like Rustoleum Cabinet Transformations. I used that on a set of my childhood dressers that I wanted to clean up and update for DD and it worked GREAT. My brother is a painter so I had him paint them with a sprayer because I knew it wouldn’t look as good brushed on and I didn’t want to screw it up, LOL. We’ve had the dressers in her room for almost seven years and they look as good as the day he refinished them.

These are utilitarian cabinets. I'm not going to get out a spray gun or anything like that. It doesn't have to look like a brand new kitchen. I just want the raw wood covered.

Depending on how much money you’re out I would just chalk it up so I wouldn’t have to deal with WM customer service...I hate WM with the passion so I would just let it go and head to Lowe’s or HD.

For me personally, it would depend on how much the paint cost. Is it worth your time and effort to go back to Walmart? If it wasn't that expensive I wouldn't bother and might try to use it to paint a few accessories like picture frames if it is a close enough match to what you end up getting or for other craft projects. It is annoying that the guy didn't wait to check with you about changing the actual paint so if it is a matter of principle to you I think you should return it. How is that for 2 opposing answers? Hope you can get the project done without any other problems!

Adding, I painted some melamine cabinets in my laundry room and it was recommended that I use a good primer first to help the paint stick. I used either Zinser or Killz and it really helped. I used regular Behr Premium paint from Home Depot and they came out great and are holding up. I used a roller which left a slight texture (cabinets are those flat surface ones) but it looks fine. I've painted doors before and used a good brush on those. The Wooster shortcut professional one is my favorite. Works great and if you wash it out well can be used for years.

First, I would go to Sherwin Williams; Second as long as you are out, I'd try to return the paint to Walmart.

We don't have a sherwin williams #smalltownlivin
I have an ace hardware and a few lumberyards. The "painting place" is currently closed due to a fire.

I would return it and say that you aren’t happy with the coverage. If you say the paint wasn’t mixed entirely, they can just put it back in the shaker and reshape it.
Then I’d go to Benjamin Moore. It’s probably the best paint out there. But they are probably going to tell you to Prime the cabinets first.
Second choice would be Behr from Lowe’s. Again, you really should Prime the cabinets, especially if you are expecting heavy use of the cabinets. The paint will adhere better.

I just googled Ace. They sell Benjamin Moore and Valspar. I’d pick Ben Moore over Valspar, but Valspar is ok. You just may need another coat.

I wouldn’t have gone to Walmart for paint, firstly - just because I wouldn’t expect the person staffing the counter to *know* their paint. I would have gone to Sherwin Williams or Lowe’s or something. BUT, if Walmart was my only option, I wanted the best they had, I would have done my homework, and specified the brand - not left it up to them.
That being said, if I wasn’t happy with the coverage - yes, I’d return it if you are able to.

I haven't done this but I saw a sign last time I was in Walmart express returns:
Return Options Download the Walmart App. Click Services tab. Scan your receipt, use Walmart Pay or select Start a Return. Start a return. Select the item you want to return. Follow the prompts on screen. Find the Service Desk in store. Join the Express Lane. Click Scan on the home screen. Scan the QR code at the desk.

Walmart does sell Killz, which makes great primers. I did not prime my kitchen cupboards (rookie mistake) and I’ll be redoing them this spring.

I wouldn't return it simply because I bought it knowing it wasn't what I wanted from the outset. I wouldn't have bought it. If I buy something knowing it isn't the right thing or thing I have a preference for, then I feel the loss is on me.
If it isn't well mixed they can mix it again.

You asked for their best paint. The person at the counter mixed up your color in a lesser quality paint without getting your ok first. You decided to be a good sport and give it a try since it wasn't something that could simply be put back on the shelf. It didn't work for you.
YES, I'd return it.

Also when you buy paint they are suppose to show you the paint mixed. Or I've always had that at home Depot and any paint store ive been too.
You can try to return it. How much hassle will it be? How much was it. Is it worth the effort to return.

The time to ask for it mixed in a different paint base was when you were at the store. You went ahead and purchased what they mixed, so it's on you.
I wouldn't expect great paint from Walmart. I wouldn't expect any paint to cover in one coat, and especially not over raw wood. I also live in a small, rural town, and have to drive 45 minutes to get decent paint. It's worth it.

i've learned that there are different grades of paint quality and Walmart just doesn't have the quality that Benjamin Moore, Sherwin Williams, Home Depot or even Lowes have. it's kind of a you-get-what-you-pay-for kind of thing. this might be on you because you if you even had the slightest inkling that the Walmart paint may be an iffy bet. cheap or bad quality paint just isn't worth all the time and effort it takes to paint anything.

Probably 95-97% of my house is painted with Walmart brand paint, including my kitchen cabinets. I’ve never had a problem with it. I used less than a gallon painting all of my kitchen cabinets and I have a lot of cabinets.

I used less than a gallon painting all of my kitchen cabinets and I have a lot of cabinets. Same here. I have even taken in paint chip samples and they matched them just fine. The mixing issue? Well, that is easily taken care of. They just need to re-shake it. The issue of switching out? That should have been taken care of before you left. If it was the wrong color, then I would take it back. Did they let you look at it before you accepted the can? Mine always open it and do a dab and dry it so I can see it dry and if I like it. You say the can you wanted was just two steps over. Did you see it before or after they mixed it? I ask because if you were at WM and saw the correct paint, then I would have had it corrected before I left. Otherwise, no I wouldn't take it back.

I returned paint to Walmart that wasn't even close to what I ordered...and learned not to ever buy paint at Walmart again. The people in the paint department didn't know what they were doing. Walmart took it back.

I'm kind of stuck on you asked for their best, but did not specify a brand. But you did specify semi-gloss. So maybe at Walmart the WM brand is their best in semi-gloss?
I would not have gone to Walmart either. Sometimes buying cheap costs more.

I'd think that'd be simple enough for the guy.
