DS graduated from technical college and has been looking for a job without much success. He was going to go to the college this week and see what resources they have available to help him, job leads, resume review etc. Well, Monday he was injured at work and is now in a leg brace for 6 weeks. He cannot work for the next two for sure and they will see after that. Needless to say he is kind of upset about the timing of this. He does not feel he can be actively looking for a job knowing he will start off with restrictions. Also, since the job happened at work he is dealing with the whole worker's comp thing. So far his employer has been very good about everything and have said they will work with him on any restrictions. If he gets a call he would still interview but we thought it best not to be putting to many applications out there at this time unless it was an ideal job he would not want to miss out on. Not really sure what, if anything I am looking for, just wanting to get this off my chest. I feel so bad for him to be so laid up. He cannot bend his leg at all. He even needs to sleep with the brace on. Here is a funny though, DS work asked if he could stop in yesterday to finish filling out some paperwork. DS said he would after he sees the orthopedist. So we go to his work, DS goes in by himself to do the paperwork and I wait. He comes out and tells me what they filled out and what he needs to do next. He then says, "Oh, I also got a raise." I asked if he was due for a raise and he thought he was. The timing was just kind of odd to us.

I think he has to just put the job search on hold until he is ready to work without restrictions.
Best wishes!

I would still look and keep up with the job search, if it was me. Depending on what the field is, what are the chances he'd have to start immediately, anyway? Or, the companies he's interviewing with can see that he's a 'go-getter' who really wants to network and interview, even with the injury, and then he can circle back with places to check in again after his injury has healed.

I would be surprised by a hiring process that took less than 6 weeks. So I don't see any reason not to move forward. Especially the part about checking out the school's resources - do that while he can't work at all!

I would still keep searching. If he finds the perfect job, they can wait for him to be cleared to go back to work.

I think he should continue to look. Can he drive at all? If not, does he have someone to take him to interviews?
Oh and just guessing but I bet he is going to need PT once his leg is healed. Have him talk to the doctor about it.

It's temporary, but it's still a disability. He cannot be discriminated against in the hiring process due to that, as long as he is able to perform the jobs he's applying for with reasonable accommodations. I wouldn't delay the job search. ETA: Yeah, listen to manda. I didn't think about the worker's comp side of things. That could make it all quite a bit trickier.

He cannot drive at this time because we do not have a vehicle her can get into with his leg completely straight. He has to ride in the back seat of our vehicle. When he goes back to work, we do have a plan that should work.
I do think he will continue to look, but maybe be a little pickier about where he applies. I would hate for him to miss an opportunity because of this.
And there will be PT after the brace comes off.

The only way he’s likely to miss an opportunity is if he stops applying. They can’t discriminate against him in the hiring process, and by the time he gets hired and gives notice he’ll be cleared (if all goes well).

No job searching if he isn’t working due to a workers comp claim. It could give them a reason to deny the claim. Maybe wait a month before starting to distribute the resume. You really want to handle the claim and all claim $ before moving on as it may be difficult to handle after terminating employment.
ETA: I work in HR. If he had the same injury but it wasn’t associated with a workers comp claim, I’d say it’s fine to begin search. You just don’t know right now how long this will take to resolve and for how much $.
