End of last year early part of this year there was a tragic story of a young girl that went in for routine surgery and something happened.
She was declared brain dead but her family went to court to take control/ possession of her saying she was not brain dead.
Jahi McMath
The family won the case and moved her from the hospital in Oakland to someplace in NY.
Now the family wants the courts to declare her "alive". Some say its because if she is declared alive the state will have to pay for her care.
I don't know if that is the reason or not. But at this point I just don't know what to think except its time for the family to let her rest in peace.

I wonder who the world-class experts are that the family's attorney found to say she's not brain dead.

I saw the story in this morning's paper and meant to post it here. They're saying they have experts ready to testify that she has brain activity. If it's true, it will apparently be a first.
Me, I'm feeling pretty cynical about the whole thing. The family lawyer is a real piece of work.

I'm cynical too. The photo shown in the news clip, of the poor girl smiling in what looks like a hospital bed, can't be recent. There's no way someone in her condition would look like that.

This whole case is so sad. Whatever the true state of her condition, I hope that poor girl isn't suffering.

When my dad had a brain stem stroke that also killed his left hemisphere while he was still on the ventilator after his bypass surgery, he needed lots of medicine to control the muscle spasms, etc. He stayed on the vent for 3 days while we waiting for my brother to drive in from out of state and for the organ procurement team to fly to the hospital.
I know that brains don't do well on vents anyway. Wouldn't this poor girl's brain be mush by now? Why is someone giving this family such false hope? I just don't get it.
I had a lot of guilt about allowing my father to stay in the condition he was in for 3 days. It couldn't be helped, but it was horrible. It took me almost 2 years to not have flashbacks of him in ICU.
Will the state never step in?

. I was sincerely hoping that in all this time her family would have come to the conclusion that their daughter is not going to wake up, and let her go in peace. I don't mean to be gross, but wouldn't her brain basically be soup at this point after being on a vent for so long?

I wonder if the "private donor" who is paying for her care has decided they no longer wish to do so.

"Brain dead" is a clinical diagnosis.
A random electrical bleep from the heart being forced to pump doesn't equate with being "alive". The family wanted it this way and now they have to live with the consequences of their decision. I'm not hard hearted, but the state and federal taxpayers should not have to bear the millions of dollars in costs of care for someone who is "dead".
That poor girl's body has shut down, let her go.

At what point does this become abuse of a corpse? I mean it's ridiculous that it has gone on this long.

The International Brain Research Foundation maintains that her brain is intact, not liquified like one would expect of someone who is brain dead. They also claim Jahi responds to commands given by her mother, like moving her foot, and that there is electrical activity and blood flow to the brain. But until that is confirmed by other experts, I can't imagine the brain death diagnosis will be reversed. ETA: Here's a link to the article on NBC

Such a sad story.
I can't say what I would do if this were to happen to me, I have never been in that position, but I hope that I would be able to come to terms with my child's situation/prognosis and let them die in peace.

You know, I just had to prepare myself for that slight possibility recently when my son went in for his open heart surgery and I couldn't even think about it. If it would have happened I have no idea how I would have handled it. I've always firmly believed in the let them go and rest in peace theory but let me tell you, when it is your own child laying there, the mind could be pretty hard to convince to give up hope. I just don't know, but my heart is breaking for that momma. Oh I agree, it is not so black and white when it is your child.

The International Brain Research Foundation are neuroscientists who do research. I am not discounting the importance of that.
However,
They aren't the neurosurgeons or other medical doctors who actually treat patients. I wonder how much of this is research for them versus the provision of care. I really wonder about their motivation.

some of her organs were already starting to deteriorate at the hospital and shut down, that was almost a year ago! I cant imagine the state her body is in right now. I think some of this is her parents clinging on to hope but there has been a lot of dishonesty from them so I dont believe a word they say.

We had a close family friend who was in a terrible atv accident. He was pronounced brain dead. No brain activity, the family gathered to say goodbye and remove life support but they decided to sing a hymn to him from church. His favorite. He coughed. His doctors urged them to pull the plug, said it was a reflex. They felt it was J's only way to communicate to them that he was still in there.
His entire funeral had already been planned, and the reception was to be at our house, etc. His family stopped there, stood at his hospital bed and agonized. They decided to wait. A few weeks later he breathed on his own. They took him home still in a coma. He stayed in the coma for five more months. We didn't have much hope and the doctors said he would simply die.
He woke up.
Many years of care and therapy later, he can walk and dress himself and has a mental capability of a five year old but he's alive, and very loved by his family. He loves puzzles and TV game shows and has an excellent long term memory but bad short term.
I'm very interested in what the experts determine in this little girls case. If my friends had listened to the doctor they would have missed out on all of these years of J's life.
