you thought you would like? I am reading A Spark of Light by Jodi Picoult, and I had to give up on it. I like most of her books, but I just cant get into this one.

I don't love that feeling. I am experiencing it right now with "Nine Perfect Strangers" by Liane Moriarty. I read "A Spark of Light". Typically love Picoult, but that wasn't my favorite book of hers. I appreciate that she tried something different, I just don't think it worked for her this time.

I find it much easier to cut my losses these days. I don't know if it's because I am older, or because most of my books are e-books, not an actual book that I would need to get rid of.
I've never been able to get into Jodi Picoult.

I liked the storyline but hated how she wrote it out. A bit confusing and was not a fan.

Yes, it is too confusing, and I read to relax and can't with this book. Not worth the effort.

I hate how each chapter was going backwards. I think I'd have enjoyed the book at lot more if I had read it back to front. I did finish it but only because my husband had bought it for me as a Christmas gift and I didn't want to hurt his feelings.

I've never been able to get into Jodi Picoult. I feel that way too. I think of it this way: I wouldn't listen to songs I don't like. I have no remorse changing the station. And I can always choose to try it again at a later time. Same goes for books. Not enough time to force myself to enjoy them.

If I can’t get into a book by p80-100 I quit. I don’t care how many people tell me it’s a great book. I feel no guilt whatsoever. Too many. Looks I like to read. That said, I always get my books from the public library so no investment there.

I used to be that way about books and movies/tv series, but now I just quit when it's bad or I lose interest.

I use to force myself to finish books even if I hated them. I don't anymore. Life's too short to read books you don't like. LOL
The last book I remember reading that I couldn't finish was Her Fearful Symmetry by Audrey Niffenegger. I just couldn't get into it. I am pretty sure I read that book off and on for close to a year before I gave up on it.

I don't buy books ~ I usually get them from the library or upload them to my Kindle. Several years ago I realized there are so many books out there that I want to read that I can't waste my time on books that become a chore to read. If it doesn't grab me within the first 1/4 of the book ~ I will quit with no regrets. The weekly reading thread on 2Peas has helped immensely. Recently I had Nine Perfect Strangers on my hold list at the library. When so many Peas said they didn't like it, I deleted it and haven't looked back.

Definitely not one of her best.
I hate abandoning books, but sometimes it is such a slog. Gone Girl is my example. 50 pages in I guess the end. On the other hand Game of Thrones took a good 50 pages to suck me in.

I'm trying to finish "The Brief Wonderous Life of Oscar Wao" and I freaking hate it. HATE. IT. I'm about half way through. Drives me nuts, because I dearly love to read, find it relaxing. However, when there's a awful, boring, ridiculous book I'm trying to get through I'll do just about anything to avoid picking it up.

I can't help but feel a little defeated when I decide not to finish a book, but I do allow myself to put a book I'm not enjoying down and be done. The weekly reading thread on 2Peas has helped immensely. Recently I had Nine Perfect Strangers on my hold list at the library. When so many Peas said they didn't like it, I deleted it and haven't looked back. This is me, too.

I have enjoyed all of her books but had to force myself to finish this one. It was for my book club and nobody ended up liking it. It kept getting worse and the ending was so weird.

That’s a bummer. I like JP’s books, but I HATE it when authors mess with the time structure. I’m still 40 something on the list for the book at the library. I won’t sweat that anymore!
In college, we were reading Ulysses. I was an English major and loved almost every book I’d ever read. It was the first book I didn’t finish and I have no regrets. I bought the Cliff’s notes and made sure to attend every class. There is VERY punctuation in the entire book. No commas, periods are scarce, chapters aren’t delineated, it’s an egotistic mess.

I am getting too old to waste time on books that don't suck me in from the first few pages. I have no problem putting down a book and not reading/finishing it. I read all library books so it doesn't cost me anything to not finish. I love that I read exclusively on my iPad these days and I just click a button and the book is gone but it is also right there if I want to try it again sometime. There are so many really good books available that I just won't stick with something that bores me. Reading is an escape for me and forcing myself to finish a book that isn't interesting me is a torture that I won't do because I don't have to.

I agree with Heidi. It was a lot of repetition. Didn't care for it.

I also read nearly everything from the library. If I love it, I buy it later.
But I do find books from the thrift store or sometimes from Kindle deals.
And I quit reading much sooner than I used to if I don't like a book. Too many books, so little time.

No, I don't. I just quit reading it if it's not holding my interest. I don't get the feeling that a book must be finished. If it's not good, start another.

YES! There was a biography about Dietrich Bonhoeffer that someone here recommended a while back, I REALLY wanted to read it (I enjoy biographies, even though I mostly prefer lighter fiction books). I slogged through about half of it before I just could NOT take it anymore and quit.

I'm mostly OK with giving myself permission to quit.
My book pet peeve is when people (esp Peas) all rave about a particular book and I just can't get into it. It makes me feel something must be lacking in me.

I give a book one chapter. If it can't suck me in within a chapter, I'm not going to force myself to read it.

I won’t finish a book if I’m not into it by about 60 pages. Just like a boring movie or show, I won’t finish.
My co worker will suffer through until the end...ugh.

It makes me feel something must be lacking in me. Me too ! BUT we shouldn’t feel that way. Some books just don’t do it for me. It just happened to me last night - Moloka’i by Alan Brennert. A lot of Peas loved it; I only made it to 25%. The opposite has happened too. Recently I read The Perfect Child by Lucinda Berry (Feb Kindle First Read). I liked it a lot; some Peas hated it. LESSON - everyone’s different and we can’t all agree on every book. If a book’s not bringing you joy, move on !
