Does your insurance or clinic have a nurse line? If so, I'd call and see what they think. I have degenerative disc disease, and my doctor said to use ice for the first three days after an injury and either heat or ice after that. I hope your son feels better soon.

Ice ice ice! VERY gentle stretching. And consider seeing a chiropractor (maybe ask the coach for recommendations - often there are chiros who work with lots of runners).

If this happened during practice at school find out if the school has insurance to cover it. Our athletes have insurance for injuries during practice.

If it was my child, I would take him to his doctor. If the doctor thinks he needs an orthoped or PT, you can take the referrals and decide when you want to use them. He is your child and is in pain - please take him to get checked out by a physician, at least,

I know at our school, once the trainer tells you to see a physician, you are not allowed to participate in the sport until you have a release from the Dr. In the spring, DS got hit in the mouth in gym class, was cleared to play in his baseball game that afternoon, and advised to see a Dr afterward (that sounds bad, but it's not) for possible stitches. He had to come back with a release in order to play again.
