The We R Memory Keepers Foil Quill is starting to be made available to the public. (This is the winner of the new product showcase at Creativation 2019.) I am loving the idea of being able to foil any shape or font on my computer, of which I have many thousands, but I'm not loving the price point...$99 for the set of three foil pens that fit into your digicutter, four adapters that fit in most popular brands of digicutter, some rolls of foil, and some tape. Ouch! I've been wanting to get into foiling for a while but balked at buying a laminator because who needs yet another big piece of tech taking up valuable scrapping desk space? Not I! I could, of course, wait for the big box stores to get the Foil Quill in and swoop in with a fantastic coupon, but it still seems like a lot of money for something I could in essence do with a $15 Walnut Hollow hot tool. Your thoughts on this product? Buy or skip?

Craft test dummies website just did a review on it. I wonder if big box stores will ban a coupon on it though?

Thanks, I will have to check that out! I've already looked at the Silhouette School review and got all excited, lol.
They seem to ban coupon usage to Cricut and Silhouette, because those are very expensive items (and probably have price agreements in place). They also ban coupons on "everyday value" things because there's not a lot of profit margin built into those. Fingers crossed that the Foil Quill is not on the banned coupon list! HSN just featured the Foil Quill on their all-day craft special for $60, but I just couldn't bite the bullet since I'm still very firmly on the fence as to whether I "need" this tool.

Oh man...they had this on HSN the other day for $60 but it's sold out now. Their regular price is listed as $80. eta...I did order one and it should be here sometime next week. If you want, I can post my thoughts after I get a chance to use it.

Oh my, I just watched the Craft Test Dummies video and you can deboss with this, too, if the pen isn't heated. Ugh, my credit card hand is getting itchy!

When I first saw this I though it was cool, but for $99 (and more for us Canadian crafters), I thought "no damn way"... but now that it is becoming available and I'm seeing it in action, I want one! Chances are I'll pay the price and have one as soon as I can get my hands on it!

Is it the kind of thing they'll have deals on for Black Friday? Or will there be something else by then? Or will it be in Tuesday Morning before the end of the year?
I know BF is a really long ways off and who would want to wait until Thanksgiving, if you don't have it by then doesn't that mean you don't really need it at all? But then again, if you don't think you'll still care about it by November maybe the tool is one of those one-hit-wonder things that is fun to play with a couple of times and then who even remembers they have it? Or it's one of those things you say "I should really use that thing more..."
(I have no particular opinion - just throwing out some questions to consider. For me, knowing how little I use my SNC because I can't leave it set up, it would be something I'd probably only use once or twice a year, so I'm not going to jump into getting it)

I ordered it but canceled it because I don’t have an income right now. I’ll just have to wait.

I'm not positive but I am pretty sure you can use any heat reactive foil with it. Mine should arrive on Monday so I am going to play around with it next weekend at the latest. I have both Heidi Swapp and non-branded foil I am going to test. We shall see.

Minc foil is toner reactive and the Foil Quill is heat reactive. Heidi Swapp posted something on her FB page saying that the foils are a different thickness. I've got a ton of Minc foil too... and a laser printer that is NOT cooperating at the moment!

I bought the foiling quill from HSN. I haven't invested in any foil product before this. This looked like the easiest one and the one that would take up the least space. I saw a preview by some vlogger they sent an early one to. It looked like you will have to experiment with the pressure but that once that is figured out, it should work great. I think the only drawback I see for the quill as opposed to other foil processes is the quill is probably not going to fill in big areas well.

I've decided no. I love the look of foiling. I have a Minc; I have foil; I have pre-designed toner things and sheets of toner. I haven't foiled anything.
I consider this a great big step in "growing up".
ETA - September 26, 2020 Since two people have liked this earlier post, I feel honor bound to report that I held out .... only for a while. (Clearly I'm not much of a "grown up"!) I've owned a Foil Quilt since late 2019. I've only used it once and realized the "learning curve" is greater than I anticipated so I've been waiting for "more time". Of course, not enough space and another move have absorbed some of that time, but I am looking forward now to actually learn to use it! There are many very pretty designs in conjunction with the Silhouette that I'd like to make!

I would love to if the debossing would allow you to score cardstock. The scoring tool on the Cricut Explore doesn't go deep enough and I really don't want to spend the money to get the Maker with its scoring wheel.

My foil quill tools arrived early so I played around with it a little today. I have a cameo and replaced the ratchet blade with the appropriate adapter and the standard quill pen. The quill needs to heat up with a USB port. There's a metal plate to put under the quill which I presume is to protect the cameo. The instructions say to let it heat for 5 minutes. I picked a butterfly image to foil, taped the foil to my cardstock and loaded it into the cameo like normal. I used the sketch option when I sent the design to the cameo. The tape they provide is basically a washi tape. I found it to be a bit strong so I used some ugly washi that I already had. this is what came in the box. In the box by Christine C68, on Flickr this is my butterfly...it came out beatifully. This is with the standard quill. It also had a bold and fine tip quill. We r memory keeper fool quill by Christine C68, on Flickr I tried debossing by using the pen, no foil set to cut heavy coverstock..nothing. I can see the word but there is almost no indentation. If anyone has other suggestions, I'd be happy to try it. Testing debossing by Christine C68, on Flickr I also tried it with HS minc foil and some other non-brand foil and as streetscrapper said, it's different types of foil and it did not work at all. I am curious if there are other brands of heat, not toner, reactive foils that will work with this but it's not huge deal as WRMK has a bunch of colors and hopefully they will become more widely available soon. It really could not have been more simple to use. I mainly bought this for Christmas cards but I can see using it on other projects like to outline a label I plan to cut with the cameo or lettering.

Oh good grief. I've been so back and forth with getting a Minc but alas I'm not willing to spend the money on one since I'd have to also buy ANOTHER printer.
Now there's this. I need to learn more before I plunk down my money.

I ordered the starter kit and one of each pack of 4x6 foil choices. I opted out of ordering the drives as I'd rather buy the direct download if I needed them. Honestly I'm such a hoarder of SVG stuff, I don't think I need them so I went crazy on the foil instead.
Funny thing is that I have an unopened Minc and foil - I only have a laser printer at work and apparently I'm not coordinated enough to print at work for stuff I'd need to use it on ! Hoping this goes better!

First of all, I'm in Canada so this isn't easy to find. We don't have Joanns or Hobby Lobby... just Michael's (and I'm so tired of "Recollections" that I hardly ever go in there these days). I found the the Foil Quill on pre-order at a scrapbooking store that is about an hour away from me. It's $130. No coupons, no deals here... but with our dollar, this is the equivalent to the $99 price in the US. It will ship for free.... I think I'm going to pull the plug and order one... unless someone talks me out of it...

I will be getting one in the future for my sideline business and for my husbands business. The logo they have is gold foil and I do not have a minc machine and I have no desire to buy another bulky thing to store in my room so this is the perfect option for me.

Ok so I bought one and will report back. I’m worried though b/c not all We R products are created equal. Sure, the videos make it look super effortless but IRL you’re ready to throw the offending product across the room. Anyone remember the Stitch Happy machine?

I bought it, I've only had the opportunity to play with it a bit, but I have zero regrets so far.

Any updates on the foil quill? I'm really interested in a project that I would like to have foiling on and if this works it would be wonderful!

I'm curious for updates also... I am on the fence with this product.
I have always wanted a minc, but never bit the bullet because I would also have to buy a laser printer and that just seems like a lot of "stuff." I was thinking this might be a good alternative, but I'm worried about filling in solid areas with it and if it is a true replacement for the minc. Has anyone tried it on specialty papers, like transparencies and vellum? With the heat reactor is that a problem? I would mainly want this for December Daily and would probably wait until closer to then to buy it and hope for a sale.

So, does this foiling give it an embossed/raised texture feel too? Or just shiny?
