A woman and a homeless man who fabricated a heartwarming story of compassion that drew more than $400,000 in donations on GoFundMe pleaded guilty to federal conspiracy charges on Wednesday.
Johnny Bobbitt, 36, pleaded guilty in federal court in Camden, N.J., to one count of conspiracy to commit money laundering, while Katelyn McClure, 28, pleaded guilty to a count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud. Sentencing for Ms. McClure is scheduled for June 19; she faces up to 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. Mr. Bobbitt faces up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. His sentencing date has not been set. The two also face state charges in New Jersey, as does Mark D’Amico, who was Ms. McClure’s boyfriend when the crimes were committed.

And that is why I never give to GoFundMe pleas.
ETA: I don't blame GoFundMe. Also, if I want to give to the cause, I will send a check directly to them. I prefer that the beneficiary gets 100% of the money.

I think this speaks more to the group of them than to GoFundMe. When I give, it's a calculated shot at not having the money got where it should, just like any charitable donation. But here is the life lesson from this: if you plan out a lie, you better do it alone or pick better accomplices.

It sounds like all the parties involved could get some serious jail time (as they should).
I have only donated to a couple of gofundme accounts, and only people I actually know in real life. I want to make sure I'm giving to someone I know needs the money.

i think they need harsh sentences to serve as an example. i hope there isn't a disparity in their sentences because of gender, social status, etc. As a matter of fact, i think she should get a harsher sentence for orchestrating this whole thing and flagrantly whooping it up with the money they collected.

I'm pretty sure Go Fund Me refunded the money to all those who gave.

I won’t even give money to my cousin. Spring is just around the corner, so I expect to see fund me begging popping up soon.

The story I read said the boyfriend wasn’t charged at all. It must have been all the woman’s idea and her doing the spending. The boyfriend stated that he used $500 of the donated money to gamble with, but he paid it back. The woman went through all but $10,000 of the money, minus the $25,000 that she gave to the homeless man. She did buy him a trailer to live in, parked it at their home, but it was in her name and she ended up,selling it. I assume she spent that money too. She faces up to 20 years to think about her scheme. I hope she serves the full 20.
