Dd is turning 9 and my parents want to get her something special (meaning not just a book or a game). They want something memorable. Dd has no ideas.
Dd already has some special necklaces and a watch that she wears every day. We have no shows in town - nothing in town for 5 months - or else they'd buy her tickets to a show / theatre.
Any ideas here?
Thanks, Paige.

Why does a 9th birthday need to be specifically memorable? I'd just pick something she wants.
When my DD was 8 or 9, she wanted Littlest Pet Shop figures. I said no because she never picked up all the little Polly Pocket bits and pieces. So my SIL got her Pet Shop figures for Christmas and DD announced to the room that I wouldn't buy them for her and it was the Best Gift Ever. She still talks about those darn Pet Shop figures!

What about a couple of nights in a pretty setting?

I still have a beautiful jewelry box I was given when I was young. A music box.

She says there is nothing she wants.
Maybe special was the wrong word. Not like a big, expensive present, just something different then the norm. Normally she asks for a game or a book. Last year she asked for a bean bag chair so my parents got that.

That's a good idea. She has asked for a jewlery box in the past. She uses a music box now but the dancer broke years ago.

An Instax camera. So much fun for girls that age.

What about starting a Brighton charm bracelet for her? My parents gave DD one, and they add special charms for special occasions (ie, dog for the dog show, princess carriage for her first musical role (Once Upon a Mattress), etc. They're reasonably priced and DD loves them. Good luck!

My 13 year old niece has always *loved* getting art and craft supplies from me since I'm an artist. I've been adding to her repertoire for years now. I buy her nice supplies like Derwent watercolour pencils (much easier to use than watercolour palettes), good sketch pads and pencils, etc. For Christmas, I bought her some tubes of watercolour paints, tons of brushes, and a few art books.
I loved art supplies when I was a kid. My grandparents got me a pottery wheel--these kits have gotten so much nicer over the years, plus that new air dry clay is awesome!
If scrapbooking and card making supplies had been in vogue when I was a girl, I would have been obsessed with those. I made homemade funny cards anyway, but I would have loved to have some "professional" supplies.
My parents bought me a small sewing machine when I was 9 or 10. I wanted to make doll clothes. Then I started sewing on my mom's old machine, and then my dad bought us a Bernina. I even took sewing classes in college for my interior design degree.
I loved being able to make things and be creative. I also started baking when I was 3--I'd pull the bottom kitchen drawer out and stand on it to reach the counter. I had my own bakery service at 12 for friends and neighbors. My aunt gave me a journal with our family's favorite recipes when I was 13, and I've collected cookbooks ever since.

How about not just a regular reader book for a 9yo but a "keeper" edition of a classic. When I was nine, my mom got me the D'aulaires' Greek Mythology. I read it at the time and loved it, still have it and when one of my nieces developed an interest, I got her her own copy. She's 23 now and still has hers.
Or Jane Austen or Wizard of Oz or Sherlock Holmes or Alice in Wonderland. Something beautiful and timeless.
